Should I skip DA II and go straight into Inquisition?

Back in August I began playing DAO and got pretty far into the game before having to set it aside. My plan at the time was to play through DAO and DA II before playing Inquisition. Recently, I finally picked DAO back up and am almost done with it.

Now that Inquisition is out, and I'm almost finished with DAO. I have to wonder if I should just skip DA II, or should I stick to my original plan? Would skipping DA II negatively affect an Inquisition playthrough? I've read that the games are kind of standalone in that you can skip one and still know what's going on. Although, I've also read that the games are somewhat interconnected, which makes me think it might be a bad idea to fast forward.

You'll appreciate inquisition more if you play through DA2. Specifically, play through the Legacy DLC if you want to get the most out of Inquisition.

I would not skip DA2. The protagonist in DA2 plays someone of a major role in DAI and playing DA2 would allow you to have better insight into this protagonist. Also, the core events in DA2, especially the DLC, plays a MAJOR role in the world state of DAI, moreso than DAO which has very little affect/mentions in DAI.

So yeah, I would play DA2 before DAI.

The plot of that game is on the Wiki plus you can log in to Dragon Age Keep and watch a synopsis of the canon events of DA II narrated by Varric (who appears in both that game and this current game as a char). You can play around with the plot decisions in the Keep. When you do play Inquisition a lot of the plot of DA II is rehashed for you in the comments by main characters. Your call. DA II is cheap and you can play it if you want but if you skip it read the descriptions on Dragon Age Wiki and check out the Keep to get yourself ready for Inquisition.

Or you could play DA2 after DAI.  Wouldn't hurt anything.

If you have the time, definitely play DA2 before DAI. I love to immerse in these kind of games and playing all the previous ones its a must for me, but its not necessarily a "game breaker" if you don't.

But I would definitely recommend you to play it, even if you have to rush the main story, its always better that not playing it at all.

Just my 2 cents!

I kind of regret not playing any of the DA2 DLC.  The big reveal I was like meh..when if I had played them I probably would of been like OH!

It's worth a playthrough. Its not as bad as people like to make out, and it has some pretty important background stuff for Inquisition (in the Legacy DLC ). Plus you can get it dirt cheap now.

I would not suggest skipping DA2. I think DAI will have a much larger impact if you have experienced the events in DA2. I'd also suggest that you not skip playing the Legacy DLC for DA2, as well. The other DLC are skippable.

I would play through DA 2, they reference it quite a bit in DA:I plus certain plot points will loose impact without context.

I recomend playing DA II and DLC's first, even if you just cheat your way through to finish faster.

But you don't have to. Inquisition explains what happened to newcomers but you wouldn't appreciate as much.

You will not feel the sort of attachment to certain things that occur in DAI if you skip DA2 I think. This may not actually be a terrible thing, considering.

Have you looked over what DA2 has to offer as far as romances and... well I guess that's it? Not much of what you do in that game makes a huge difference. So, unless something you've seen of it for yourself absolutely makes you want to play it, and you don't already own it, I'd say its pretty safe to skip it. I see no reason to buy that game just to play this one.

If you do already own it, you should play it first. Probably.

But it isn't necessary by any stretch.

I didn't enjoy DA2 much, but I did like my Hawke. DA:I will be more meaningful if you know who he/she is and why they made the decisions you will make. It also directly sets up the situation we're dealing with here. Play it and be sure to get the DLC. It's actually better and more fun than the game. I'd say play twice, once as a mage and once as a warrior if you can manage it.

Thanks for the replies.

Based on what everyone has said I think I'll stick with my original plan, but add the Legacy DLC.  I hadn't planned on doing any of the DLC for either game.

I haven't read a lot about either DA II or Inquisition, as I'm really trying to avoid spoiling anything for myself.

I'd also add the mark of the assassin and exiled prince dlc. Having the character from exiled prince makes some decisions more complicated, which is interesting and I suspect we haven't seen the last of him. Mark of the Assassin has the least serious quest line which is a blessed relief. ;) I really enjoyed it. You can prob get it all in one package pretty cheap now.

I'd recommend playing Dragon Age II just to play as Sarcastic Hawke.

Doesn't Mark of the Assassin still have the save corrupting bug? Or did they patch that?

Skip MotA. It is beautiful and has the best boss fight of all of DA2 but you have no way to change anything and it has no impact on DAI at all.

This is probably the worst place to ask about DA2. Anywhere else you would have a chorus of people talking about what a horrible disappointment it was and not to bother.

Watch it on youtube and spare yourself a tedious slog with little payoff.

A lot of things will be resumed for you by Varric or just go watch some youtubes videos that would be quicker than playing DA 2.

Because, your choics won't be even imported into the Keep so why bother playing it unless you're bored or you want to immerge yourself into the story. I don't see the point.

But I do advise you to read a bit the wiki or watch some youtubes videos.

Honestly i want to say yes to skip it but now looking on DAI, DA2 is following dragon age spirit.

So yes even though the game isnt the best in the franchise, play it.

Going directly from DAO to DAI is in immense culture shock. Both games are set in the same universe and share the same lore but under they hood the are drastically different. Some abilities and spells have the same names as in DAO but they are all totally different. Tactical combat isn't impossible but nowhere near as precise and compelling as in DAO. Some enemies look the same as in DAO and even have similar animations but in DAI they are just passive punching bags with kilotons of hitpoints and no teeth (with the sole exceptions of revenants who still got some bite, at least the bossy ones that are higher in level and have ten times as many hitpoints as DAO's archdemon). It isn't rare to find courtesy critters (ambient fauna) with ten times Archie's hitpoints, and the weakest dragon has about ten times as many HP as the Harvester (toughest I've seen had 25 times Harvester or 75 times Archie). It plays pretty much like Dungeon Siege, with nicer graphics, nicer animations and nicer banter, but sans beasts of burden and with very small inventory capacity.

Playing DA2 first you'll get the inevitable adaptation shock out of the way, and DAI might even be an improvement after that.

This; don't trust the BSN, ever.
