Orlesian Ball Outfit/Uniform

Also- I agree with what others said above. They don't match anything else. They looked horrendously out of place. For everyone saying: "but you can't fight in big skirts" - you change into your armor for the fighting parts anyway!

What I didn't like was that Orlesian flirting girl by the entrance of the ball room saying my Inquisitor was not attractive ("poor man").

I'm guessing the lack of dresses wearable by player characters might have something to do with the difficulty of animating a poofy dress for all the possible movements available to playable characters... yeah, you can put your armor back on in the fighting sequences, but you don't have to. You can keep your formal outfit on. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those animations - even just the normal running animation - looked really weird with that dress model.

I liked it, my Inquisitor looked great.
I find her more of a person who loves dresses, so I was disappointed when you couldn't get one. However, since the IQ is the face of the Inquisition, a more military outfit is probably expected.

I'm not sure why some people feel like Orlais breaks their 'immersion' when Orlais has been hinted at being incredibly extravagant as far back as DA:O. Fereldan is a fairly simple place, sure, but that's due to simplicity being ingrained into the nation's culture. Orlais, on the other hand, is immensely powerful, wealthy and has a greater emphasis upon culture, art and general extravagance. Antiva is likely somewhat similar in that regard based on how it's described.

(sorry if this isn't the right place for this, but the description for the subforum seems to indicate that it's alright)
So, how about that outfit you and your fellows wear during the ball? I've seen people complain that they don't like that the women wear the same thing as the men, and how they want a ball gown mod. Thoughts?
Me, I love it, and I'd love to wear it. Problem being, there's no time that I'd ever be able to wear it other than at Comic Con, but even then I don't think I could do it because I'm pretty certain I can't make one and buying one would be super expensive (should anyone ever do that).
Also, I'm sad that I haven't been able to find any full body back/front images of it. (any help there would be appreciated)
Discuss.
I love it too, for males and females. I don't think a ball gown would be as appropriate, given the circumstances. We're there representing the inquisition and it's essentially a very fancy uniform that we're all wearing. Actually, it's the only clothing in the whole game that I really liked. The DA2/inquisition styles make my eyes hurt as I find them ungainly and badly proportioned.

I was very disappointed in the formal attire because I was DYING to have the option to choose what to wear, especially if that included a beautiful gown. You get to change your clothes when you go fight so I don't see how having a dress would've been a limitation.

initially I was a bit put off by everyone wearing the same red outfit. Then I really thought about it. It made a statement that everyone in the Inquisition were on the same page in spirit and the uniform represented that. In a game of politics, politicians would look at ways to split a group to find any kind of leverage. The uniforms made a statement to the ball that they were untouchable from the game of politics.
With that said, we should have an option to say we like the idea or not. With Josephine chiding the Inquisitor if she/he dislikes the outfits and explaining the reason for everyone to wear it.

Hated them personally. Not as bad on the men but terribly awkward looking on the females in the group. Including my inquisitor.

You and your companions aren't supposed to look llike anyone else. That's the whole point. You are the inquisition.

Your companions are part of the Inquisition, but you're supposed to be the leader of the Inquisition. If it were a real life situation, the Inquisitor probably would have been wearing at least a more embellished version of the dress uniform, if not a unique Orlesian style dress/suit, to make them stand out more. But it's a video game, and like others have said, the most likely reason for everyone wearing the exact same thing was to save time on animations and the like, which is completely understandable.

What I really don't understand is Vivienne; she's a grand player of the game, so why is she bare-faced and wearing a military uniform? Every time we got into combat she'd change into the tier 3 armor I gave her and I can't help but think 'That looks better for this party than the dress uniform!'. Likewise Josephine is the diplomat of the Inquisition and one of the official 'faces' of it since she's the one who makes the treaties and negotiations so wouldn't wearing an Orlais dress or Antivan fashions fit better? She's not supposed to be fighting or representing the military.

Because they where there representing the Inquisition, not themselves. And as the dress uniform of the Inquisition, it's just that a uniform. The Inquisition is a flux-military organisation, an army without a state as it where. You don't expect a to see a lieutenant colonel turn up to a formal event in a dress. No she wears the same dress uniform as everyone else, just with more shines on it.
You do make a fair point.

everyone is wearing the same and not wearing masks (which is scandalous in Olaris so I am wondering why Vivienne and Leiliana and Josie would made those mistakes). So it is kind of weird.
I was hoping that it can be dress for the female and my dalish elf cannot dance to save her life. but im rather surprise that her race does not matter and she dance better than Cullen.
If I recall correctly, only nobility wear the masks.

That woulld have annoyed me for my inquisitor as much as you folks are annoyed with the unifirm, lol. A poofy dress on my female inquisitor would have made me livid. I'm thinking they they picked the safest way possible without spending resorces on a closet full of choices.

But yeah, having them tailored to each character would've been nice

I was extremely glad that the game does NOT force gender-segregated outfits on the player in this scene or elsewhere because I hate that with the passion of a thousand suns. It's one reason why I couldn't stomach sticking to Guild Wars 2.
The outfit itself is okay, I do very much like the sort of understated, practical military-style nature of it though it does feel a bit anachronistic (as silly as that term can be in reference to a fantasy setting). While I agree with Cassandra that formal armor would have been better, that was likely not permitted. My only problem with it is that I while I think it's meant to be understated, its bold colours actually end up standing out quite starkly from the utterly colourless same-y outfits worn by the NPC nobles. It should be the other way round, IMO -- garish, outrageous stuff on the nobles and plainer garb on us.
I also like the fact that the Inquisitor doesn't wear anything special to set her apart from her "underlings". That, too, gives the impression of confidence through understatement -- we don't need to show off. We expect people to know who and what we are just from our face, our name, our stance. Should anyone be confused as to who among our bunch is the Inquisitor -- well, let the social stigma of ignorance fall on them. That sort of thing could likely be deadly in "the Game". It also presents a uniquely united front in this cesspit of backstabbing egomaniacs.

The NPCs agree it doesn't look nice on women. In my game, the NPC women say disdainfully, "What on earth is Lady Pentaghast is wearing?"
They're just trying to demean Cassandra.

Personally, I didn't mind my Inquisitor wearing the ball uniform. Inquisition is a military organisation after all, and my Quizzy was there on official business. Besides, the colours were quite becoming for my canon blonde Quizzy ![]()
All in all, I'm not against the uniform, I just wish we could have customized it a bit to our liking - change colour, materials, choose furnishings or mask that would go with the uniform.
What I don't understand is why people complain about the uniforms but they seem comfortable with the terrible animation? I would wear anything to the Ball (including the Skyhold PJ's), if only I could have feminine animations. Looking at my Inquisitor dancing with Florianne makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

I actually kind of liked it, it really fit both my female dwarf and my female elf (in different manners), and I felt it was appropriate for them to dress like that, the Inquisition should look united. Plus, it makes them seem like they are part of a military organization, which really suits me.
It bothers me people label this outfit as masculine, it really didn't bother me my female Inquisitors wore that.

@Lady_Artifice: Indeed. And I think she would agree with me that sneers from this crowd count as a compliment.
Personal bias speaking: no amount of frills and paint and glitter could make these vapid, vain wretches into anywhere near a match for Cassandra. Even covered in gore and sweat in the middle of a battlefield, she will always be so much more striking in body and soul than an army of posturing gasbags could ever hope to be.

If female inq gets extra sexy options, then male inq should too. It would be crap if female gets a gown or whatnot (sexy, elegant, etc) and male is stuck with the sack of potatoes outfit.
As long as they're equal, it's all good for me.

I wanted a gown. I think it wouldn't be that unrealistic - recolored Morrigan's/Anora's dress would work fine, and we are using our battle outfits during the battle sequences, anyhow. I just wanted my female inquisitor to feel beautiful, and now I only have fanfic for that.
Also the dance plot. It was great, I liked the approval boost, but I felt it catered to the male inquisitor too much. Honestly, I almost wish I could get the same dance/line with Gaspard or someone else as a female inquisitor. I think that would've been great.

The dance was badass -- every bit as much of a battle as those where we press keys to make silly numbers float across the screen, but utterly unique. Here we are, an outsider (even as a human noble) whom some may think of as god-touched, others may fear as a new powerhouse, but many others simply look down on as an upstart wannabe who cannot possibly match the Orlesian court in grace and wits. Along comes Florianne, a master of the "Game", and she thinks she has us ... but every blow is deflected, each move countered, words as poised and assured as the physical steps of the dance. The crowd's eyes are on us, the dance floor is ours alone in the end, and they are impressed. A bit unrealistic and too easy, maybe, but still very enjoyable. Taking the lead in that dance felt symbolic of taking charge of the situation at large.
Then a bit later we're back on that floor for another even more impressive show to bring her scheme crashing down, all the while stalking around her like a predator circling its increasingly frightened prey. These two scenes combined are so well-done and brought a huge grin to my face despite the fact that I'd normally run screaming from fancy parties and other poncy noble stuff.

The outfit clashed outragously with my Lord Trevelyan's red hair. Which I really liked, for him it's a statement. Screw Orlais. The Inquisition does not indulge in this senseless folly called the Game.
And no way my elf lass would have worn a dress when she was there to stop an assassination plot which probably includes sneaking around and fighting.
Regarding Vivienne, at first I thought it unfitting that she wore the uniform and not one of her usual fancy dresses, and no mask at that, but she is there as part of the Inquisition after all. A different attire would have sent the wrong message.

I really wanted to wear a ball gown but I ended up liking the uniform for the united front it presented to the Orlesians. That it doesn't quite fit the setting is a bonus the Inquisition isn't trying to fit in it's establishing itself as the new power to be reckoned with in Thedas.
I think there's a separation of game play and in world going on when it comes to combat. We do get to change into our armour and equip weapons but in universe I think the uniform was designed so that the people going to the Winter Palace could fight in it if they had to. They had no weapons the mages cast spells without a staff and everyone else stole theirs from the enemy.
