I prefer minor NPCs as future companions. Because we already formed a bond with our team and moving them to another protagonist just feels wrong. Let them stay with their friends. Im sure there are a lot of other interesting characters in Thedas.

Scout Harding and Krem seem most likely to appear in the next game in a major or much larger role.

Bevin, the adventurer with the Green Sword, seriously I want to see this plot point in the Keep go somewhere.

If the next sequel focuses on the Qunari, then IB and Sten would be great returns. If it takes place in Tevinter then Dorian and Fenris (who apparently returned to hunt slavers) would be good. Leliana and Cullen have both made appearances in all 3 games and I see no reason that they wouldn't at least make a return.
Personally, i'd like it if we actually had a sentient Darkspawn become a main companion... would certainly make things interesting.

I'd love it if we had something like this, although the only way I could see such a character existing is in a world-state where the Warden is alive and researching a cure for the Calling, you spared the Architect in Awakening and Avernus was allowed to continue his experiments (ethically). With all those plot points active, it'd make sense to find a darkspawn or two who've perhaps been experimented on so they're no longer Blight-contagious, as part of their joint efforts?
Sadly, because it'd be so plot-specific, they'd probably only be a temporary companion, but it'd still be cool if we had something like that, since we already had Justice in Awakening and no-one seemed to raise too many eyebrows about the walking, talking corpse following us about.
My only concern about a heroic Darkspawn is that they might end up being revealed to be a double-agent, since;
And as I forgot to mention them last time, it'd be great to see the Bull's Chargers appear in a cameo in another game, especially Krem.

Darkspawn companion wouldn't work. In Awakening, if you let the Messenger live, he will roam the world commiting good deeds, but at the same time he ends up spreading the taint to whoever comes in close contact with him.
As for other characters returning, rescue mission to bring back Hawke, Loghain or Alistair (nobody cares about Stroud anyway....)

I miss Sandal! I know that Bodahn was getting old, but where is Sandal? I miss the little guy and his.. "Enchanment? Enchantment!". I'm glad to see Varric is back. I'm thrilled to see Cullen (I've loved him since I played my first Mage character), but I WANT MY SANDAL BACK! Wow, that seems kinda weird to see in print!

My top choice would definitely have to be Merrill; with the increased focus on Elven lore in Inquisition, she'd be a great fit for any follow-up titles, and it would be awesome to see how she's grown and come into her own since the end of the second game. She could also provide some more ambiguity with the whole blood magic issue, and the fact that she might have a working Webway Gate would be cool to explore. Beyond that, just having that compassionate, curious and awesomely-voiced little Dalish back would be a reason in and of itself.
I also wouldn't mind seeing Hawke return. Let's face it, the character doesn't really get all that great an arc over the franchise thus far; s/he engages in some fights that amount to nothing, s/he ends up making everything worse accidently, or at the very least has all of his or her successes backfiring, and then the character either
Would love to see the Awakening Wardens again as well. Besides having some heroic BAMF Wardens again, they're all pretty cool characters who didn't get as much of an opportunity to be explored as they deserved.

Bevin with the Green Blade as a companion, Dorian as a companion (if set in Tevinter), Isabella as a faction leader (if set in Rivain), and Sten now Arishok as a faction leader (if set in Tevinter or Rivain).
I also want the Hawke siblings to return if we pass through the Anderfells.

Okay so I love Fenris so I obviously want him and my female mage Hawke to be in any and every game together.
For future games in general, I think it'd be really nice to see the Awakening companions, (King) Alistair, Fiona, Jowan, Aveline and Donnic, Varric, Bodahn, Sandal, the HoF- especially if he romanced Morrigan and followed her through the eluvian, Solas and Flemeth because there are too many lose ends... oh and master wade because dragon scale armour!
Also I really think Merril should be brought back as well. With a lot of Inquisition having ties to elven lore, I think she should be included in future games mainly because of her eluvian (one wonders why Corypheus never invaded Kirkwall for it even though it was broken/dormant). Since her eluvian is inactive, one assumes that it's because she does not have the right key to activate it and then there's the issue with Tamlen who disappeared when she was investigating her mirror regardless of the HoF's origin.
If a future game is centered more around the Anderfels or Weissaupt then it definitely should have Carver/Bethany, possibly Anders because as it is there is no authority that the Wardens really answer to and there should be justice if he survives the events of DA2, Blackwall assuming he's told to join the Wardens and survives. For something that involved Tevinter, it'd be awesome to have Krem (assuming survived), Dorian, the Iron Bull (especially if in a relationship with Dorian), Varania (if she lives), and Maevaris Tilani.
For companions in the future I think new characters are better idea than old ones mainly because it gives a fresh start and it's better to have new ones to develop since DA fans have certain views of how some characters should be like, but I wouldn't be opposed to having old characters as companions, or scout Harding.

Abelas was a very interesting thing i heard mentioned.... very intriguing.... though judging from his the way he spoke to us, if we convinced him to leave, i find it hard to believe he would help anyone other than the ancient elves, he even called my dalish inquisitor a shem... he might come back as a villain, who knows

And Oghren! And Sten. I loved Sten.
And Sandal of course! It was a nice surprise that Dagna showed up after helping her get into the circle, but was really hoping for Sandal :<
Oops, I named no one from DA:I.. Well definitely Dorian. Abelas was interesting too and I'll have to agree with the goat-thrower!

Yeah i wouldnt mind a game that actualy took into account all the choices you made in all the games and really modified characters and things you can recruit as actual party members and such. However that would basicaly be almost like making a few games at once if they realy let choices inpact the next game and not just be flavoring. But can you imagine the replayability if you could have completely different sets of characters and companions and romances in a 4th game based on choices from previous games. Not to mention if they drasticaly altered sotry elements and playable content based on previous choices so it was a different game each time content / plot / and accessable based on previous games choices.
That aside like most people think scout harding needs a main role and to be made romancable by dwarf players.

Assuming the next game moves north Dorian would make the most sense as DA4's Varric. He is Tevinter and stated a desire to return home, so he makes a bit more sense to cross paths with a northern protagonist than some of the other companions.
I'd love to run into Carver or Bethany Hawke if they are Wardens. You could always have them show up at Weisshaupt.
I'd like to see Duke Otranto return as a minor character. His cameo in the Josephine romance arc was interesting, and he is an Antivan Duke.

Cole. I feel like there is still a lot of potential growth from him. Especially if you put him on the human route. It's not like we got slides this time showing what happens to all our companions(even if they do get disregarded sometimes). Although the choice in his quest makes this unlikely, I'm aware.
Maevaris, Harding, Dagna, Abelas and Krem. I also know of the latter twos potential deaths but I'm mostly listing based on my personal interest, not likely-hood.

I really want to see Anders/Justice again and what became of him/them. Unfortunately there would no big part for him since there's a choice to execute him (unless he were to cheat death for a second time =P)
And Oghren! And Sten. I loved Sten.
And Sandal of course! It was a nice surprise that Dagna showed up after helping her get into the circle, but was really hoping for Sandal :<

Well, there's the choice to kill Loghain and Alistair and they can both enjoy reasonably major roles in Inquisition.
My only issue with Anders returning is that if there was a place for him to return, it would have been in Inquisition. Obviously we can't know what the next game's plot will be, but given the apparent mission statement of distancing itself from the existing games to show us a new side of Thedas, I wouldn't imagine the plot is going to be tightly connected to this one. As such I think an Anders cameo would be out of place there - total assumption and speculation on my part, of course.
I wouldn't be at all opposed to Anders/Justice appearing in Inquisition DLC, though.
