He's a swell fellow, the life of the party.

The more I think about him... the more I consider him DA:I's Anders... and the more I hate him.

From the start I was worried he'd pull an Anders on everyone and turn out to be the one who caused the breach in the first place.... yeah, I was not happy I was right.

BUT he's not exactly like Anders. At least he realized his mistake and corrected it. At the loss of many lives, true...

I was close to hating Solas for many hours (despite being in a romance with him), but the ending changed my opinion of him. Now I feel really bad for him. He's a truly tragic character who just wanted to save his people and it all went horribly wrong... twice...

They both have anger issues though. Anders was a LOT more angry though, having been possessed and everything. Solas might end up a crazy villain too. I hope not.

Yeah, Solas has a bit of a bitter Anders aftertaste. But I like him again after the ending. Now that we know he's a key player, I find him incredibly intriguing. Much more than at first when he was pretty interesting already though.

My experience with the Solas romance went from cute dreamer to WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?! to YOU JERK to awwww no, poor misunderstood Dread Wolf. Lavellan broke his heart too. She's the one who pushed herself on him and got both their feelings hurt.

I know I'm likely in the minority here, but - I rolled a female elf just for him and was underwhelmed by the romance portions. The few scenes that were available were fantastic, breathtaking even! But there were huge chunks of time in between filled with a whole bunch of NOTHING. For instance there was nothing at all between the kiss on the balcony and the "dumping" scene - unless I missed something??

Anyway I do love Solas. What an interesting character.

This is true of every single romance in DAI. I'm glad they allowed conversations to be slightly more open in DAI than previous games, and definitely better than DA: II where you were totally blocked off from your companions except during cutscenes... but the romances were underwhelming for me. In playthroughs now I only engage romances towards the very end because once you have the big sex scene there's pretty much nothing left to do with those characters.

I thought Cullen's romance, by comparison, had much more content and was fairly well spaced out too. The fact that you could kiss him again and again helped to fill in the gaps - with Solas, there was nothing but a greeting of "my heart" when speaking to him.

I haven't tried the other romances yet, but I do hear they vary in terms of content.

After the ending I really like him, but sadly he's rather quiet in my party most of the times. I've realized that his character is probably best utilized in certain situations like going to elven ruins or the fade. Dorian is my absolute favorite and always first pick as much as I now like solas, so I will run with two mages if I don't need a rogue for locks (that's really all I use them for as they die very fast and don't do enough damage to warrant their use for me personally unless it's small foes in which case Cole is pretty good with daggers but nearly dies half the time - mages are actually less squishy due to keeping them ranged). But I do really like Solas. He's just not very interesting a lot of the time. I've had him with varric, cass, cole (with cole doing crestwood was great!) and blackwall. So far, dialogue/banter has been pretty much not worth having him except for crestwood. But I roll with two mages lately and two champion shield warriors (myself as one of them) just to see what he brings to the party. So far, it's very situational.

Most of Solas' best banter is with Cole, even outside Crestwood. :)

Ok true my statement of all romances was presumptuous as I've only done cassandra's, jose's, iron bulls, and seras. they were probably the best of the series imo, but even so, my original point was I was going into this game expecting... idk.. more? I don't wanna just say more sex.. but there it is. More sex.

Feels like with all of them once you reach the big-Oh, there's not really a whole lot left to talk about.. Everyone's just sorta like, "hey whatsup?" For future games, I would really like to see them hit home with this. They did good, but they need to double their cutscenes and allow for more dates, more sex, more leisurely time, etc. Cassandra's fetch quest for candles and poetry was actually pretty fun, for example. You know, more gift-stuff.

I suppose you're limited in a video game, but with a game that's based on getting to know your characters it seems like there should be almost a "main quest" tree in itself of things to do with each character. Or at least I think there should be.

I am curious as to how peoples opinions are coloured by something that not everyone gets. I have read in threads about Solas, Flemeth and various elven deities towards the end of the game. Problem is that I've not got these cut scenes and the plot that goes with them, so all I have to go with is his somewhat unique views on spirits. I found him interesting, but found him very abrasive with both Sera and Iron Bull, refusing to even try and understand their view points.

There's also the dance at the winter palace and a couple of flirts here and there. Not as much content as Cullen (because he had a larger word budget, not being a companion and all) but comparable to Blackwall. So going from Cullen to Solas, yeah, you're going to notice that he has less content. But that's also the structure of the game. There's so much stuff to do that the character content feels thinner.

There's also something to be said for being able to take him with you. I loved having Solas fight at my side throughout the game. It gave In Hushed Whispers so much impact, and I was reassured to have him with me when the Inquisitor was tossed into the Fade in Here Lies the Abyss. Just seeing him react to the world made up for the less Skyhold content.

I really enjoy Solas as a character but Maker that man can be an annoying ass. First playthrough I had him in a party with Varric and Iron Bull, and he wouldn't stop bugging Varric about how the Dwarves should be trying to revitalize their people (despite the fact that Varric agrees with him), and keeps fighting with Iron Bull over the Qun (despite everything IB does to try to defuse and agree to disagree). Now I'm playing a Dalish rogue and have him in a party with Sera, and he keeps condescending to her for not being elfy enough, and condescends to me for not be the right kind of elfy.

At least he gets along with Blackwall, what with both of them being conspicuously ambiguous about their pasts.

Did you save the Chargers and have Solas and Bull in a party together afterwards? That results in some of the most heartwarming banter in the game, imo.

And I dunno, I think his passionate, opinionated side is mitigated by some of the sillier banters that he gets. Like when he's trolling Sera by offering to teach her magic as revenge for her putting lizards in his bed. And talking to Varric about Hard in Hightown. And getting embarrassed when Vivienne teases him about having set the hem of his coat on fire. For all his condescension, he cares about the companions. You can see that best with Bull, Cole, and Cass.

I didn't think much of him in my first playthrough. I didn't romance him and my character disagreed with his ideas about spirits. There didn't seem like very much shown in the game that supported Solas' arguments, so there was no compelling reason to change my mind.

And honestly, I felt like my playthrough romancing him felt like as close to a rivalmance as the game will support. He insults your Dalish culture, insists that he is smarter than all of you, goes on about how much more enlightened he his, and then finally tells you that he fell in love with you because for some reason you are better than everyone else in the world, apparently across the span of all the Ages, not because maybe he was mistaken that the real world does have something to offer that the Fade doesn't.... lol. I kind of love it, and I don't know why.

Yeahhh I completely agree with this, particularly given the many many hours of the game.

I wasn't sure what to make of him on my first run through, but have grown to like him.

He strikes me as very polarising. My friend can't stand him, for instance. He calls him Solas-to-mouth.

Oh yeah, I loved the chess game (though I wonder what their banter is like if you don't save the Chargers). Like I said, I really like Solas, but it's striking, especially on a second playthrough, just how judgmental he can be. One has to wonder at the massive blind spot that allows him to carry on in such a fashion given what he himself has done.

He is upset with bull can't remember the conversation but its not exactly happy or heart warming like how bull was worrying if he will turn savage or the chess game.

Well not upset he was more disappointed more than anything else.

Maybe it isn't so much a blind spot as not wanting people to repeat his mistakes. And since he can't give too many actual examples from his life without blowing his cover, it tends to boil down to "because I said so!"

I don't necessarily think it's a blind spot. He named himself "pride" after all. He knows that this is his failing, and he tries to correct it. You can see it in some of his dialogues with Sera and especially with Cole. But he's also frustrated by what he perceives as harmful ignorance. He doesn't have many friends, and during his personal quest he sees one of the only friends he has left tortured and killed because of ignorance. I think he's a very conflicted character, and very flawed, but he's also quite self-aware. I don't think he's perfect, not by a long shot. But he gets points for trying very hard to correct himself. As judgmental as he is, you often hear him apologizing afterwards. Like when he rips into Blackwall upon finding out his secret, only to give him a heartfelt apology later. Or when he expresses frustration over Sera's apparent lack of ambition, only to catch himself when she questions whether changing things would do any good, and then thanks her and tells her that she's fine the way she is.

I have a love-hate attitude toward Solas. I love his romantic, somewhat gentle nature, his trying to correct his mistakes. I hate his pride, his unwilling to share his burden even with the one he loves, his terrible mistakes, his willing to do everything to achieve his goal. Above all, I'm saddened by his loneliness.
