My guess is that if he survives, he may show up again as the head of the Bull's Chargers, perhaps in an encounter with the Next DA Player Character.
Yeah, this I could see.
It could work if they have an interchangeable companion, a Kaidan/Ashley type as you say. But the issue is, will it make sense story wise?

So looks like Tevinter, Rivain, and the Qunari are in the cards. Definitely looking forward to seeing a stronger Qunari presence.
Dorian may not become a companion, but he will definitely be involved in the next game in some form. Everyone else, it's safe to say we've seen the last of them aside from whatever DLC they'll use to wrap up Inquisition.
Yeah, agreed with Krem. I'm just thinking that it's not really worth it to try to cram him in as a companion.
I also agree about Dorian. If we go to Tevinter, I suspect that he'll show back up again. But I just can't see him being a companion.
For one, I have a strong feeling that Maevaris will be our Tevinter magister companion. Gaider really likes her character and wanted to add her into DA: I, but she was developed too late in the process. I think she plays a perfect bridge, to be honest: she's related to Varric (the central narrator of the past two games); she's another 'good magister' (to act as the counterbalance to all of the magister supremacy stuff we'll likely see); and she's already connected to Dorian in a positive given his War Table missions. I have a feeling that she's going to fill the human Tevinter magister spot in any game that takes us to the Imperium.
Second, if Dorian comes back, he can't be an LI, given that he was already one in DA: I and that romance can end on a positive note. So that would mean that there would still need to be two major bisexual or gay males in addition to Dorian in order to ensure that there are two m/m romance options. I just think that they aren't likely to do this, as much as I would like them to. I think that they will see this as too much. We've already gotten Gaider's "putting the cart ahead of the horse" comments to the idea of more gay romances.
