I guess the event is supposed to trigger when you walk down the hallway, but what happens is that since you want to explore you open up a side-room to the right and as soon as you open the door the dialogue wheel appears, and apparently there's nothing related in the room but in the hallway instead.

I just don't get it. I thought I was bugged, but I saw an LP on Youtube of the exact same thing happening so I'm thinking it's just a design-flaw. Was Connor that burning corpse in the hallway then?

I walked into a bedroom when I got that dialogue. I could not find a body that looked like Connor further down the corridor or adjacent rooms either. I have no idea what we are actually suppose to see with that.

In my case I heard him talking, and when I opened the door there was a noise and a dialogue wheel appeared, but no matter what I did I could not select an option. When I entered the room, Connor was sitting by the fire and wouldn't interact with me. Weird.

I had not talked to him in Redcliffe before.

I am so glad I'm not the only one that was confused when their inquisitor randomly shouted "Connor no!" and nothing was happening. I spent a few minutes in that room trying to figure out where the body was cause I assumed he committed suicide or something. I saw the dialogue wheel for a moment and thought there was an option to possibly stop him, or try and fail to stop him to earn "you tried" good guy points. But with all the other bugs I was getting in the game, I didn't bother to reload the save to try.

I just knew it'd  be no use. I think that was the first time I felt apathetic about what was going on in the story.

I got it and watched it, Connor runs into the great fireplace to kill himself to avoid being possessed again. Its not hard to catch as long as your looking in the room instead of all over the place.

It's my understanding he's committing suicide to keep from being possessed by another demon.  There is even some commentary immediately following in your group about the scene.  Or there was in mine anyway, so even when I missed seeing it, I knew what had happened.

So where is Connor supposed to kill himself? Is this the bad future?

Yep.

The whole event is handled rather poorly as you can see, lol. It's an issue of it triggering too quickly, wonky camera placement and general disorientation. Would have been much better served as a cutscene of some sort.

where in the quest do you get this to trigger? I think I must have played through that quest 4 times and haven't had this happen to me once yet

i was confused the first time this happened to me :/  i'd completely missed connor in redcliffe, so when i opened the door, all i saw was what looked like someone disintegrating and my trevelyan screaming connor's name.  i really don't think that should've occured if the inquisitor never met connor.

You randomly look into the rooms after closing another time rift.

This is a small, but annoying bug.

In my world state, Connor is alive and NOT possessed. My Inquisitor never talked to Connor before this. So I was quite shocked to see my Dalish inquisitor to react that way - especially since Connor was invisible.

An in-gameplay response you can make in Hushed Whispers quest. What the hell? Where is Connor when this happens, what am I supposed to be looking at, what is going on here?

Wait what?

I've played in hushed whispers twice, met Connor once and never saw or heard anything like this?

When does it happen? Where does it happen? Is this supposed to be part of the dark Alexius future? Or is it somewhere else?

It might have been a poor choice to let the event trigger so early, but I do enjoy the effort that BioWare has put into the ambient reactions and player choice in those situations. For example, when party members are close to death and/or die. You'll hear someone yell, "Solas needs help!" or (when they die) "CASSANDRA!!!"

Wait... you do?  I've never heard that once.  Must be a non-Old Gen thing.

Though you hear plenty of those smart comments in Dragon Age 2, especially if Varric's in the party.  "Maker's Breath, how did they take that woman down?!" and things of the like.

Back on topic, yeah, I've walked into the room, looked around, wondered what the heck is going on.  So it's down the hallway then?  That just seems like such an anti-exploration thing to do, rush on down.

It is in the future part. After you deal with the rifts in the courtyard and enter the royal quarters, Connor is in one of the rooms.

Well thanks for telling me. Now that you mention it I vaguely recall running into a rage demon in one of those rooms, but I think like others the event must have triggered too early and I never saw Connor at all. Thought it was just a rage demon.

Sigh. I'm feel like I've missed so much in this game because of bugs or just flat out brokenness.

It is one of those blink-and-it-is-gone moments.

I heard Connor saying something like "you're not getting me" or maybe "I won't let it happen again" as I approached the door. I opened the door and the inquisitor yelled "Connor, no!" and I saw only the fireplace. Never saw any demon, Connor, whatever. I sort of guessed what had happened and one of the party members (?) confirmed it.

Just another example of Bioware not testing the game before release.

Well maybe it's a 360 thing.  Or a different strain of that no-banter bug that I got.  Ah, well.  Good thing for the Dragon Age wiki, I can read those kind of snarky comments.

It happens very quickly, so you can miss it if you have your attention taken away by the timed dialog response that pops up in your face. Keep in mind that you can pause (at least on PC) when these options come up, giving you time to think of a response, and in this case scope out the scene.

I'm not sure if you have to actually enter the room for the scene to trigger. That said, as soon as you open the door look ahead near the fireplace. Connor immolates himself about a second after you enter. He does this on purpose to prevent himself from being taken over by the demon. Dorian's comments that Connor "held out as long as he could" and that it was "an act of courage" confirm this also. Of course, that's just Dorian's perspective, but I tend to agree.

Also, be sure that you actually talk to Connor in Redcliffe before you go on this mission. You can find him by the docks talking to another mage. The first time I played I didn't know that grown Connor was in the game and on getting to this part in the mission was rather confused. I knew who Connor was, but it made no sense that my character would.
