I hope I can help people on how to get better on equipment and always stay ahead of enemies. more so in nightmare difficulty levels.
The way to go about it is through "farming" chests. I do agree it's kinda power gaming; min/max your party but more so for the patience and those who want to have perfect games.
The item you seek is schematics. Any will do as long as you get a schematics.
The reason being crafted items are always stronger than blue items especially at high level.
Also most blue items are defensive items. attack arm or feet or grips etc comes from schematics.
You will have enough chests to "farm" so there is no need to keep reloading for a specific schematics
Note that some mastercraft schematics are placed by the game at certain specific locations.
Schematics do not duplicate meaning if you got a tier 1 rugged bow, you will never find another one anyway in game anymore.
Say there are 24 schematics for tier 1 for all armor, everytime you get 1 schematic, 23 will be left to farm. unfortunately I do not know how many for each tier. luckily, everytime you get 1, the number reduces.
The following is the method:
1) when a treasure chest is found, quick save 5 steps before reaching the chest; before entering a house, save before stepping through a door way. This will ensure you can quick load if you did not get a schematics. it will not work if the chest was being "scanned" or save too near to it. but mouse over a chest is ok as long as not "searched" by radar.
2) The best content when farming chest is aim for 1 schematics and 1 random grey/blue/valuables. The reason is because you can just take the schematic, leave the grey/blue/valuables inside so as to keep that chest "lootable" next time after you zone. The content will be refreshed and you can farm schematics again.
3) if the chest do not contain a schematic, simply reload and try again or come back few hours later after rezone to farm again.
4) for ingredient bags, always look for cloth x 3 of the highest tier. the reason is because cloth cannot be mined or gathered. cloth has 1/3 chance of dropping from enemies. and as more and more enemies died, the chance of getting cloth reduces even for tier 3. out of all materials, cloth is the hardest to farm. so don't waste chance for those nylon bags to spawn metal or leather.
Edit: Generally, in haven, farm the chests and if no schematics, do not empty the chest. go to hinterland or other maps to refresh the chests.
it is ok to get schematics from haven chests for tier 1 because eventually, you will move to another stronghold.
Lastly, as long as the chest is "lootable" it can be "farmed" forever.
I hope this farming guide helps.
If you don't need to do this or against this, simply ignore this posts and take whatever in your chests and move on =)
