Cassandra feels weak now, enemies can destroy her guard easily and do serious damage to her

Sounds like time!! What level are you, and what does she have? Me cassandras been stonewall most of the game, always last to die. I had all tier 3 by 15 or 16

Vanguard Coat 123 armor

Warden Helmet  20 armor

Darkspawn alpha Shield 20 armor

Axe 133 DPS

All the armor have various +melee, + rangeda and + magic defense

 

I have been taking SnS + Templar abilities though, and neglecting Vanguard tree (except for the taunts)

The taunts are good for guard generation. You should start getting t3 schema soon at your level, or buy them in hissing wastes, the vendor in the canyon sells a bunch of armor....not sure if he sells schematics. Empress De lion has schematics vendor with t3 also. And craft her some armor with fade touched obsidian (you get in locked house near inn in red cliff if you have deft hands) and she will almost never die. It gives plus 3guard per hit.

Ooh, still shrine or whatever, in western approach just nw of main camp....some t3 weapons and schematics can be found there. But mostly just in the two locked doors. Hate to recommend the "leave one item in the chest" exploit, but if you don't at least get something good it's not terribly unreasonable

Seems the game intended for you to get them around 15+ to me, more or less.

I got them at 15, well worth it.

Get Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade. Those two abilities make more of a difference than anything else.
