Believe me I know many people on here chose human, but I'm talking more about the majority casual players, we're just a vocal minority. It's more of a feeling/opinion, I could be wrong, except about majority human

Fair enough. I don't actually mean to direct that all on you. More like venting. Sorry. I'm just starting to notice comments lately that it made it seems like a noob choice or something. You could have a point though. That the vast majority go with what's familiar.

No problem, I know a lot of fans of DA choose human for a more immersive story, even I did that in origins but I like something different every now and then

Play a Rogue Assassin and they deal heaps of damage Death Mark ftw :P if you time it right big time damage on boss fights.

I quit because my humans were butt ugly. Heh (I eventually got better at it). So I liked Dalish and City Elf the most. I planned on elf here, but it sounds like female is the better choice. You get two cool  fellow elf hookups with Solas and Sera.

I take it you've been called boring for picking boring humans, you boring human? :P

Seriously though, to each their own.
I like playing my rogues as nominal heroes and unrepentant scoundrels, so human and elf were off the table for me.

Not directly, but it still annoys me :D

That kind of complaint makes sense, in say... WoW. I remember seeing it there often. Because it's one of those fantasy settings where humans are in fact generic. But not so with Dragon Age. There's an angle to it that's almost like historical fiction, where every nation is unique. They also give us the added roleplaying benefit of families and such. So there's even more specific parameters to play with.

The various human nations are interesting, I just like playing criminals lol.

The Qunari and Dwarf origins allowed me to RP the self interested criminals I like, so I prefer them.

I like it sometimes. I played Hawke that way, but I had no choice on race, of course.

Very torn on who my favorite Warden is. Probably female City Elf. I like that she already has her mother as an example. I like the little story you can tell the kids in the beginning about "Tathas" the clever rogue. I see my Warden just living out her life as the real Tathas.

Rogues are the least played class, Mages and Warriors neck and neck.

Males more common than Females

Humans > Elves > Qunari > Dwarves. Humans make up the super majority of the races (meaning over 50%) I'd guess 60-80% human with >5% between Elves and Qunari and Qunari and Dwarves.

For the social player base aka people on BSN, Reddit other fansites etc.

Mages most popular class

Males still surpass females but it's within 10%

Humans and Elves make up ~60% of the characters with Qunari taking ~13% and Dwarves 7%

That's my guesses, I honestly think that Dwarves are going to struggle a bit more until we find a way to make up for the lack of mages (I seriously think that is the differential between them and a healthy number) but, I can't see them going anywear. Qunari are here to stay as they've already made solid ground despite some rather.... severe challenges with their implementation in the game, I can see them going neck and neck with Elves without Vitaar and more hair options.

The best thing they could do for dwarves is make a dwarf centric game. Where you have to be a dwarf. Kind of like the hobbit.. but with more crime or something. Make it like Good Fellas, but with Dwarves. People would dig it. I swear.

I agree that female dwarf rogue or warrior is probably last.  But I do remember seeing an informal poll online somewhere that had elf warrior really, really low as well.

And, of course, basic players probably chose the basic male human warrior combo.  You're basic.

If it helps, I'm actually not human in real life. I just like playing as one of you.

Why does it matter if few people play Dwarves? Bioware has already said they won't let the opinion of the majority determine player choice.

Also my canon Warden is an Aeducan.

I do not really think one's race/class combination says anything interesting about them. However, while "humanity" in Dragon Age may not be generic, 100% of human player characters are Anglophone* nobility or not far removed from it. That's a little generic, come on. Okay, I guess I don't know about the Orlesian Warden. Nor do I care.

-

It would not surprise me if people rarely played warrior elves. I don't know if this is a fiction my mind has invented, but I think most elves in Origins were mages and/or most mages, elves. So, again, I don't know if that's complete bullshit, but at the same time, I am willing to confirm that it's true. You can attribute this fact to a dev of your choosing.

*don't give me any nonsense about how they're not speaking English; they're speaking "the Dwarven trade language." Life's too short. Languages in Thedas include Qunlat, Elven, French, English, and English with an assortment of vaguely Mediterranean Latin accents.

I have Dalish warrior in DAO. Bioware's Default is also a Dalish warrior, I see. Pretty cool. Then there's Fenris. They can definitely fit the archetype, if people make the effort.

I don't care about the Anglophone angle of many human options. I'll never get anything approximating myself, so whatever (I'm half Danish and Thai btw.. 6'5" Asian looking). I just appreciate it from an RP perspective.

And this makes me very, very happy.

I'll be honest, if they had decided to go with human protagonists only for DA: I, I probably would have done a single playthrough (maybe two) like DA 2 and then moved on.  The forced set human PC in DA 2 will always make that game last place in my mind and it's one of the reasons why I have no attachment to Hawke

Spoiler

I hate playing humans if I don't have to.  I had a single human noble warrior in DA: O, only because everyone said it was the most authentic feeling story, and I hated every second of it.  I did one mage playthrough and did a human for that as well (because I'm also not interested in elves).  Outside of that, I did about 12 playthroughs of DA: O with dwarven Wardens.  So far, in DA: I, I've created three solid PCs who will definitely get played all the way to the endgame.  It's two dwarves and a qunari.  And I have two more qunari and dwarf planned.  I don't think I'll ever even put a human or elf out of the CC.

I hope beyond hope that they continue to allow us to play as dwarves and qunari in the series.  It's one of the things that makes DA so enjoyable to me.  (And, I'm also crossing my fingers that they will let us play as other species in ME4, but I think that one's a pipe dream.....)

There is a poll floating around here somewhere, male and female dwarf are the lowest on it, not that it speaks for the entire fanbase haha. (It didn't ask about class)

That's a shame. Hawke is a pretty flexible character. He/she is a person. Not just a human. :) The game has some funny variations worth replay.

Good! I wasn't a fan of them in Origins, mainly because the attitudes of Orzammar annoy me so much that I wouldn't put my protagonist through it. I have been enjoying playing as a rogue dwarf in DAI though.

I just can't get into it.  I did a serious, diplomat male warrior Hawke on my first playthrough.  Meh.

Then I did a sarcastic male mage Hawke on my second playthrough.  Less meh, but still not nearly as interesting as my Warden or Inquisitor.  I think that the mage Hawke romancing Anders is probably the "best" story, but I just don't care and can't get into it.  It felt a bit like I was playing a buffoon who was just bumbling his way through the events.

Perhaps if I did a serious, diplomat mage Hawke, it would be more interesting, but frankly, I just don't care enough to bring myself to do it.  While I loved Aveline, Isabela, and Varric (and Carver, to be honest), I kind of disliked the rest of the companions.  I am completely neutral on both of the male LI's, too.  There's just not enough in that game to make me want to play again.

I tried to run a female rogue Hawke and she didn't even make it out of Act I.

I'm also an dirty human player.

In DAO, I had a male human rogue and a male human mage. (The combat in DAO is just not enjoyable to me, so it kept me from playing it as much as the later games.)

In DA2, I had no problem with Hawke always being human, obviously. I had probably had eight or nine of them in both genders and all three classes.

I played those games more or less in a bubble and never really gave my humanism a second thought. I got more into the "fandom" while waiting for DAI and I thought I had seen the light. I told myself I wanted to experience everything and that I was going to have a character from each race.

Well, here I sit with my first four characters:

-Completed male human archer rogue

-Completed male human mage

-In progress female human warrior

-In progress male human dagger rogue

I just cannot get myself on the other races train no matter what I do, so I guess I'll just embrace it.
