So I like Iron Bull, he's a bad ass and funny and he doesn't let people tell him what to do, I mean what are they gonna do, right? But with Vivienne in the party he becomes this spineless little bi*** ex:
Viv: Iron Bull darling, stop picking at that scab it'll never heal properly
Iron Bull: But it'll make a really cool scar, look it already looks like...uugghh ok, sorry ma'am, I'll put the bandage back on
And again..
Viv: Iron Bull are you going to clean your weapon from the last battle?
Iron Bull: Uh no, we'll be killing something else in a few minutes anyway and the blood makes it more scary, you know the bad guys see blood all over a weapon and think...uuhh..mmm..ok I'll clean it, sorry ma'am.
Like what the hell? I don't understand why he lets her tell him what to do. I mean I thought that's who he was. I specifically remember watching a video of Bulls voice actor saying his previous character, James in ME3, was the kind of soldier who was ready to take orders and follow em, but Iron Bull don't tell him what to do, you don't give him orders, he'll probably smash you. So why is Iron Bull so submissive to Vivienne it seems out of character for him....

I don't think he tries to get her approval, per se. He's just super polite and she's horribly mean to him. He can get super defensive around her if she pushes him far enough.Blackwall is kind of the same way with her. He seems like he strives to get her approval in almost every conversation.

Same here. I think she is ridiculously overdressed, close minded, power hungry and manipulative. Not intimidating in nature.
As for why Vivienne and Iron Bull have this dynamic...well...because Bioware wants to portray Vivienne as a strong woman and they had to do it by pussifying the alpha male Qunari in the group....

I agree with the ones saying Vivienne's power hungry- I respect her for being a mage who's gained such influence and power, but she's a snake in fancy clothing. She cares about the Inquisition only insofar as they have influence that will further her goals.
Iron Bull respects her authoritative tone and commanding presence because it reminds him of the mother figures he was provided with as a child, but if push came to shove he would totally take her down if the Inquisition needed him to.
