my biggest annoyance was that I would forget to switch back to armor and weapons...and then get my ass kicked.  We get the recipe to make the outfit after why the hell couldn't I make it before then and have one I could actually fight in and wander the party

I would have loved to have the schematic before the party.  Then I could make it as pretty or as ridiculous as I want.  Then I'd take screenies of all of us in yellow plaid or something.

Personally, I didn't mind my Inquisitor wearing the ball uniform. Inquisition is a military organisation after all, and my Quizzy was there on official business. Besides, the colours were quite becoming for my canon blonde Quizzy ^_^
All in all, I'm not against the uniform, I just wish we could have customized it a bit to our liking - change colour, materials, choose furnishings or mask that would go with the uniform.

What I don't understand is why people complain about the uniforms but they seem comfortable with the terrible animation? I would wear anything to the Ball (including the Skyhold PJ's), if only I could have feminine animations. Looking at my Inquisitor dancing with Florianne makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

What, you think you should let Florianne lead? I think not, ;) Honestly, the only way I can play a female is to control a male npc except for the cutscenes. The attempts at demonstrating 'femininity' drive me that crazy. Please, no more, for the love of god, no more...

The uniform reminded me, as I have said in various other threads, a Disney Prince Charming ripoff uniform. I would have loved there to have been a cut scene before the ball deciding clothing. I could totally see Vivienne/Leliana arguing with someone about choice in clothing with the Inquisitor coming in to make the final decision. This would allow people to have a choice to wear that horrid outfit or something that actually looks Orlesian. I would have loved wearing a dress. Using combat as an excuse makes no sense since you have to switch to armor ANYWAY. If I'm not fighting then let me wear a frilly dress. I want to wear a dress that puts every other dress to shame. I'm the hero, I should be the star of the show :P.

Or at the very least an outfit that doesn't look frumpy.

It's a shame there's no option to wear it around Skyhold. It doesn't suit everyone, but it would be a nice change from the beige outfit.

I wish we could just have options. I wouldn't want to be forced to wear a dress, but I would have really liked to wear one.

The female Inquisitor yet again wears men's clothes...tsc,tsc...

It's MotA all over again. Maker...

Some of us just want to be pretty. ;3;

It's a dress uniform, isn't it? An 'official' one for the Inquisition? Why's it so... bland? I mean, shouldn't the Inquisition's symbol be on it somewhere?

The Dragon Age wiki now has an article on the outfit titled Formal Attire:

The problem with a gown is that you have to fight a lot during parts of the quest. I wouldn't mind something a tad more formal or feminine but a full gown seems a bit unrealistic.

Really, that is the part you find unrealistic?

Inquisitor comes back blood soaked and sweating from fighting, she might as well change back into a dress and not the formal wear.

It's okay, I don't hate it but I really wanted to wear a dress. On Gaider's tumblr he said they originally planed for a pick your outfit type deal but it got cut. Maybe we will see that in future dlc.

I'm actually okay with wearing dresses and coats for the party, considering that they are made a certain way, or heavily customized. Assuming that the dress skirt only has one layer, the only reason why they're impractical for fighting is because it doesn't give much leg room for a dress -- tangling and tripping and all, but if the cloth used is light enough or if there's no petticoat or wire frame or fancy dress mechanism to worry about and the skirt is sewn in a way that it kept away from the legs, it seems suitable, especially if the skirt length is long enough to pass as a gown but not enough to trip you once every five minutes, and probably easy to pull out of the way, or maybe it has a slit somewhere and there's just pants underneath. Also, some boots. It's gonna be awful climbing that trellis with a skirt, but it's a lot more awful climbing that thing with heels.

(Or, the ladies can just do the loining-gird thing with their skirts. You know, bringing the skirt up and between and around their thighs and knotting them. Whatever works, I guess? ;; )

For the warriors/rogues, they could wear armored coats or corsets or whatever, or they could probably have mail underneath their coats. Which reminds me of the Game of Thrones TV show-- Cersei usually wears this type of armored dress often (a metal corset, some plates here and there), and during a... certain event, the Freys had chainmail under their robes which can only be seen when you pull the sleeve up. Of course, it should look a lot less bulky than a full armor set so you can dance with it, so it's more on the material and its strength even though it's malleable. It's hard to find metals like those, cause malleable metals are the jewelry ones (gold and silver) or the basic ores (iron), so it's probably enchanted. Makes sense.

I'm kind of concerned for the clothes because, well, it doesn't really make sense to me. How long do they actually take before they get dressed back to their normal armor, fight some people, then get back to their formal attire and hide their weapons and clothes in some accessible place and return to the ballroom? Too long. But if you compare that to the time they actually had custom-made gowns and coats, snuck out, killed the baddies and went back... they'd saved a lot of time, and probably worried less about 'omg where the hell do we hide our clothes and weapons without it being too suspicious??? and where do we dress without it being awkward and suspicious??'

Yyyyyes, to me, it didn't make sense in context. But I'm okay with switching back to my regular armor to fight then dressing back to formal attire once the killing's all done, game-wise, cause... well, you can get dressed in a second there, cause it's a game. ;;;; Not to mention that it does solve the problem when you got some blood on your coat...

Just my two cents, though! Of course, I've never worn those style of dresses before, but if Morrigan kind of went against Orlesian fashion while still fitting in and still capable of fighting, and our dear Inquisition party went in nutcracker cosplays...

All this explaining just because I want to see female inquisitors kicking ass in a dress. Doesn't even matter which class. Oh my.

It is a 19th century uniform and has a WW2 ammopack in the back. In case you have to shoot your way out.

What the heck happened to Dragon Age?

initially I was a bit put off by everyone wearing the same red outfit.  Then I really thought about it.  It made a statement that everyone in the Inquisition were on the same page in spirit and the uniform represented that.  In a game of politics, politicians would look at ways to split a group to find any kind of leverage.  The uniforms made a statement to the ball that they were untouchable from the game of politics.

With that said, we should have an option to say we like the idea or not.  With Josephine chiding the Inquisitor if she/he dislikes the outfits and explaining the reason for everyone to wear it.

Agreed. This is why I loved the dress uniform. In Orlais, where frippery and excess are commonplace, the real way to make a statement is to be different. The Inquisition is not Orlesian, so why should they have to play by Orlesian rules? They are an outsider faction, and the uniforms reflect that. It would've felt awkward for my Inquisitor to wear your standard Orlesian ballgown. Plus, have you seen the skirts on those things? That must be hell to get around in, combat or no.

It helps that my Inquisitor looked quite dashing in it. I can see how she was able to take the court by storm.

Spoiler

Also the dance plot. It was great, I liked the approval boost, but I felt it catered to the male inquisitor too much. Honestly, I almost wish I could get the same dance/line with Gaspard or someone else as a female inquisitor. I think that would've been great.

Usually I'm very sensitive to situations that seem to favour a male PC over a female, but honestly I didn't get that from the dance scene at all. The dance itself was Florianne trying to maneuver you into screwing up in front of the entire court. It was a calculated political move. It makes total sense that she'd ask to dance with the Inquisitor, no matter what gender they were. Plus, I got the impression that two women dancing together wasn't a big deal in Orlais. Never took the "two women dancing?" option, so I have no idea what the Inquisitor or Florianne says if you bring it up, but I didn't even feel the need to question it. It all felt very natural, and was a fun way to engage in some verbal sparring with the villain.

Those goddamned pink bows on every Orlesian gown. It just cheapens the outfit!

I can deal with the suit. It's not great, and I would have loved a gown, but I can deal with it.

I can't deal with Florianne's dress being ruined by stupid pink bows!

Florianne says something along the lines of: "Who would question the two most powerful people in the room dancing together?" And then you get -5 or 10 points for even asking.

That outfit made my eyes cry. If we're going for military, why not ceremonial dress armour? It would have been great if a basic colour scheme and iconagraphy was selected as the official Inqusition uniform and then everyone got their own unique outfit based off of the template.

As much as I'd have liked to wear ceremonial Inquisition-themed armor, it makes sense that we can't. This is a masquerade serving as window dressing for peace talks aimed at ending a bloody civil war. Letting people -- especially outsiders from a new rising power -- tromp about in armor could compromise security as well as the "let's all have fun and be nice tonight (while exploiting the hell out of every mistake and weakness)" image.

I was hoping that it can be dress for the female and my dalish elf cannot dance to save her life.

I have a Dalish elf also. I would have loved something more along the lines of the hunter outfit from the Dalish in origins. It's formal and kind of dress like but it's also used for hunting so one can definitely fight in it. It would have been an awesome perk for Dalish characters. I like to headcannon that Josephine tells my Inq that she has it handled and then surprises her with a special outfit brought in from her clan since she's not only representing the Inquisition but also her clan and people as well.

These are two color variations for the outfit I wish she could have worn for the Orlesian ball, with perhaps an added animal themed mask. Since she has a romance with Cullen, I especially like the fur lined shoulders to match his normal outfit. :-)

At the very least I'd have liked a "mage" version of the uniform.

I hated them. It looked fine and I can understand why we needed the Inquisitor to wear it (Dance With Florianne, two gowns would clip) and it looks fine on Cullen... But everyone else? Josephine and Vivienne downgraded... My god, I'm so sorry Vivienne. At least it isn't plaidweave.

They need to update them and make each one slightly unique. It looks so rushed... I mean, its still my favorite mission, but Maker... Bioware, please allows us to choose out outfits. Its a minor detail, but more important than you thought. Same goes for the Skyhold PJs.

Also, speaking of bad outfits... Gaspard's outfit has a dagger on a belt. He can't bring that, it isn't even legal to bring weapons into a ball as a guest.

Don't understand the hatred of the formal uniform. I thought it was perfectly appropriate for the circumstances and looked very good on my inquisitor and the whole party.

Hate it when people put a gender label on a piece of cloth..

Agreed. That's why I'm glad all the hairstyles (if lacking) are gender-neutral. As for the outfit, I liked it fine, but would have preferred colour customization, and having other options are always better than none. In fact, I made an awesome purple one for Dorian.

Edit:

Really, that is the part you find unrealistic?

I actually bothered to re-equip my Grey Warden armour when we were fighting, so technically my inquisitor did change at the party, and then pretended she was in Skyrim to summon a couple of daggers from the fade. Also, if you read the link of Formal Attire someone linked, it says it can be destroyed. I guess you can go around the ball in your Skyhold outfit. Ha.

The formal outfit would have been cool as something like default skyhold-clothes for the Inquisitor to replace the haven-pajamas showing a progression of rank and importance as well as the growth of the Inquisition.

But for the Orlesian Ball? That was just criminal, especially with the likes of Josie, Leliana and Vivienne around...

It would've been nice to see a feminine version of the uniform.

And I didn't mind having to dance with another woman.  I did mind having to be the "guy" in the dance.  Why do I have to be the one to lead?  I mean, I can understand it can represent "the Inquisitor controlling the situation" type thing, but I'm already having to wear a guy's uniform, do I really have to also play the gentleman's part of the dance too?   :P

The problem with a gown is that you have to fight a lot during parts of the quest. I wouldn't mind something a tad more formal or feminine but a full gown seems a bit unrealistic.

The uniform looks great on the male characters.....still an option or 2 wouldn't hurt.

Isn't the point of accepting the Grand Duke's invitation to secretly warn the Empress because she won't read a note?

I mean if you're going to a ball you're not supposed to be attracting too much attention at why go in military regalia?

True, there is a bit of fighting.

There is also an equip your armour & weapon prompt prior to battle.

Even the most elegantly dressed female changes clothes in an instant to fight the inquisitor.

i don't get the problem.

Here's a game that is chock full of choices and someone overlooked clothes & shoes??
