Has anybody else noticed that bears seem to be the most determined enemies in this game?  It's to the point that I wonder if somebody at Bioware had a bad experience with bears or something.  Humanoid enemies don't general engage unless I get within a certain radius or attack them first.  On the other hand bears seem to be hunting me, from the top of the bandit castle in the Hinterlands I watched one come over a hill and head towards the castle entrance to get at me.

This isn't really meant as a complaint more an observation.

Ohhh yes. I finished up the southwest part of the Hinterlands at level 12, and had normal and great bears chasing me all over the place. Once I stopped to fight a great bear and a second joined in, followed by two of those hard-hitting lyrium smugglers. That was fun. :P I really wish the camera could be zoomed out further, you can't really see anything as it is and I often find myself unpleasantly surprised by extra enemies I couldn't see coming.

I've had some luck outwitting bears by running up a ledge or pile of rocks with them on my heels, and then jumping off. They get stuck because their AI can't figure out how to jump off too, or run back down. Without that trick or a convenient hostile NPC group for them to glomp onto, they can chase you for bloody ages.

Worse if you're near a spawn point or there are wolves in the area. I've attacked a group of bandits and gotten attacked by wolves mid battle and then a bear.

It`s kind of silly how almost all RPGs feature aggressive killer bears and wolves that fight to the death.

One of the problems in this game are ambigious area attacks. Bear is one of the worst examples as it does the frontal slam with both paws. Attack seems to be 360 degree AOE, although visually it would make sense to make it maybe 90 degree cone in front of it.

Its actually quite annoying how suicidal some of the wildlife is - like wolves and so forth.  Especially if you are looking for a shard (and, usually, looking for a way to REACH a shard).  To the point, I often overkill just to get rid of the damn things.

Not just RPGs. I hated this about FarCry 3.

At least the wolves are supposed to be possessed or something, I think

In Skyrim...bears run away when low on health....before resuming the fight with you. It happened with me a lot of times...and no, I did not have a bear mod.

Yes.

He actually managed to get inside that small room with us. It was a traumatic experience, everyone but Blackwall died.

The thing that really annoys me about bears is how they do AoE damage behind them

Yes, I think it`s vanilla AI bug or broken feature. Bandits also surrender and then almost instantly continue to fight.

Bears, yes...

I went to the Hinterlands recently to deal with some bad folks, and when I got there, I saw a bear eating them. That bear literally stole my job... and then it exploded, with everything it just eat... Never disappoint a necromancer, so they say.

Bioware's Canadian roots showing :D

Its quite realistic for bears though (not the hyper-aggressive AI); thick and tough hide with thick fat padding, a mountain of muscles stronger than 5 men combined, claws as long as human hands, and speed freaks who can reach in excess of 60km/h (or 37.5mph).

Bears are no doubt bad muther shut your mouth critters.

The problem is bears aren't herd animals which they appear to be in this fame. I don't mind tough bears, I mind fighting a bear only to have another and then another attack me and when I finish with that bloodbath to walk 2 meters and be attacked by even more bears. Especially early on they will mess you up but going back to camp solves nada thanks to re spawn because next time they are right back there.
