There is reason why it's in law to rate games and media so that children won't see it. It won't do good for children to see stuff that aren't meant to them was it pornography, violence or other mature themes. No matter how you disagree and think children shouldn't be sheltered law is against it because of reason that has been determined by child psychologists.

Also it should be remembered that all kids aren't similar. If I think myself I know I wouldn't be able to handle DAI as 13 years old, maybe even 15 years old. Maybe you were, idk. Maybe you think you were but you weren't. I have seen many pretty effed up kids who grow on playing GTA's and think it's okay to treat women as prostitutes and be violent cause they can be that in a game.

Another sidenote: my aunt and uncle basically forced me to watch the news for 1/2-1.5 hours a night after school, during/after dinner. I came to hate it. Yet it also really inspired me to look beyond the daily regular bits of information and instead do my own research of history, sides of argumentation, little-reported stories, sociology/psychology, and more.

I'd see a crowd of raging Arabs on the news and my moderately conservative boomer parentals tsk tsk them as if they're all a bunch of lunatics, and instead of going along with it, I looked more into the facts and the culture*. So uh, I guess I'm just saying that kids watching the news as early as say, the pre-teens, may not be so bad as long as they are given some sort of guidance :)

But earlier than that, yeah, they should be sheltered. The years of 1-10ish need to be reserved for childhood and nothing more than childhood.

*for that matter, this acceptance of other cultures to a reasonable degree possibly kept me from being so racist that I'd ignore the (Lebanese) person who has been my partner for 3.5 years now, but that's another thing

None can cut off the kids and put them in a bubble, it is not even good imho, to entirely close them off from challenges most people face in their age.
I am saying, that there must be a certain language used for them to understand. If the kids watch tv, then even if it is not news, they are exposed to ads. They must learn to take things with a grain of salt. Understand that TV/computer/mobile device is a device only, not the source of universal truth. I do tell them about the game, they know I was excited about it and that I play i when they are asleep. I do tell them why they can not watch it and I simplify the story down for them to a level they can manage. I tell them little parts like: oh, yesterday in the story my character A found a letter from a father who was thinking on her daughter even when things looked grim and he was happy while thinking on her. Then I make sure they know there is a different character I play, so there are different angles. But I chose which level of depth they are told and what language is used.

We talk about news too, since wherever we go, they'll see ads about politicians and they ask why. They'll walk by shops with newspapers which have pictures and they'll ask what that is. Impossible to avoid. But again, running into something and talking about it is one thing and putting it in their hand and being left alone with them is a different thing.

I don't want to offend anyone, but if you are worried about a few seconds of partial nudity in a game full of violence then something is wrong with you. The human form is a beautiful thing, nothing to shield yourself from. Violence is a ok but god forbid a young person could see a side boob or an ass crack. What would they think? That it's normal to have those body parts? Can't have that now, can we, let's quickly skip to the killing and violence.

Btw, this is an M rated game, it's not meant to be played by children, no matter the content.

Agree 100%, and we gotta give props to our warped Western Judeo-Christian values on this one- where sex is somehow worse than violence.

I'm a married man, and if I would have used any of the "romance" options available in games, I'd have never even got the the first date, let alone been able to convince my amazing wife she actually wants to spend her life with this nerd.

And do you know why?

It's the eye contact that does it.

Its not just the romance.  Its the violence and language.  The Sims 4 has full sexual encounters and thats only rated Teen.

I have never understood people that buy rated M games for their kids and then complain about the content of the game.... <_<

Personally I think ratings in general are stupid.  Its not Bioware's responsibility to raise someone's kids, thats the parents' job.

Uh, I just want to point out that not all the romances are stupid. The Solas one is really well done.

Europe is quite big place though. In most of it's countries it's not okay to be topless on the beach unless it's nudist beach.

Im from Germany and actually... Nobodys saying anything here if women take of their bikini tops to avoid white stripes... As long as you keep your pantys on...

Anyway, here in Germany the game is USK 16... (okay for age 16 and older...)

The reason it's M in the Us is for the romance scenes I believe. Germany is more "No no bad bad violence (against people in a real live setting)"... Games with violence are rated for older buyers usually.
Dead island fe is on index here. It can legally only be sold "under the hand"... It is forbidden to be openly in stores and advertising is forbidden.
If its clear that it's not realistic (fantasy, aliens, robots, green blood etc) and they think kids can differ the game from real live, then its not so bad and it gets lower ratings.
And as long as you don't see primary sexual organs, nudity is okay.

An usk 16 is as absolutely okay in my opinion...

But American people are a little silly when it comes to sex and nudity...

Well I'm mostly talking about PEGI which is European (used in many countries) and gave it 18+. It also has violence and curse word markings. It actually doesn't even mention nudity so I guess that's not so big of problem here.

I don't know what is topless policy in most of countries but I know that at least in my country, Finland, it's not okay to go topless even on beach.

I actually don't know if its allowed...? But I never saw anyone complain... Okay honestly, most times its the women 40+ who take of their tops, and if anyone has a problem with it, its more:

"I don't want to see YOUR breasts"

not

"I don't want to see any breasts"

----

There are parts that are questionable for a usk 16... Leliana cutting the priests throat for example.

Still, an USK 16 is okay, in my opinion.

I mean, no matter the rating, as long as your kid is underage, its your damn job as a parent to make sure your kid isn't overwhelmed by all that stuff in games/tv/movies... Some kids can play DAI at 16 and be okay with it. Other people shouldn't play it and they are way older that 18...

I personally prefer games to have a higher rating, the chance that they cut content is smaller then.

I pretty much agree with this. I think the ratings are needed to show that the games have adult themes and thus they aren't for kids. I don't get the idea of taking out the violence and sex + other adult themes so kids can play too, all entertainment shouldn't be available for everyone since kids obviously have other intrests than adults. I don't mind teenagers of 16-18 playing the 18+ games though since they aren't really kids.. they can decide better themselves what is too much for them.
