So I was just wandering how useful or useless other people think this skill is. Personally I use it, but necessary is it really?

Best. Ability. Ever.

Terror demon up my ass? Roll.

Middle of a mighty Blow animation as the dragon wants to kick me? Roll.

Arrow my way? Roll.

Too far away from an enemy? Roll.

Just hit a mauler and he is about to smash around himself? Roll.

It's amazing!

It is indeed very useful for two-handed warriors on higher difficulties. Extremely useful in the multiplayer but I guess that's off-topic.

Excellent for 2H warrior, especially when upgraded. I don't see a need for it on my S&S warrior, however, since they're already mobile and already have a purge ability.

Great ability but it would be even better if enemy wizards tossed out more disabling spells.

Currently playing an offensive SnS and I love it.  That and the hook-chain ability are the most useful abilities I have at the moment.

I think it's more useful for damage-dealers though, personally.  If you're building a tanky character, I wouldn't invest the points to try and get it.  Though, if you think you can create a good defense-based build with it, by all means go for it.  :)

Not sure about warrior combat roll but if its equal to evade and fade step - then it should shorten travel time on foot.

My rogue is using evade to move around like all the time everywhere.

Not useful on a geared SnS tank in most situations. The damage you avoid (usually 1 damage) late game is not worth the stamina to neither dodge nor block.

Highly useful on 2H warriors, especially AI. Evade-type abilities always work amazingly on AI.

Combat Roll is as of now my favorite ability in the game. I would never have passed the haven assault on nightmare if I wasn't controlling Cassandra with Combat Roll.

As mentioned above the AI does a good job rolling as well, helps with those big maul wielding guys on higher difficulties.

Hmm, I didn't have any problem with Cassandra dying in Haven fighting the Templars. Just place her one side of the enemies and she'll stay alive. Pick off whatever is trying to flank her. This was on my first playthrough as a Mage, and the others were Sera and Solas. When you spec her right, placement is everything.

I noticed that the AI usually uses combat roll backwards not to the sides and during the last wave at haven with that elite behemoth Cassandra would get blocked on combat roll by the walls it creates or not use combat roll at all and block it with shield wall. Thing is that thing does a lot of damage and after a few hits she didnt have any more stamina to block so she eventually died before we could kill the behemoth.

Back on topic though I had most of the fun while playing a S/S warrior on hard combat rolling all the time so it's definitely a skill that's worth the 3 points to get.

You forget the utility!

Travel without it: Run... run.... Zzzzz
Travel WITH combat roll: They me rollin, they hatin...

Does the Warrior's combat roll have more range than the Rogue's Evade? Evade's range is kinda meh. So far, fade step is still my favorite evasive maneuver.

I don't get using combat maneuvers to trace faster. Using Evade puts you in combat so you run more slowly. I find spamming Evade and then disengaging from combat doesn't get me moving much faster than just running out of combat.

The trick is to re-use evade at the sweet spot at the end of the animation.

I did testing in Emprise Du Lion /w and without rogue evade.

What took 15 seconds to run took about 12 seconds to roll
What took 20 seconds to run (with one turn) took about 16 seconds to roll

Note that I only took 2 samples per course, so the numbers might be off. Also used my phone timer. Would be great if someone could do more extensive testing. Again, the timing of re-using the skill (atleast with evade) shortens the time some (seemingly).

Warriors 'be rollin'.

Rogues be jumpin'.

Mages be portin'.

It's just awesome!

How useful is the upgrade to the roll?

I think it's decent, but not at the expense of "core" abilities and passives. There aren't many enemy CC effects in the game, but bosses and dragons sometimes have them. I would grab towards late game if you've grabbed all the essential parts of your build.

Curiously, I just got this ability last night for my 2H warrior Inquisitor (just turned level 20 on Hard) and it is awesome! I am kicking myself hard for not getting it earlier. I guess I thought I could live without it until late game. I just finished the quest to "acquire" the Keep in Emprise du Lion. It was an indispensible ability in a few fights in that mission track. It truly changes the way I fight with my Inquisitor. I can't speak to AI characters because I haven't given it to any of my party's warriors.

You may be able to live without it early game, but I suggest you get it prior to mid-game, it makes fights a lot more controllable and easier. Of course, when you take it depends upon you and how good a tactical player you are. I can see it being a lifesaver in the early game Boss fights at Fallow Mire and Haven.

The posters above are absolutely correct, this is a necessary ability on Hard or Nightmare in tougher fights.

I particularly like it in multiplayer and there it's completing for only 4 ability slots...

Roll is a necessity on 2H warriors. I loved it to death on mine.
