i think the issues with magi are they are so disconnected from mundanes they forget they are both people. And this is coming from a isolationist
Vivienne touches on this...sort of. She talks about how the mages saw the greater restriction on them after Anders blew up Kirkwall. She brings up that there is a huge disconnect between mages and the outside world because they are separated from that world as children. They never saw how magic became more hated than it was when the Imperium was so strong, they never saw how bad it became for them among the people, all they saw was the templars being more and more restrictive.
I think this tied in here as well. Mages had spent so long away from the world that they don't know how to connect with it.
If you ally with the mages, one of them talks to Cassandra and doesn't know how to handle her treating him as equally as she treats everyone else, meaning he had to deal with his own problems like everyone else. I think the dialogue goes something like this.
Mage: We can't work in these conditions.
Cassandra: The templars aren't here to keep you prisoner here.
Mage: We need better quarters, more-
Cassandra: You are here as allies of the Inquisition, you are not our wards. You will have to make do with what you have.
Mage: But how are we supposed to-
Cassandra: Deal with it.
Cassandra: *to Inquisitor* The mages are here as equals. They need to get used to what that means.
