I've been having a similar problem.  It came and went throughout the introductory mission, but I was able to play through it.  Now I'm on the 1st mission after meeting IM, and I've reached a point where I simply can't interact with any object or character.  So far I haven't found any setting that appears to influence it.

Thank you both for posting this.

I have a problem of being unable to use the first locker (to get the pistol), which, given how early it was, thought was a problem related to my system specs (I'm right on the "edge"). Now that I know there is supposed to be a blue square, I realize that (in game terms) I wasn't "close enough". Of course, maybe I'll still be unable to get the blue square, but at least it gives me hope for when I get home...[grin]

If not, I'll see if adding more memory helps in case it's related to graphics processing. May I ask, are your systems minimum specs or do they exceed them?

I'm having the same problem. I reset my key bindings and nothing. I'm stuck in the medbay and can't get the pistol.

The USE key worked fine in the Prologue sequence.

@epeeist: My system exceeds minimum specs, so presumably that's not the problem.
@EnolaFay13: For a while, doors appeared to work better from farther away.  At first I thought it was related to camera angle, but that doesn't seem to effect anything other than doors, and I've now run into a door I can't interact with at all.

Going to and from the menu method works for me and so far nearing the end of the game. Also lowering the resolution a bit has meant I don't need to do that as much. If I was willing to play on the lowest resolution then this problem dissapears or it did when I tried it.

I have the same problem,
and the "going to and from the menu" trick doesn't work for me......

I did notice that sometimes nothing is wrong and i can click everything but after a while, the bug suddenly pops up <_<

I'm joining the whole "can't get the first pistol boat" But I have to ask: Does anyone know of a real fix to this problem yet or is it all still in the works for being fixed?

There's a big thread about this and a BioWare programmer solved the problem. You can't interact with objects if your framerate is too low. Get a PC that meets the minimum system requirements or play at a very low resolution and in windowed mode.

Could you post them anyway? You'd be surprised how many people say they exceed minimum req because "Can You Run It dot Com says so". Check your framerate using Fraps. If it's below 14 then that could be the problem.

Im afraid thats not the solution, framerate issn't so relative into this,i got te same problem and i found out myself the in menu-back to game solution but now im in the normandy, quite advanced in the game and ONLY the personal computer and the galaxy map flash from orang to blue and back to orange, like a light with low power, but the other stuff work fine inside the normandy, problably it has a lot to do with framerate but anyway its wierd that only those two things work weird atm.

also...i noticed something :/ my graphics card is radeon hd 5450 wich is quite good but insimply cant run ME in a astandard resolution...i have to go 1200x820 at best,i know my card is good,i can run Mount&Blade with very high graphics in great batlles of about 100 soldiers wthout too many framerate issues, but mass effect runs so weird,i couldn't enjoy ME 1 fully because of this so...just in case you know what the hell is going on...plz help?

No. The Radeon HD 5450 is in fact quite bad. You do not have any valid complaint about ME2 while trying to use such a really terribly inexpensive tinker toy. Even the latest of Intel's quite awful onboard chipset video chips can match the poor 5450.

The galaxy map is quite heavy on your hardware. I get great framerates all around the Normandy and when I'm near the galaxy map it can drop below thirty.

The HD 5450 is indeed an entry-level card. It's very close to the absolute minimum.

maybeee....buying an exact same card (radeon hd 5450) and making both work together would make me have a "good" gaming system?

One HD 5450 is pretty cheap. Two of them equal one single 5570 for that card's performance, One 5570 is how much more expensive than a single 5450? Maybe $10, so, for $35 times two, you have $70 spent. I just saw Newegg selling one HD 5570 for $40 after the rebate.

Either way, you then have a "beginner level" budget card's performance. It takes the HD 5670 before we can reach "good" performance.

You can get one of those for $60 after the rebate:

www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx

One HD 5670 has three times, plus a little, as good of a performance as one HD 5450, and about twice as good of a performance as one HD 5570.

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

When anyone wants "Very Good" gaming performance, they have to skip past the HD 5670 on up to the HD 5770.  As you can see, it is the hundreds digit making the difference in their names, the generation number has limited effect upon overall performance.  The best card from AMD last year was the HD 5970, which was a very expensive card that had two GPU chips from the HD 5870, working together on one card.

This year, from last winter, the Radeon generation is the HD 6n00, and the HD 6450 is only very slightly better than the HD 5450 had been.  The HD 6570 is moderately improved in performance compared to the HD 5570, and that is more or less the relationship between the HD 5670 and the HD 6670.  Sadly enough, the HD 6750 and 6770 are merely renamed versions of last year's HD 5750 and 5770.

Doctored to look decent is what you can see. An HD 5450 is not even as useful as either of the graphics options in the Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs, & neither of those is actually "good enough".

guess what,i found out i was playing in the wrong resolution for my monitor, lately i have been on low ones without laging at all..but i found out my monitor was...1240x1024 D:

that means im screwed,so i go to ME 2...change the resolution to this super high number and...it works just fine! :D so i can play on super high quality without problems, yay!

the downside is that i don't think that ill happen with ME 3 :P
