The voiceacting ain't bad, but it didn't feel like the voice belonged to the character at all.
Ok, we need to talk about Freddie Prinze Jr as Iron Bull

I can't say if I like Iron Bull..since I'm still not that far in the game.....but , everytime he speak ? if I were to imagine anything..it would be Vega ![]()
And stop....
but every time Iron Bull speaks to me, I picture Freddie Prinze standing in front of a mic and making these funny faces to make the voice you hear in-game. It's not convincing at all and makes Iron Bull feel cheap and fake. Freddie,
Maybe then..you can enjoy his voice ![]()

I made the unfortunate mistake of watching the voice preview video with him and had a similar problem as you did: picturing him in front of the mic acting out his role. To contrast, when I watched the Claudia Black and Brian Bloom videos I was already very familiar with how those characters sound. I didn't watch any of the other videos after the Freddie Prinze Jr. one. I'm really into voice work and voice actors and most of the time I see them after admiring their work, but it was the reverse in this situation.
Fortunately I got used to it after talking with Bull repeatedly, but initially it was awkward.
I'm only happy that I remembered half-way through the game that Solas is voiced by Gareth David-Lloyd, who I watched in Torchwood.

Yeah, his voice is pretty inconsistent. But I like to think it's because he's slipping between his two personas as the free leader of a mercenary company and as a loyal follower of the Qun.
That would be really clever if that was it

Really enjoyed Freddie as Iron Bull. More so than his performance as Vega

I really liked The Iron Bull, and knowing that FPJ was behind the voice, and making those hilarious funny faces while pulling some of those line makes me appreciate the character even more.

It's very interesting seeing all the opinions of his performance as Iron Bull. I guess I just wanted to get a realistic perspective from real people and not the over-pressing media coverage of how awesome he is. I got what I asked for, it seems he is very popular. I just can't get those funny faces out of my head with him at the mic. :-P

Loved him, utterly thinks FPJ slays it.
As someone who always felt that Sten was a boring monotone (& Children killing) piece of rock I am forced to take with me cause one of my warden wanted to, it was great to get a Qunari who doesn't sound dull. And don't get me started on the Arishok.
I am totally on board with Kotaku on this, he steals the effing show.

I give props to all the voice cast though. I don't know anything about Iron Bull alone stealing the show, but I did enjoy the character. I would enjoy all of them even more if the banter thing actually worked...

I saw the tone shift as to show that Bull himself has issues maintaining one persona, he doesn't know who he really is and thus even if he does not notice he switches between Bull and Hisran. It works very very well and Freddie did a fantastic job.

Everyone is definitely entitled to an opinion. I think he's awesome as Iron Bull. He's put a few smiles on my face as we've teamed up. He's fun.

The only time I thought Freddie Prinze Jr. was overdoing it was perhaps during the scene where Cassandra's going at him with a stick because it's a Qunari training exercise to conquer your fears.
I say perhaps because it's kinda off-and-on for me. Other then that I liked his voicework for the Iron Bull.

I actually agree with the OP on the forced voice. I don't hate the VA - know little about him since I don't keep up with pop culture - but every time I hear Iron Bull speak, all I can hear is someone forcing a deeper voice in an attempt to sound cool. The result is that it doesn't sound cool.
I guess they wanted a big name actor, but I think I'd rather they found a similar quality actor with a naturally deeper voice, so that when deepening his pitch he didn't sound quite so forced/fake. FPJ would probably sound just fine if he hadn't been actively trying to make his voice super-deep.

No comment on the acting itself, but I don't like his voice very much.

This is more a problem of direction than performance. At times, his voice sounded totally out of place, and at others, his voice sounded perfect. Seems like the VO directors did a poor job and couldn't decide which voice they wanted him to do, or weren't getting a retake if he deviated too much from the desired voice.

I'm forced to agree on this one. Usually Bioware's voice team is just fantastic, all aspects of it, and that does come through with most of DAI as well. The variations in Bull's voicing were noticeable to me on some occasions and it brought me out of the game for a moment when I noticed.

I think his voice varies a little bit in consistency, but I think Bull is supposed to have an unexpected personality for a Qunari. So, Freddie's voice was in tone with that idea. And then there's the sex talk in Haven, which always makes me chuckle

What surgery did he have?
Spinal surgery. He was wearing a neck brace afterwards and is doing fine now.

I like FPJ as a person and he's handsome! He seems like a fantastic human. But I admit I feel the same way as the OP. I like his character well enough and consider him my frat boy party member.
