The most simplistic combat in DA yet?

I must say that so far I'm really disappointed with combat in DA:I. After I watched trailers I thought that I can expect combat to be more meaningful and complex than in DA2, but it's actually much more simple. There are fewer skills, there are no healing spells, there are no tactics (unless you call turning on/off skills for AI tactics)... You can't even select multiple characters at once. It feels like some brawler and not RPG game. Game could be fun, if I would expect action game and not party based rpg. Now it feels like "press 'R' to continue", because of how little options I have and how easy combat is.

It's pity because other elements of the game are great.

Turn up the difficulty and put friendly fire on if you want a challenge.

Pretty much this.

You want more complicated combat. I read a thread here last night where someone was complaining about the combat being TOO involved, saying they want a game where they build a character and send it into combat and watch it win.

They'll never please everyone. I like what they went with... I'd just like a fireball skill  :wizard:

Tactical combat has been removed and replaced with button mashing action combat, because of "progress" or something.

I always play on the highest difficulty setting and I have friendly fire turned on. It's still much easier than previous games.

I like it better than both DA games. I'd like some tweaks made to it, especially concerning giving orders in tatical view, but it's very good.

Isn't it like that right now? On lower difficulty levels you can just hold "R" and win combat.

Challenge =/= complexity. Challenge =/= tactical.

Something about this thread smacks of E-Peen stroking to be honest.

Hardest difficulty + friendly fire is not easy, it limits options for who you can even bring along with you.

If that is too easy for you then this is simple, the game was made to encompass as many players as possible and get them to enjoy it so they can maximize profits. If you are such the gaming god that this game is a triviality and you wanted hard combat, well clearly this is not the game for you. You aren't their market which kind of sucks. Good luck finding the medieval torture device of your dreams though.

Bingo. You want a challenging experience that requires skill and team coordination "In heart shall burn" on hard or nightmare/Duchess fight on hard on nightmare.

The combat is so boring. Three- four enemies, kill with the same eight abilities. Rinse and repeat with respawn. Whack whack boom, whack whack boom. I truly miss the auto attack and loath this mouse killing button mashing.

I always go "tactical" cam when in combat, hate button mashing and the PC swinging the sword at empty air because it won´t close distance by itself. Who thought this was a good idea? And when will they learn they won´t get brawlers players by doing this, but only ****** off their actual player base?

Edit - that wasn´t a swear word, forum corrector has some funny parameters.

On higher difficulty levels your guys get slaughtered if you're not tanking effectively/and or using barriers right.  I'd say it was the most tactical of the games.

The con side is that it relies on the artificial tanking mechanics to do it, but it's still tactical.

Well on consoles Dragon Age Origins didn't have "move here" command at all. So on consoles, the origins was way more simple. Because commanding your companions didn't work so well.

If you were playing Origins on anything but PC you were doing it wrong.

In which case, going off sales, 89% of people who played Origins did it wrong.

Good thing we did, or the PC master race would never have gotten Awakening, let alone anything else.

I'm not hating on consoles. I played DAO first on PS3 the on PC, but the fact remains that it was designed for PC with mouse and keyboard, and that the port to console required significant sacrifices in terms of graphics resolution, frame rates, and controls, making it less than the complete experience. If you played Origins on console, you just didn't get to experience the game in its intended form. Unless you played on PC and used tactical cam in its original implementation, you won't understand why a lot of PC players are so upset about the state of it in DAI.

I adore Origins and I've completed it 6 times or more but I don't know where this belief that it is a difficult game comes from because it isn't, even on nightmare. You have far too many potions, op spells, op gear and class builds for it to be difficult.

I don't think it's so much a question of difficulty as it is a question customisability and controls. When people say the combat is simplistic, they mean that you are limited in what commands you can give your party, what skills and talents you can give them, and what gear you can equip them with, all of which serve to limit and simplify what you can have them do in combat, thus reducing your tactical options and making the gameplay seem less interesting.

Origins was easy mode honestly after they patched it due to whining.
But anyways, the only thing I really see as being a pain is the ai not staying on target.

I have to pause more in inq personally, I just set tactics in origins and stayed on my warden.

This is the easiest of the three Dragon Age titles playing on Nightmare mode.

The only remotely challenging thing is having the AI do what you tell them to.

This exactly.

It's not about combat being easy or difficult (a.k.a. "challenge"), but rather about how the mechanics were simplified by having less options so the game feels more like an action game.

All flash and no substance. It's not just Dragon Age, either. This is an issue for the AAA game scene as a whole. In a few years time you won't even be able to play the games. They'll play themselves and ask you to make a story decision every once in a while... and it'll probably be who you want to have digital sex with.
