How good is DW vs Archery? My current inquisitor is a Dwarf and Varric is always in the party so two ranged dwarfs sounds cool and not at the same time. Currently I am thinking he'll be an Artificer regardless of weapons (twice the Passives sounds nice) but then again, if Archer, he will just be a Varric Clone so that has me thinking of going to another specialization as well.

Other pertinent info:
I play with Tactical view most of the time.
The main party I use is Me, Varric, Solas, and Cassandra / Blackwall / Iron Bull (I rotate warriors)

Not playing on nightmare myself (it would be, excuse the pun, a nightmare to play on the hardest difficulty).

DW rogues becomes solid at level 7 or so. Once you got Deathblow, you are golden.

Flank attack + upgrade, Twin fang, Dance of Death, Sneak Attack, Deathblow, Stealth. 7 points requires. 2 from the start. So level 5 actually, or 4 as a human. You can also craft Tier 2 gear from level 4 or so, and get tier 2 metals from the Oasis.(Paragon Luster). So that means you can get some mid-tier gear rather quick.

Then they get even better with Evade, which is 2 more point. And an absolute beast with looked like it hurt and cheap shot, which is 3 more points.

So a fully monster non-specialization rogue is built by level 10, or 9 as a human. We can then add Poisoned Weapons for good measure for level 12. Level 12 is the highest level you can get, without grinding levels, before going to Skyhold.

Archer is the easiest one early game. By far. So that might count for something, I don't know.

To the OP:

The problem with your question is that you play in Tactical. That is.. different. DW rogue requires careful play and positioning. I am not sure if you can do that quick enough using tactical camera. If so, archer is definitively the best.

Well that's sad. I was interested in going DW for standing out from Varric and to make my Character look more like Letho from Witcher (who partially inspired my rogue):

This is Letho

What about the specialization?

Hey, I just said I wasn't certain if it would work. Give it a shot ;) I never use tactical camera for more than re position, so I wouldn't really know how quickly and precisely you can move a dw rogue. That's for you to find out, I guess.

At any rate, it cost next to nothing to respec into archery if it becomes a problem.

Right now I think my dwarf is level 7. If I wanted to go the Letho inspired route, maybe tempest fits best?

Most likely. Judging by the video, he seem more about control than stealthy-assassination. Besides, the flask he throws -- looks like flask of frost to me ;)

Well I just tried the DW spec for a bit. It wasn't fun. :(
Got people killed left and right. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

Try getting Knockout Powder for Sleep and CC. This will help protect some of your other characters and, in tac cam, will help you retreat when necessary. Do you have a mage that can cause Freeze? This works really well with Rogue Shatters.

I have all my Mages with the basic Ice Spell.
I might be biased but the damage wasn't there. Granted, I was only level 7 so it might have been suboptimal. Archery's Full Draw is bonkers level damage compared to what daggers did.

Full draw hits for insanely hard. It's also costy, takes time to fire and is only preferred when an enemy is at 100% health.

Twin FangDeath Blow will take out the vast majority of archers/mages throughout the game. The bug with Deathblow is annoying, but the damage makes it worth it.

Winter's grasp is a must-have for mages. Not for the damage, but for the CC. It also lets you shatter, which efficiently doubles your damage during that attack. Twin Fangs hit for 1k, shatter hits for 1.2k. A good start!

Generally: Archer hits harder sustained, from a range and can 1-shot most non-armored enemy with a full draw crit. (3.3k at level 7...). DW rogue got higher burst, and will annihilate any non-armored-target in seconds.

Archer is the easiest one, due to this game really favoring ranged. However, DW rogue got the highest potential damage output of the two. It does require you to give it a 100% focus though, which I sadly don't think you can reach via tactical camera.
