I am sick of Biowares games that do this

I think I have totally wasted money on this dumb game. This game is boring. There is way too much gabbing, not enough playing, and on top of that hardly any of the stuff you can do is explained. I read the usuer manual to this game at least 13 times over and over even triple read certain parts...

I still cannot grasp more than 3/4's of this game

For example all this needs a huge explanation:

________________________________________________________________________________________

This screen is 100% useless and un-needed:

What does all this mean why do I care about the enemies health I can see it on the screen this
Posted Image

Someone needs to provide a really good explanation as to why anyone would ever need this screen or the information in it...it's a complete and utter waste of programming space.

________________________________________________________________________________________

There has been so far absolutely no use for this screen I have found yet. So again this is just another completely useless screen, Why would I ever care about the condition of a target, who cares. It doesn't do anything for game play.

Again another completely useless screen.

So far nothing in this game has warants any of these screens..

I have gotten along perfectly fine without them.

On top of that there is no explanation on how you use them that I can understand...

You think the Tactics screen is useless? Are you aware of the depth you can control your AI companions with this?

Throwing around the term 'useless' for something you can't be bothered to look into is a bit shallow.

You say there is too much 'gabbing'? Did you even read what this game is supposed to be about? It isn't about the action, its about being an in depth RPG experience.. so yes, there is alot of 'gabbing'. Read the 'gabbing' sometime, maybe it will get you into the world.

All of the basics of the game are explained -either in the manual, or in the tutorial pop-ups during your Origin story. In fact, the Tactics screen is explained in a tutorial.

It sounds like this game just isn't for you - probably doing some research before buying would have helped you choose whether or not it would be for you, but you didn't do that.

People have been waiting for this 'dumb' game for many years, and we have been waiting for BioWare to get back to its roots for much longer. You have to take any pre-conceived notions about what a BioWare game should be and throw them out the window, play this game for what it is - not for what you thought it should be.

You can easily say that the game isn't for you without resorting to calling it 'dumb', or saying that an integral part of the game is 'useless waste of programming'.

Owch thanks for making this thread I've bookmarked it so that any responses as to what these screens are for will assist me when it arrives!

Haven't you read about the tactics? When the condition on the left is met, the character will do the action on the right. (When you're not controlling them)

It's just a way to make your own AI for you followers.

did you even read the forums or spend time researching the game? Cause your response is stupid if you did....

Addendum: to go more into depth about those screens -

The tactics menu allows you to fine tune the AI of your companions (or yourself when not in your control). The various options set conditions for when certain actions should be taken - For example: You can set it so that if a Target is using melee against that character, to change to melee weapons (in a ranged build for instance). You can use it to tell healers to cast healing spells on the party when HP gets to a certain point.

Instead of having generic AI scripts like older RPG games, you have the ability to customize what your AI companions do.. and when they do it.

1. That looks like your tactics screen. It is what you use to set your party member's AI to take certain actions at certain times... such as "When an enemy's health is at 100% use a certain spell".

2. Uhhh, same thing, I think.

3. Again, same thing.

The first time I open the tactics screen it showed me a tutorial... not sure if it didn't show you the tutorial or if you just didn't read it. And if you did read the manual 13 times as you say you probably saw the part that said most of the stuff in it is explained in game in much greater detail.

Not to be rude, but if you are having this much trouble understanding the tactics system, I suggest you start over and pay attention to the tutorial as you play.

Those aren't different "screen" they're individual AI options in the Tactics screen. If the concept of assigning AI options to the characters is too complicated for you, you may want to stick to simpler games.

For example, the health option is useful for assigning to high damage attacks. Tell the character to only use high damage attacks when the enemy they are attacking is above a certain percentage health so as to not waste the cooldown, when it could have saved it for the next opponent instead.

The presets are often worthless, though, such as setting Shield Bash to be on a health conditional rather than leaving it to player descretion or tying it to how many enemies the character is surrounded by, or whether the character's target is attacking one of the other party members (always a useful thing for your shield wearing character to be busy taking care of).

What annoys me personally is there aren't *more* options, especially more behavior options with the same granularity as the "Tactics" options. It's lovely to have these nice drop down lists for using abilities... where's my choice to set a ranged character to initiate combat when I do, switch to melee when attacked but not surrounded... and then run away after using an ability that roots, rather than just standing there (I'm aware of the "Ranged" behavior option, for instance, but it's frequently hit and miss for achieving certain results and requires the sort of micro managing that tactics seems designed to help avoid)? The tactics portion offers this sort of granularity, but the "Behavior" dropdown offers nothing like it... the basic options result in movement based behavior often at odds with the tactics assigned, or simple sense even.

*You walk by and notice a small creature in a cage, he is thoughtfully outlining his next forum post, while snickering to himself.

You see a sign next to the cage, you walk closer to read it, and it says:

Yes I do, because I have yet to use it?
Throwing around the term 'useless' for something you can't be bothered to look into is a bit shallow.
I'm not throw the term around, I gave a 100% perfectly legit explanation on why it's useless, I have yet to have any explain what's so great about it
You say there is too much 'gabbing'? Did you even read what this game is supposed to be about? It isn't about the action, its about being an in depth RPG experience.. so yes, there is alot of 'gabbing'. Read the 'gabbing' sometime, maybe it will get you into the world.
You obviously have no concept about what an IN DEPTH RPG is, there is a difference between in depth, and interupting game play with totally annoying nonsense.
All of the basics of the game are explained -either in the manual, or in the tutorial pop-ups during your Origin story. In fact, the Tactics screen is explained in a tutorial.
Are you on glue? The tutorial explains how to bring up the tactics screen....yeah WHO CARES....No explanations abouot what eevry single option in it is used for...try getting your facts straight before you go around trying to second guess what i say
It sounds like this game just isn't for you - probably doing some research before buying would have helped you choose whether or not it would be for you, but you didn't do that.
Typical lame - ass comment that gets said by people who do not grasp why people like me say games like this are totally ******-poorly designed on explanations.

This is exactly my point, they spend all this time on making nonsese gabbing, yapping, and flapping of the gums, no in depth instructions as to what every single thing in every menu is used ofr.
You can easily say that the game isn't for you without resorting to calling it 'dumb', or saying that an integral part of the game is 'useless waste of programming'.
Look I don't need to spend an hour reading dialog in the castle at the beginning only to tell me the brother is going to war and you are to stay behind.

I just explained 1 hour of useless dialog into one sentence.

You really are not too swift are you.

I paid for the game then I expect every single option in every single drop down box, and every single thing in the interface broken down step by step.

The use for those screens is so that you can control the way your companions, or your character acts in combat when not being controlled directly by you.

Your first screen shot and complaint, about why should you care about a creatures health. That is not what it is for, really, with it if you have it set to >50% the companion you set this on, will attack any creature with less than half of its health remaning. On the right side of that, you would select for the action you want that companion to perform, you'd select attack on the right hand side across from that rule. Think of it something kin to setting message rules in e-mail programs, such as moving a message with a specific heading/from etc into another folder.

As for your second question and screen shot: You should care what the condition of a target is when setting up what your companion will do as far as tactics go, because conditions such as being knocked to the ground, paralyzed and other such things can make them easier to hit. (at least if it works the same way as in most games) It will give you a chance to use a skill that does high damage to finish the creature off faster than you would be able to if it were standing and attacking you.

Your third and final screenshot: Shows use an ability. What that means is, when the condition to the left is met. (such as any creature is seen) then you could set what ability you want the companion to use when they first spot a creature and begin to engage it.. Such as pinning fire, if you have that ability with the bow/crossbow, or having your mage cast weakness, arcane bolt, lightning, and any other skills that are activated.

Overall, the tactics screens and those things listed there, are there to help you have your companions act the way you want them to act while in combat and perhaps make things a little easier for you, rather than having to do it all manually yourself, unless you want to do it all your self and don't care that your companions will not do things such as heal themselves, etc, without you telling them to.

I hope this helps explain some and hope you can understand what it is all about.
