This question came up in chat during the course of a game recently.

So you have a Turret specced for Flamethrower at Rank 6. When it flames an enemy, it primes it for a Fire Explosion. All good so far. Now the question part is, what rank is the priming? Is it like ammo priming, rank 1, or is it rank 6 priming as it would seem to be from the placement in the power tree?

All (useful) answers, or pointers to the answers, gratefully received.

couldn't find any indications either in online searches

Peddro doesn't mention the rank of fire explosion produced by Sentry Turret in his tests here. But later in the thread Jack Crapper suggests the best use of the Turret is as a level 6 primer and Peddro doesn't contradict him so maybe that's something.

Thank you for pointing out that link. Would that evidence be classified as "hearsay by omission"? :)

I mean, to me they seem better than level 1, as in Jugg tosses Turret into mookpile, Turret throws flames, Jugg hits mookpile wih Siege Pulse and there's a fairly decent sized FE. But I still wonder if anyone knows for a fact.

As far as I know, powers like the Justicar Bubble or Turret will prime according to their own rank. So a Turret's Flamer should (theoretically) prime at Rank 6, if the Turret is rank 6, much as the Bubble's Warp should prime at Rank 6, if the Bubble is at Rank 6.

But I haven't tested to confirm this, so I'm of limited help.

Why would you think it is not 6? Why would it behave differently from any other powers? The main problem is that the priming window is very small (1s IRCC).

I love my flamer turret as GE but I supplement it with incendiary ammo. So... lots of fire explosion all the time, no clue which ones are from the turret and which ones are from the ammo. Does it really matter if everything is dead? ;)

It could be just Incendiary I, but because it acts like flamer it primes at a faster rate. It still sucks though.

This sounds reasonable. How would one go about testing it?

It's definitely rank 6, because when I used to use my sentry that way, it would always take a couple more bars of armour than the FE's from my weapon.

I spec it for rockets now because the 'turrets priming window is really small, the targeting is inconsistent, and it only primes on armour and health, making it fairly useless against anything but reapers on gold or above. The rockets have more utility IMO.

Well one (fairly major) difference being that most powers prime regardless of what rank they are, whereas the ability to prime with Turret only appears at rank 6. Of course, this could go either way (i.e. turret priming level 6 FE's, or level 1 FE's, at the one rank at which it primes at all).

This.

I've never seen a fire explosion off the flamethrower turret. Ever.

I never take it. A waste.

It works just fine, but you have to be fast. The window between primer and detonation is really small.

I'm not sure a console test would be overly easy, because the flamethrower on Turret doesn't unlock until Rank 6, offering no way to compare the visual size of the Fire Explosion.

It might be possible to do it with the Justicar Bubble, but still tricky.

Someone on PC would probably have to check the actual damage numbers against unmodified Rank 12 Fire Explosions from Peddro's thread.

Much easier for the PC folks of course but you could test it on console - using this Juggernaut on Silver against Reapers.

One second of Flamer from the Turret (71.5 damage) plus a Siege Pulse (720) and a 6+6 fire explosion (562.5) should do just enough damage (1354 in total) to instantly kill a Cannibal (1350 health). If the fire explosion is 1+6 instead then the total damage should be 1185.25 meaning the Cannibal will survive, although I suppose it might be killed by physics damage if it gets ragdolled.

It'll be a week or two before I'm in a position to record again, but if this is still floating around, I'll do it, for...

I've done it with the Juggernaut, but it's tough triggering it regularly. Drop the turret and then Hex Shield right after for the FE. I have no way of calculating the data but it feels like a level 6 based on the damage on Gold. (Keep in mind I have Hex Shield at level 6 as well)

I always assumed it was a lvl 6 primer. Certainly feels that way.

Oh, missed this. Biotic Sphere (with the Warp evolution chosen obviously) does act as a level 6 primer for biotic explosions.

Wait. You're saying Jack suggested something useful... without any sort of innuendo?!!!

Impossible. His account was obviously haxed...

It's level 6 prime. Try with QFE. FE with incinerate does more damage than FE with ammo.

It's a lvl 6 prime, but it doesn't prime reliably. So you would be wise not to rely on it as a primer.

I played a match with the FQE, Juggernaut, Turian Saboteur, and Geth Engineer all with Turrets. So there were quite a few explosions primed by the Turrets.

Also when someone was working on a Device, we basically surrounded him with Turrets. :)
