Well-written, great character when you look at it from a non-rp point of view.

When you are looking through the eyes of your Inquisitor however, all you can think of is how badly you want to hunt that bastard down and take back your armor. Hang how well-written he was. Plus he gave Corypheus the orb. If we get a DLC with Solas I'd better get my equipment back -_-

I really don't like Solas, but in a well written character kinda way. A character that you love to hate way. As opposed to Kai Leng from the ME series. I did not like Leng because he was a weak cardboard character. Whereas Solas, I think, is a good strong character---but he;s kind of a d!ck. Just really smug and condescending. I don't like that.

However, most of the companions are pretty smug and condescending. Overkill with that a bit. I have a Lady Lavellan that's trying to romance him; and a Lady Adaar that wants to peel the flesh off of his skull.

So, good character.

(My fave companions though are Cassandra and Cole---which is a friggin Huge surprise to me. Esp Cole. I wasn't sure I even wanted to recruit him what with his history.  And Bull. I think Bull comes in 3rd.)

I've had Solas liking my Quizzy only on one playthrough and that was out of pure accident too. Some say it is easier to make him your friend when playing as a Lavellan, but for me it's more like:
inquisitor: *makes a decision*
> solas greatly disapproves
inquisitor: *opens mouth*
> solas disapproves
inquisitor: *breathes*
> solas slightly disapproves

I get slight approvals every now and then, but it's not enough to unlock his personal quest or any other dialogue option than "Tell me about Corypheus.". But I definetly want to see what the hype around his character is, so I'm probably going to roll another Lavellan, a mage, and just try to make things get Solas' seal of approval. Mission impossible..?

Just ask him questions whenever possible, don't say anything that can be taken as too prideful unless the other options are support Dalish. Support interest in his views of the fade, elves, free mages and grey outlooks on the world.  Admit ignorance in situations where it seems right.  Don't make decisions in ignorance and play the better safe than sorry card unless it conflicts with free mages, elves and the fade.  Never support the dalish in 90% of convos unless he himself seems positive about them.  You should be good. :)

I read nothing about the game, as I hate getting spoiled before I actually get a chance to play, so I went into the game completely blind(I played 1 and 2, so I knew what I was going to play).

And the second I saw him, I said to myself "Okay, so, when is he going to bite me in the ass?"... From past experiences with Dragon Age, I can say that the first mage you meet is always going to bite you in the ass at some point.

So I was all like "Told you so" when he turned out to be the one who causes everything to go to hell =P

But I do like him, he is a little annoying at times, but who isn't?

He's the most interesting character in the game. And I believe that he did what had too with the elven gods going crazy with power.

He called my left leaning moderate Andrastian a friend. She thought he was weird at first but her distrust didn't carry. While they didn't always agree, they respected each other. She was sad and concerned when he left. She wasn't keen on ancient Elven magic (she saw Flemeth and was basically like Maker's breath a demon) but she saw what she thought was her friend and comrade sad at the loss of Elven heritage, and she felt for him.. She'd be in for quite a shock.

I'm...conflicted. Intrigued. Plan to romance him on my second playthrough with a mage. Kind of regret spoiling the romance, but I don't expect that to nullify the feels I'll feel. And I like me some feels. I feel like I'll grow to love Solas in an oh maker what are you doing kind of way.

I don't know what to think of Solas.  I like his intrigue and the shard sitting on his desk reminds me of all the mystery and lore and deep, dark, underground stuff I like to trudge through.  But I can't advance any of his character sidequests, so he's just an antisocial bald-headed ......five letter word to me right now. :(

My 1st inquisitor is a Lavellan and if I consider what she'd think about him, I'd say that she loved him and is greatly saddened by him suddenly leaving like that, and if Solas one day explains his reasoning as to why he did what he did, she'd welcome him back with open arms.

My current Inquisitor is a hardcore Andrastian Trevelyan and while she's compassionate, I'd like to think she'd be pissed off about how he basically lied to her the entire time, using the Inquisition basically as a way to correct his own mistake, etc etc. Especially considering that he's told her he considered her as a true friend.

My last playthrough I romanced him and he tells me that my markings are slave markings and says he can take them off and afterwards he dumps me. I quickly reloaded the game and told him that I wanted to keep my slave markings because I go through the whole game with them and they look pretty badass.

It is amazing that I get back to Skyhold and he doesn't even bring up the reason why he dumped me. Just calls me Inquisitor.

Actually there is a new sub dialogue tree after that scene labeled "What about us?" where you ask him to explain what happened before.  It's in the lower right corner of the dialogue wheel.

He still doesn't give you the reason why he dumped you though, but instead tries to smooth out what he said earlier and you can react however you feel.

If you really want to know the reason there's a Weekes interview about that.  You can find a summary/snipet it on dragon age wiki Solas page.  It's actually very interesting from a main plot and romance plot perspective. :)

I like him too. Of course, after finding out all the details of who he is and what he did (started) - my IQ wants to stab him in the face.

But i still like him.

I like him so much I'm carrying around a set of extra robes and a staff he could take with him when he leaves. And some apple pies. I'm that thoughtful.

He seemed like someone you forget about because doesn't have the flair of the rest of the pack.  I switched him out for Viv first chance I got.  However, the more I play the game I realize he has a lot of the best moments in DA:I.  He's a well written character for sure.  I can't wait to see what the Keyser Soze of Thedas cooks up for the next games.

Beforr the ending, I thought he was the epitome of wasted knowledge. Essentially a brilliant man who does little to affect or improve the lives of those he could actually help

From the mages to elves to warden, Solas would complain but offer no better solution on the pretense that its not within his power but he wag his finger and throw judgemental looks at you like nobodies business

After the ending....he stole my GILF :(

Ahah, if I could tell something to my DA characters before their adventures being, it would be: "Stay the hell away from NPC mages. They'll break your heart".

Anyway, from a non RP perspective, I think Solas is a very well written character. He has some great lines of dialogue  and his banter is amazing: both funny and deep. Plus, the voice actor did a great job delivering his lines.

Besides from appreciating the way he was written, I am torn between loving him and wanting to punch him.

He was good friend with my warrior lady Cadash in my first playthrough, but now I am playing an archer Lavellan and romancing him. It's good and heartbreaking.

But yeah, I do want to punch him from time to time, too.

Let's put it this way, the ending made him seem a little interesting. The rest of the game he is dull, a know it all who doesn't help, think demons are a-okay (they aren't they are demons) and seemingly went against nearly all my decisions because of opinionated reasons. I didn't get to do any of his quests in my first playthrough as he didn't like me and he was the only one. After the end, add liar and dishonest to the list.

Now, Bioware are going to make some big thing of him and out of the main cast he was the least interesting (after Cole).

There's a line the inquisitor says to Cole when she first meets him that sums up my interactions with Solas pretty well for me.

paraphrased:

"He explained it to me, but to be perfectly honest I stopped listening halfway through."

Ah yes Solas... It's almost sad how deep I'm with this ship. Too deep, no way out now...

Egg head got me in my very first playthrough (I went in spoler free), in which I pretty much romanced him as a joke 'cause let's face it, he's not the the prettiest looking character in the game and doen't open up that easily, if at all.

There's just something about the way he's writen that's intriguing as hell. He's a liar, manipulative and well, proud as a wolf he is but same time kind and wise. It's interesting mix which I can't get enough of. And his sense of humor, dear lord who knew nerd like him would have such a sass in him. His banter with Vivienne and Dorian is comedy gold~

If I only knew what I got myself into. Now it's too late :'I //happily sunks with this ship//
