In my first playthrough it was Iron Bull, even though he was romanced. Simply because he was a 2H warrior and I was a DW rogue. Don't need more DPS, need tanks! Gimme Blackwall or Cassandra.

Two mages and two tanks that can get full guard with some decent dealing damage weapons wreck stuff. They keep enemies away from mages for the most part and mages set foes on fire or freeze them.

Cass/Blackwall and Dorian/Solas are a great team - I'm a shield warrior so it's between cass and blackwall who I bring.

2H in this game seems to die a lot unless you play it.

For those leaving Cole behind: If it's because he's creepy or you're already a DW rogue, I totally understand. If it's for his potion addiction, though, that's an easy fix: Give him a single dagger that builds guard on hit. There, all better. At least below Nightmare.

Namely Cole, but only because of being a DW rogue. I rotate my other companions pretty well, but it'd probably be Vivienne outside of the time when first getting her.

Sera, for running as close to dragons or other major beasts as possible. Lady, if you are an archer why are you running towards it? Poor survival instinct, perhaps?

I think it may just be poor tactics AI for ranged classes. I have had non KE mages purposefully run up to the tanks targets just to Mind Blast them.

The AI is fine...as long as you don't have any attacks on her action bat that are close range.  Have Shadow Strike maybe?  I did, until I realized what i was doing, and pulled it from her active ability loadouts.  Might want to check if you have anything similar.

varric had to stop using Toxic Cloud for the same reason.

Sera. No competition even. I just do not like this character. For my first playthrough I only took her out for her personal quest and after -that- huge slice of stupid I could barely be arsed to talk to her in Skyhold. I only did so because she was on the way to Cole's corner. I am going to try my best to give her a second chance this playthrough, I even have her in the party right now. She has until Cole's appearance to change my mind, but I don't see it happening since she's already tryin' her best to get under my skin with the "too elfy" stuff in regards to my elf.

I'm surprised to see so many people think Cole is so hard to keep alive. I kept the best crafted stuff I could manage on my A-team. With shields and an upgraded aoe regen potion on him or the warrior during long fights, he rarely hit the ground or needed emergency potion, even against dragons and whatnot. I did not use guard daggers either, though that sounds like a great idea for this playthrough.

Serra - because I can NEVER bring myself to not take Varric with me.

Cole - I don't like him. The last spirit that came from the Veil fused with a mage and blew up the Chantry.

Solas - After I got Viviene and Dorian in the patry I forgot that I ever had a bald elf following me about all this time.

Blackwall, he is what? Exactly the same sort of tank as Cassandra? I tried to spec him up for 2-handed tanking and he sucks so freaking hard. Plus he is the most boring character plus the biggest wanker.

He is defender kind of tank while Cassandra is a templar essentially. If we talk about pure CC and such Blackwall seems actually superior to Cassandra, that Ghost Wall thingy is quite powerfull (and annoying if you want to rush through it ;)) and makes sure no minions run towards your casters if used right. Templar is mostly flashy in comparison to that.

Wow.  Many people not liking Cole.

For me, it was the opposite.  I went into the game thinking I wouldn't like Cole at all, and he ended up becoming one of my most favorite companions of all time.

Everyone besides Vivienne, Sera, Dorian and Cassandra. And now I'm doing a female rogue playthrough and Vivienne, Sera and Cassandra will always be in my posse and we shall call ourselves ***** Power.

For me it was Sera and Vivienne. Reasons as follows.

Sera: While I find her amusing, I dislike her attitude. Everything is Black and White to her.....there can be no inbetween.

Vivienne: I do like her.....she's intelligent, classy and well spoken. However, she's also a hypocrite. She's believes Mages belong in the Circles, yet she herself doesn't live in one. She's enjoyed a life of freedom and luxury that most people -especially Mages- can only dream of.

As a result, I don't think I ever took either of them out more than once each.

Sera and Vivienne. I hated both, Vivienne for her limit views and being eager to slave all the mages to the Chantry just so she can get more political power, Sera for a lot of reasons that I have posted in a lot of threads.

Dorian, Solas and Cole were the most interesting characters for me and since I became Knight Enchanter I dropped my tank because my character could tank himself so I could bring those 3 everywhere. And for the party banters I have with them, I think that if you are interested in DA´s universe magic and face, those 3 are the best companions to bring with you.

Class-wise my most unused characters were Iron Bull, Varric, and Dorian. Overall my most unused party member was Varric.

Don't get me wrong, I like all the characters but these are just the three that fell in battle out of the rest.

However, I purposely didn't bring along Varric much because I felt like I knew his character from DA2 and I wanted to meet new personalities.

Cole - I do like him and his interactions with others (especially Cassandra. So heartwarming), but he's a potion addict, and micro-managing a DW rogue is a pain. It also feels very wrong to spec him as an archer (i feel this way about re-speccing companions in general). Even if I do want another melee character, I would take Iron Bull rather than him.

Blackwall - He's a good tank, and nothing more. Cassandra is a good tank, can buff up the party, heal the party with Rally, and do devious things to enemies with barrier. Personality wise, I also much prefer Cass to him. And Cassandra is my character's LI, so her spot is pretty much permanent.

Honorable mention: Varric - Sadly, Artificer and Archery on an AI-controlled party member don't mix. Bianca is very underwhelming compared to Sera's crafted bow and Tempest. I did start to use him more for the banter once I specced to Knight Enchanter, as damage output is no longer a concern.

The mages get rotated frequently, though I have a preference for Dorian. The spot also goes to Iron Bull occasionally.

Cole and Blackwall.

Cole because Dagger Assassins controlled by the A.I die a lot.

Blackwall because I already use Cass as the main tank and Iron Bull for Dragon Hunting.

Ah, thanks for talking about his abilities. Cassandra's Templar abilities are good too though, and I love Cassandra with Grappling Hook. She looks so awesome yanking a monster over towards her XD.

Cole - largely because he was redundant with my character being a dual-wielding rogue and brought nothing my party needed to the table in combat.

I typically liked to run a 2 warrior/1 rogue/1 mage party or a 1 warrior/1 dual-wield rogue/1 archer rogue/1 mage party.  So Cole simply had no spot in either party formation.

I also didn't like his big floppy hat.  Seriously, that thing looked ridiculous.  Who came up with that design and thought it looked cool?

Vievienne because I was an knight enchanter mage myself. and I really didnt like her that much. She is quite predictable, I knew how she would react when I talked with her the first time. Thus she was boring.
