Regardless of how much my Inquisition scours the land, it can't find that rarest of items.

A nice looking longsword with good stats.

Seriously, I'm using axes on all my sword and shield characters. Any advice? Schematics will do.

I can't give the best advice yet because I'm still learning.  I too, am using axes more than swords because of stats and drops.  The axes I'm getting are much better in damage and they drop more often than decent swords.  Sadly, by the time I get a rare sword, not the unique swords, my axe is doing way more damage than what's offered.

Best thing to do early on is probably make your own and upgrade.  You'll have to collect materials and try merchants that have schematics for swords and runes.   Also, I noticed that merchants usually have better stat swords than what I find.  But buying stuff for the whole party will break the bank.  Especially if you decide to give all party optional characters stuff.

Just yesterday I found that each area that has a merchant has exclusive sales to their area.  Unique stuff may be a hassle, but you can get decent stuff through merchants and crafting.  I'm working on researching what other people are posting about merchants in certain locations to get arms or armor that looks good and has good stats.  It was so much easier in previous DAs because DA:I is huge!  So much to learn.

I'm a good 60+ hours into the game, and I'm using axes as well.  I've yet to find a good long sword.  I have searched everywhere I can.  I've even done the farming at the Cradle of Suliven, and STILL haven't gotten anything.  Sword and Shield is such a joke in this game.  It was way better in the previous games.

Best 1hand sword is Caliban which drops from the dragon in the collapsed stadium in Emprise du Lion.

Best 1hand sword is Caliban which drops from the dragon in the collapsed stadium in Emprise du Lion.

The first couple dragons in there aren't too bad.  I don't remember what level I was on my first play through, but the third dragon is tough.  I didn't beat him out of the few tries I attempted.  Just ran away when I was out of potions.  Probably because I didn't try any strategy other than a straight forward blitz.  Hoping my second play through I'll get that last dragon.

I think I remember getting that sword off one of the first two dragons.  My party was Iron Bull, Sera, Vivienne and myself as a Rift Mage.  The sword was given to Cassandra and she never got to use it other than practicing perhaps.

The Dwarven Longsword schematic is a random drop from loot chests in the Tier 3 zones. It looks nice, in my own opinion, especially when paired with the Tevinter Longsword Grip.

Stats-wise, yes, the DPS is behind the axes and maces. It's a problem that you'll find with all longswords, it seems. Interestingly, the DPS is higher, but per-hit, the maces and axes do around the same damage as longswords. Could be that there's a display bug somewhere. Or they genuinely strike a lot faster, which makes no sense in my opinion.

Putting aesthetics and the like aside, is there ANY advantage to taking a longsword over a mace/axe currently? Purely academic, of course, because I use longswords regardless.

My understanding is that Longswords actually do more damage than axes and maces per hit, but have lower DPS stats. The key is to look at the damage number instead of the DPS number. Thankfully, the damage number is located directly under the DPS number, so you can easily find it. Given that the Longswords have lower DPS but higher damage, I w assume that there are differences in Attack Speed between the different weapon types. However, I'm not good enough to notice if this is actually the case.

Also worth noting: since seeing the post mentioning this, I've been using Damage, not DPS, to determine what weapons to give Warriors, on the grounds that ability damage is based on the Damage stat, not the DPS stat. Since starting this practice, Cassandra has almost never had anything except a Sword equipped (she had the Morning Star after the Tutorial, for example). However, I've only recently finished the Hinterlands (only 3 Fade Rifts and a High Dragon left and I'm done), and haven't started on In Hushed Whispers/Champions of the Just yet. My results may not hold up through the entire game. In addition, I expect to have a few issues to do with level; a mace or axe that is a higher level than the sword she's currently using can easily do more damage. Still, the majority of the time, she's ended up with a sword, so the evidence seems to support the theory that Swords do more damage than Maces or Axes.
