I kind of regret not playing any of the DA2 DLC.  The big reveal I was like meh..when if I had played them I probably would of been like OH!

I played the DLC and kind of wished I hadn't.  The big reveal felt a lot more like a retread.

To the OP in my opinion the game benefits from having played the others in particular DA2 because the universe is a little richer if you have background knowledge however the game does provide Codex entries and people will discuss events and history enough that you can figure out what's going on if you haven't played the others.

This is probably the worst place to ask about DA2. Anywhere else you would have a chorus of people talking about what a horrible disappointment it was and not to bother.

Watch it on youtube and spare yourself a tedious slog with little payoff.

+1

Also, Bioware was dead determinant on making little of your choices from DA2 even matter in Inquisition.

Also, the events of DA2 are pretty much explained in Inquisition anyway.

I'd say if you want to play DA2, definitely play it before DAI, both because of all the storyline aspects that carry over which are definitely important, but also just because DAI is so much better than DA2, it'll be tougher to go back and play it once you've played DAI, so I'd say play DA2 first.

I'd play it. Sure, Hawke isn't the big ego power trip for the player like the Warden was, but it is a good story and there's Varric and Cassandra and Hawke. And the DLCs are better than the game, so it's worth playing first. Play Mark of the Assassin before you deal with the Qunari, and play Hawke Family Legends right after you deal with the Qunari. That's my suggested order.

I only got to Act...2 or 3 in DA2 and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of DAI. There are returning characters but...eh...I didn't play Mass Effect One and still completely enjoyed 2 and 3 so...Just look up videos of the story on DA2 if you really want to know but don't want to play through.

it's a must!

really DA2 was probably the second worst "game" ever (it's not even a game, is just a demo made game, that should be given for free or actually PAY someone to play that crap).

I finished that crap one time and wished i could destroy everycopy of it in the world... HECK I EVEN MADE AN ALTAR TO SHAQ FU THAT SAYS; "AT LEAST, BETTER GAME THAT DA2"

If you can find it at a low price (let's say under 20 bucks...) I would say yes, play DA II . I played it without the dlc, and I'm fine with it.

It's worth playing if you can get over the reused environments and other flaws. I thought the legacy DLC was great and the characters and party banter were really good plus you'll know who Cassandra, Varric, Hawke, The main villain, and some Other mentioned characters are. It's not necessary however, just like you can play the games without reading the books and figure out what happened in the past through context.

DA2 fails as a game, but its story works well. If you can stand the combat, by all means play it, else I recommend to still play it, but set it to Casual and install a story mode mod. That way you can enjoy the story - which is quite probably the most well-crafted of all DA games's stories, except for the ending - without the combat getting in the way and minimizing the time you spend in "the cave".

So, personally, I have several playthroughs of Origins, and a grand total of 1 playthrough of DA:II. Origins was a better game than DA:II by leaps and bounds, and Generally, I would not really recommend DA:II as a game on its own, but I honestly feel that you really need to play DA:II to get the most out of inquisition. The entirety of DA:II, especially the end of the first act, and the entire third act, give so much context to inquisition that it's really difficult for me to recommend skipping out on it. I won't say more than that for spoiler's sake, but there are a few scenes at the end of DA:II that basically completely set up the plot for Inquisition. Of course everything is explained in DA:I, but it's really just not the same.

My suggestion: Play the game on Casual/Easy, and basically only do story missions. The main story and conflicts of DA:II were actually pretty compelling in my opinion, it's just that the world that they take place in is infinitely less so. DA:II is really not a long game either, you could probably bang through it in a little over a weekend if you basically just went straight through the story (although i'd suggest getting all of the companions and doing their sidequests as well).

DA2 was worth a playthrough but in addition to stand alone problems like environment reuse and a weak main plot, it also suffers from following a game that was easily worth several playthroughs. I'd recommend you play it once if you can grab it cheap. Legacy and Mark of the Assassin DLCs were fantastic.

You can skip it just fine, DA2 is just a spark that caused the current ruckus in southern Thedas. But you can go to youtube and watch the best story bits of DA2 there, just to get to know Varric if nothing else.

DA2 was my first Dragon Age game and I really enjoyed my time with it. Of course when I played DA:O not long after I enjoyed that 10x more, but I still hold the opinion that DA2 is not that bad of a game. Either way, DA2 is pretty cheap these days so you could pick it up just to try it and if you don't like it oh well. Dragon Age inquisition is the better game without a doubt, but playing a Sarcastic Mage Hawke through his adventures in Kirkwall will always be one of my favorite experiences in gaming so far.

@OP

I would suggest to skip whole DA in general. Just wait for next Mass Effect...

It's a pretty good story in DA2.  I have played through it 4 times and enjoyed myself much more than I am with Inquisition, so yes.

DA2 is extremely underrated. IMO, if it weren't published under EA people would have been much more receptive towards it for what it was. I've played Origins six times and DA2 six times. Honestly, it sort of pisses me off that people go around claiming it's the worst game ever when that is so not even the case.

@OP I recommend playing it. It's a pretty good game in its own right as long as you don't expect it to be DAO.

DA2 is much better than Inquisition, even with the level recycling and lackluster encounter design, so i'd recommend playing it before starting up DA:I.

Back in August I began playing DAO and got pretty far into the game before having to set it aside. My plan at the time was to play through DAO and DA II before playing Inquisition. Recently, I finally picked DAO back up and am almost done with it.

Now that Inquisition is out, and I'm almost finished with DAO. I have to wonder if I should just skip DA II, or should I stick to my original plan? Would skipping DA II negatively affect an Inquisition playthrough? I've read that the games are kind of standalone in that you can skip one and still know what's going on. Although, I've also read that the games are somewhat interconnected, which makes me think it might be a bad idea to fast forward.

I would play DA2 if I were you. If you are playing it on the PC go to the nexus and you'll find some mods to make the experience better if you wish. But overall it's nice to get the story and interact with the characters etc. There are some pretty horrible things about the game, as I'm sure you've heard, but still worth at least one playthrough.

I liked da2, if it had been released as an expansion for 30 bucks it'd have been brilliant.

Buuuut to release it as DA2...lol.

Still like I said it's quite fun to run through.

The only thing that really matters in 2 is Legacy. But the combat is horrible (endless waves literally fall from the sky), the story is generic and shallow, reused environments to the point that not only will you enter the same cave over and over, but you'll enter the same cave with different areas blocked named something else. Everything about DA2 is rushed. It's a horrible entry to the series and should really never be played now considering you can't import your save to Inquisition.

But if you really want to I wish you luck, I just finished a playthrough (no idea why).

I found DA 2 very enjoyable - combat was pretty meh, but the story and characters were great - So I'll advice against skipping it. ;) I also don't get the hate it got, but I can relate if people expected DA:O 2, which it isn't. It's very different. It is it's own game, though in the same world, but as I said (maybe because I just expected good story telling from Bioware games) if you can handle the sometimes ludicrous combat, it's very worth it, as the story works great imo.

On a related note: DA:I Managed to dissappoint me with it's firsthand impression, aka, when you get to Hinterlands. The MMO like nature of most, if not all of, the sidequests really rubbed me the wrong way, and I got really discouraged from playing it. I wanted to like it, but it felt like a "singleplayer MMORPG", with quest quality at SW:TOR level or worse. However, the main and inner circle quest lines (haven't completed the game yet, by a long shot though) are great, and seems like usual Bioware quality. ;) Also, the landscapes are very well made! Even if a bit large. :P

If you want to play DA2 (which it sounds like, from your plan), then definitely play it before DA:I. DA:I is standalone but has a lot of references, some of them fairly important. So, while it's not necessary, you will get more enjoyment out of the game when you recognise things. And you'll also probably be more invested in some things DA2 focuses on that turn up in DA:I.

Personally, I also liked DA2 a lot. Basically, this:

^agreed.

DA2 has its bad sides. But how good/bad you'll find it depends on what you consider important. Lots of things I care for (protag/companions interaction, protagonist having a voice, a more personal story, things like that) were things DA2 definitely improved over DA:O. If you care more about exploration (re-used environments...) or if you want an epic hero-saves-the-world story (definitely not), you'll find DA2 lacking.

But if you don't want to play DA2 at all, then don't and skip to DA:I.

DA2 has it's faults, but I would honestly recommend the game.  With Legacy tying so closely into the story, I think it's worth the play through.  If you want a nice pre-boss warm up, bring along Anders.  The gameplay isn't very good (I did enjoy the combat, though I think I'm a minority), but I thought it had a great story.  This will also allow you to get to know Varric in his own hometown, if you're a fan of his.  Even if you're not, the events of Kirkwall was the catalyst for Asunder and DAI in particular.

Generally I do Legacy during Act 2, and then MotA in Act 3.
