So I'm in a pickle for my initial play through. I went in wanting to romance Sera but have found myself gravitating more towards Solas. Can anyone give me some feedback of which romance option has the biggest payoff without dropping spoilers (or at least any big ones?)
Sera or Solas?

Hoboy.
Both have great moments. Sera's romance is very down to earth and starts a bit like a whirlwind, but she gradually unwinds around you. While her friendship path is wonderful as well, she shows a bit more depth than usual when in a romance. I may or may not have had moments where I was just plainly smiling like a goof.
I can't say much about Solas' romance without potentially spoiling, so I won't. He has the least amount romance moments out of all the companions, but the ones there are, are sweet and well written. His romance has the most impact.
I personally have a preference for Solas, if only for story reasons, but really, both are very well executed. Go with what would be more natural for your Herald.

I'm going to recommend Solas just because it is your first playthrough and I think you would enjoy the experience a lot more when you get to the end.

Solas
Reason #1: He's not insane
Reason #2: You don't have to abandon your elvish heritage for him
Reason #3: Ironic, spoilery Reasons.

Thanks for all the feedback. But it would seem that I fudged up and can no longer romance either of them after a certain choice I made in the story. The romance option for Sera has disappeared and I never got one for Solas, maybe I didn't flirt with him enough? I'm on the final mission now. Or at least that is the next one for me to tackle. I am gonna continue with the war table missions in hopes of unlocking favor earning quests for the both of them. I find myself really torn between the two still but am now leaning more towards Solas because I still have a mind to become Keeper of a tribe one day...especially now that I am more knowledgeable in elven lore than most xD

Being an elf would make it hard to romance Sera, you get little towards the romance when you flirt with her as an elf. I would go for Solas. If you want to romance Sera it is best to be a Qunari, they get a x2 bonus towards flirts for her. Humans and Dwarfs get a slightly higher bonus as well, not as high as Qunari but higher than Elf.
I have a human character for going after Sera.

If you really like elven lore, or are playing a character who will be very into elven lore, go Solas, it's very elven lore heavy AND it's actually hard to keep a relationship with Sera if you seek/believe elven lore (though that in itself has some good storytellying drama). I'm actually romancing Sera on my "side with the Templars" Templar, and Solas on my "side with the mages." knight enchanter.

Solas had more emotion and depth in my opinion.

I was in a similar pickle as you, OP. I kept bouncing between wanting to romance Sera or Solas with my elf mage. I eventually decided to go for Solas since, for RP purposes, he's the professor of the group and he knows magic lore beyond what the Chantry allows and even what the Dalish teach. My mage is fatalistically hungry for knowledge (honestly, she's about as bad as Merrill) and she just eats everything that Solas throws at her.
Plus, I've heard enough spoilery stuff about his storyline that I want to experience it for myself.

Definitely Solas, but be aware that if you're playing a proud Dalish elf you're gonna have a bad time with both Solas and Sera (my first run through has SOlas hating my guts and I ended up kicking Sera out). But ultimately I think Solas' is better since Sera is too manic, too explosive. She's a barrel of gunpowder and will get violent the second specific things are questioned, with no intention of talking it out or even considering.
Solas is more flexible, and can more easily adapt to changes and such. Plus, I think his character is overall just more interesting given his role in the story.

Well, your inquisitor is elf. So i'd say Solas.
Sera goes well better with other races, esp Qunari.

Romancing Sera with an elf means wanting to destroy your own character background. For some can be a good run, but for some, like me, who love elven lore, is quite traumatic and kill roleplay, since she give a very hard ultimatum. (I still have problem after my first run with an elf being even just friendly with Sera. I'm totally not into her character. Can't like her much.)
Solas is quite hard on Dalish view as well, but he is much more understanding and as long as the Inquisitor keep an open mind about stuff without fall out on the stubborness and arrogance of the Dalish view, he doesn't care if Lavellan is very Dalish oriented. (he ask the Inquiz something very important for her Dalish heritage, but whatever the answer, he won't be angry.)
Of course, the Solas romance have less content than the others romance and is quite sad, but have a big role on the story, while Sera's romance is cute and funny.
