I'm not actually surprised by this, Bioware developed a beautiful game; expansive, comprehensive, and very entertaining. There's a few things, mainly to do with the later core quest-line, which I wasn't over the moon about, but GOTY for sure. Well-deserved praise to Bioware on this one.

I play the PC version with my X360 controller, very fun gameplay experience, never crashes, and looks fantastic. My sympathies to those getting done by the bugs.

I hear you, Kantr, But is a time to put aside differences of opinion and see the positive aspects of things. Many long hours have been put into this game.  I'm really happy that Bioware wins this Award.

Is "happy" the same as "deserved"?

Shadow of Mordor is a great playpen, for sure, but it's shallow, and bar an oversold Nemesis System, it doesn't do anything Batman didn't do better. 13 hours and I was done. Story was abysmal, I know I'll never finish it. Not GOTY material, but a good game.

Also, drop the passive-aggressive insults and get an education, that phrase doesn’t actually make sense in this context.

I like Inquisition a lot, and approve of the GOTY award. Deal with it.

Your synopsis of shadows of mordor perfectly describes DAI. Just replace, Nemesis System with Open Environments, Batman with The Witcher, and *bam* DAI.

Man, how did an action game win the RPG award? Over a pure gem like Divinity? Man...

Grats bioware but send a thank you note for the devs of the Witcher 3 for postponing the game for next year.

To be fair, DAI is the best game I played recently.
I suppose I still remember ME2 and DAO too well to let them go. I expected Bioware to be more competent than this. Or less...compromised.

Divinity original sin has very good gameplay, but the stories...not so much. It's more enjoyable than DAI though, simply because the game is more coherent and less buggy.

I'll preorder Witcher 3 but heard it would be yet another open world...I'm a bit worried.
And because I find Witcher 1 more charming than 2...friends basically ignore my taste in the series.

That award is just proof the awards are circle-jerk of developers and "critics".

“This is immensely humbling,” said Darrah, “This is really an award that belongs to our fans that stuck with us for a long time."

The rest of that quote reads, "And watched us run a fantastic tactical RPG franchise completely into the ****** ground!" He the flipped off the crowd and told PC gamers to "eat a bag of dicks."

Seriously though, its pretty galling he specifically mentions old school Bioware fans (unless "longtime fans" mean since like 2011) while having completely abandoned their old RPG roots.

Can people please tell me what they abandoned of their RPG roots? They have more dialogue with companioons than Origin had. They have more dialogue choices for your main character than any bioware game outside of Origins, and that was because it was a silent protagonist, something that would immensely take away from a modern RPG. They have the deepest crafting system they have ever had in a game, without a doubt the best CC of the franchise despite the hair and mustaches lacking....

Just because you don't like it means they abandoned old school RPG mechanics. The fact that they didn't stick to DA:O's combat isn't abandoning anything that has to do with RPG. Tactical slow ass combat HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A RPG.

Oh that game was hard if not for other players from the steam forum I could not have finished that game. That game was way harder then DAI and I think DAI is hard so you can imagine the amount the amount of questions I had on that forum.

Education. Now.

Well, the story in DAI was as generic as they get, the gameplay was shallow and repetitive in the extreme. Whether measuring the actual gameplay against action games, actual tactical RPGs, or MMOs (which it most closely resembles) it is worse than any of those. DAO or XCOM both did tactical combat better, The Witcher 2 did the action combat better and more fluidly (or really any action game has done it better than DAI), WoW or GW2 had much more interesting MMO style combat. DAI was overhyped on how big and beautiful and super awesome the environments were. They are, sure. They're also ****** bland. Its just packs of the same 3-5 mobs over, and over, and over, but with a really pretty setting. Oh yay. So please, cram it.

I have criticism for the core quest-line, but Bioware stories, in terms of the plot, are always generic. Mass Effect and Origins are the same story. So by your point, every Bioware game is generic and not worthy of praise. This is a ridiculous stance to have on a game that doesn’t aim to have an original plot.

What Bioware do is characters and lore, and Inquisition is the most comprehensive they've ever done, and in my opinion, the most engaging and varied, i.e. best. Like it or don't, they did what they set out to do, and not only better than everyone else, no one else is really doing it. Bioware are masters of their own craft.

In your opinion, which I already don't care much for--your commentary certainly isn't doing you any favours. I like the game, its good fun to play. Your list of arbitrary slights and baseless comparisons are not things I can take seriously. DAI compares better to Dark Souls, albeit low damage and larger health pools.

XCOM is great, but turn-based, so a sub-genre, and therefore incompatible for comparison.
The Witcher 2 didn't impress me much.

By that definition every game is, but you're being needlessly bitter.
Your exaggerations and barely contained hostility strongly suggest I shouldn't reply again.

There are worse GOTY picks, but DAI got lucky. It's been a dull year for games.

One in a thousand bug for QA becomes a bug a lot of people get.

I've had a bug free experience (aside from banter)

That's funny i have enough banter that you can shake stick at people dont know that there 3 different settings for banter alone default, the n there's banter in parties and  while talking to a person of importance and thern  there's banter option to have it everwhere party towns,  even in alone actions areas ... gues people dont know about it, its  that way on the xbox one pretty sure there the same in  ps4 and pc

Yay congrats! It really deserves it. There are a few bugs I'll admit but no more than any other game launch I've endured and less than some. Over 200 hours into the game and I've yet to encounter anything that would discourage me from continuing (except the voice switch bug but I just worked on my other playthrough instead.) The game is massive, sometimes too massive but it's a great way for people who dig that sort of thing to have it. The story is rich and interesting, set into a lore that I already love and the cast of characters is as always amazingly written. Three dimensional flawed characters will real personalities that immerse you in their world. The friendships feel more genuine this time around too, not just the romances and that makes me happy.

All in all, bugs aside, I feel it deserves game of the year.

I think DA:I is good but I'm not sure its GOTY grade personally..but then again we are dealing with the games of this year...yeah probably.

I guess thats what "Game of the Year" means after all.

Bologna Sandwiches could win "Sandwich of the Year" in a year where there wasn't a single Reuben made I guess.

Congratulations BioWare!  I honestly think you guys deserved it.  I personally think this is a fantastic game, and one I have recommended to others.

You know, I keep hearing that BioWare "betrayed long time fans of RPGs" with this game.  Of course, I heard the same stupid bitter nonsense with Dragon Age 2.  And with Dragon Age (oh, how I remember reading the cries of, "But it's not Baldur's Gate" very well.)  Hell, anytime a new BW game has come out, it's always "not as good as the last game."   I saw folks rip apart DA2 for years until this game came out.  Suddenly, it's the new hotness for many folks.  Ah, nostalgia.

Well, I've been a fan of BioWare games since 1998.  I've played them all except for KotOR and Jade Empire.  I don't feel betrayed; in fact, I've been loving DA:I a lot, flaws and all.  I feel like this was the true sequel to Origins.  I even really enjoyed DA2, but honestly you can skip it and go straight from Origins to DA:I.  I like that.  I like the Easter Eggs and the references.  I like that I feel like my side quests matter in the long run.  I like that I can go through a zone and see the results of my actions.

This is all my opinion, of course, so please do not jump down my throat if you disagree.  I'm not here to convince those that dislike the game to enjoy it.  And those that dislike the game aren't going to change my mind either.  You can tell me until your face is purple that you think the game is bad, and I will agree to disagree.  I've been having way too much fun with the game to let some naysayer get me down.

Here's my question.  How am I supposed to feel betrayed as a 16 year fan of the company?  I keep reading that, and yet, I've seen no reason to feel that way.  At all.

Congratulations for winning: Game of the Year for Dragon Age: Inquisition!  It is your moment for all of your hard work, you folks at Bioware!  For the long hours you all put into this massive, beautiful world , you do deserve this recognition.  I celebrate with you!  Cheers!  :wizard:  :wizard:  :wizard:

Special note: Please keep this topic positive. The game has been in development for about five years.  That is many long hours put into this breathtaking world and with dialogues I enjoy.

Well done Lilacs!

The forum needs people like you and it needs this thread!

I love Bioware and they deserve it for their hard work - no doubt in my mind!

And although I am pretty much grumpy all over the forum - I will keep it strictly positive here.

These two awards are important for Bioware and I am happy about it too. Hopefully more will follow ...

(And thank you for posting the link to the website!)

That's not feedback. That's just announcing who won the award, meaning this could have gone to the Scuttlebutt section where more people can see it... Chill out.

If Lilacs tells Bioware that she is happy about it and other things it is feedback. Get your geek on, will ya?

5 years of development and all we got was this half-arsed behaviors/tactics system and barely functioning tactical view?

this "award" is a joke!

Are you capable of reading and respect? In the very first posting is written:

Seriously, there are enough threads for criticism on this forum. This one is not and you should be thankful for that!

Is "happy" the same as "deserved"?

She is happy. And she is telling here, that she has HOPE! that things will get better. I think Bioware did a shitload of work on this title. And no, it is not perfect. But Lilacs is willing to go the extra mile here. Just for being a fan of Bioware and caring about their work.

She is not asking you to keep the same positive attitude ...

So, enough said -_-

Lilacs, nice thread! Keep up the good work! Bioware will be happy to see this :wizard:

(But man, we need patches, patches, patches... So Bioware, get to it! Will ya ?!)

I am. I read the OPs post, watched the farce of an award ceremony and responded accordingly. Bioware is not deserving of respect at this point and so they will not be treated with it.
