http://segmentnext.c...d-support-mods/

This article is short on actual info, and I have no idea what "cracked" really means, but is this something BW would cooperate with anyway? Does the modding community even need BW's cooperation? Does the word "cracked" imply that BW never intended for mods to exist?

"Cracking" is very much the wrong word to use in that article to describe what those modders are doing.

Cracking, as far as video gaming goes, very specifically refers to the act of breaking & removing DRM from a game to enable it to be pirated. Modders do NOT crack games. They MOD games.

These modders are NOT cracking DAI. They are merely experimenting with the game to find a way to allow mods on it. This difficulty has much to do with the fact it's the frostbite engine, which is extremely unwieldly to modify in any shape without the actual dev kit, which only bioware would have (or DICE I suppose).

These modders aren't "Cracking" the game, just to be clear - they're just figuring out how to MOD the game.  (On a related note, apparently Chinese crackers have supposedly broken through Denuvo DRM in the past few days which will likely mean DAI will start to get pirated not too far in the future :(

The term cracking in this instance is an unfortunate choice by the author.  Cracked generally means stripping the DRM protection scheme from an executable in order to pirate the game.  That is a crime.

You also agreed, when you signed your EULA,  to not reverse engineer or otherwise Modify, Distribute, Perform , etc. You get the picture.  What these guys are doing, is at least a technical violation of their EULA.

My hope is that their attempts to mod DA:I will get DICE off their fundaments and working on some sort of modding tools.  At the least, a moddable exe. would be nice. Without that, released by EA/Bioware/Dice I won't be running any of the mods.

Mods are on the way, matter of time. Please consider that the Frostbite engine was not created in that optic some the mods might be very minimal.

Which is why I questioned what the article's author actually meant by "cracked." I'm certainly not accusing any modders of anything illegal. What I'm asking is BW's attitude towards mods for DA:I, is their any indication they might release appropriate tools, and is it realistic for modders to create their own tools thus giving us hope for a game with added life like Skyrim?

Without changes to the file structure as understood by the .exe, you would have to modify the game assets directly.  It is doable, but it is the last way you really want to mod.  What the game needs is an override folder, a package folder, etc.  It will probably get those with the first DLC. After that, someone will need to produce some kind of package manager and package merger so that you are not stuck creating and installing mods by hand. I have hand modded before and probably will again, but it is not high on my list of favorite pass-times.

supposedly this added protection didn't do much to improve sales if articles on the internet typed up by users who have half the fact and quite probably have an agenda are to be believed.
