So I recently started playing mass effect for the first time ever, and I've quickly fallen in love with the games and the world it has to offer. While this is off topic to the game themselves, I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with a username for myself that involves the name I use for most online things, being Brahmin but has something Mass Effect related in it, such as Commander Brahmin or Spectre Brahmin. Any help is greatly appreciated as I am quickly becoming a huge fan of this game and would love the help form any of you.

TL;DR

Trying to make a new online username with the name Brahmin but also mass effect related. ex: Commander Brahmin or Spectre Brahmin. etc.

Any ideas?

That's a good one too, if you have any more I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to get a bunch of different options to choose from. Thanks!

You could also use "shifty space brahmin", referencing the 'shifty looking space-cow' from ME1 Ontarom.

Assuming 'Brahmin' means what I think it means.

"Brahmin" is a varna in vedic Hinduism.

"Brahman" is a breed of cattle.

Brahmin also refers to the mutant cows in Fallout 3 (and possibly other Fallout games). My vote remains unchanged.

Unrelated, but - I've always thought about getting into Fallout (probably 3 on) but I have limited time for games. If I love rpgs, and especially a sci-fi type of setting, but I generally hate shooters (the two exceptions being Mass Effect and Halo).

I had been back and forth on whether to check out Fallout or Deus Ex. Leaning towards the latter.

Fallout 3 gameplay has a lot of shooter mechanics and it's not the same sci-fi as Mass Effect and Deus Ex. Still, it's one of my all-time favorite games.

That said, Deus Ex is a very good game too. I think you won't regret playing either.

Having guns does not make game a shooter. Fallout 3 has guns, but it uses the VATS system, making it almost a turn based combat system. Your character has action points that you spend attacking and every time you shoot the game pauses and highlights the different body parts of the target showing the % to hit chance for you to select what you want to do. Whether you hit or not depends on your character's accuracy, not yours.

Doesn't that dramatically slow down the combat to the point it would be grating though?

Well, yeah, but V.A.T.S. is optional. I actually preferred shooting without it. First, because it's range is limited. Second, because it's chance-based

It's a matter of interpretation and taste. I favored VATs because it gives you tactical choice. I also like that it puts back the gun into the hand of the character. RPGs with guns using shooter mechanics are (to me) missing the point, it's a confusion of genre that never ends in favor of the RPG side given the prevalence of the FPS sales and size of the player base. Which is the very reason why their is that compromise in the fit place anyway.

Giving you the various % the game gives you the option to weigh the risks and the tools to build it up as your character grow in experience (many perks interact directly with VATS). It also show you the effectiveness of your strategic choices (run and gun is not as easy as pick your target ) and of various weapons (making weapon upkeep important).

When you're decision is made, risky or safe, then you roll the dice. That's how RPG players do around nearly every RPG tables in the world since D&D. I don't minde chance when you're given so much tools to make your chance.

I agree, it comes to the personal taste. I tried to say that while having guns doesn't make the game a shooter, having V.A.T.S. doesn't make it into a tactical turn-based RPG. Fallout 3 has elements of both and I heard people say that it focused on FPS aspect in FO3, as opposed to tactical turn-based combat of previous installments (haven't played those myself).

Fallout 3 is not a clear-cut shooter but it's combat is not clearly turn-based either. It's a mix of both and whether that mix is good or bad comes down to personal taste in the end.

As for chance-based combat, my problem with it was that I couldn't get 100%. 95% was the most I could reach, even when shooting from point blank range. I get that it's the notion of "everything can happen" but I never missed in those situations without V.A.T.S. On my "pure V.A.T.S." playthrough I did, and combined with the high AP cost of a weapon I used (Microwave Emitter) it was a costly miss.

You'll have to try. The VATS only applies to you, it's transparent for the ennemies (computer do math based decisions fast) and it's a quick enough decision to make on your side. Using it, you quickly learn the % and know pretty much before hand what your chance will be to do a headshot depending on the situation and your skill level. It's also smartly optionnal, you trigger it when you start an action, your choice. So even someone who likes it like me, can forgo using it for lesser ennemies where precision shooting isn't vital.

I also like the way perks interact with it ( http://fallout.wikia...Fallout_3_perks ) a character with gunslinger or commando coupled with sniper and Grim Reaper in the endgame is a walking lawnmower. But if you don't like using it there's plenty of perks not linked to it anyway.

I can see your point, since I heavily favored rifles (hunting, assault, plasma) in all my playthrough so loosing a round once every twenty shots wasn't that much of a trouble. I suggest doing the same for a pure VARs playthroug.

Plus I'm a pen and paper RPG player so I'm used to that kind of uncertainty. 95%, that's like one in a million chance to miss right ? :-)

Not with my luck lol :D I missed one shot in about every 5 V.A.T.S. sequences.

Now I want new Fallout to be announced...

I'm waiting to know more about both Bethesda and Bioware future IPs. I like what both do with their respective franchises (even if I tned to fixate on details I don't like) but completely new universes from both those studios, that's not something we see everyday.

And to get back on topic, I vote for The Illusive Brahmin.
