What do I have to do to get Dorian to talk to me?

At this point I pretty much made sure to do everything I could to get max approval with him, but apparently I'm just not getting anything out of it.

I've only gotten as far as the war table mission to find out Corypheus's real name and now, nothing at all. There are absolutely no dialog options when I talk to him, and he never does anything beyond that library. No personal quests whatsoever.

At this point this has to be either a bug or a horrible design in his approval gating.

UPDATE:

So after finishing a play through without so much as a casual discussion from Dorian I went back and started playing around with different saves. I can tell you for certain that his approval is bugged somehow and never triggering his quests properly. I've put more detail below but essentially it looks like his approval gets locked to a low amount and never moving past that to trigger other events.

Advance in the main quest. Completing main quest missions unlocks companion and adviser conversations.

Try talking to Mother Giselle, apparently she has something to do with his personal quest. If she's standing in the main hall instead of the gardens, than the correct dialogue will definitely trigger.

Nope.

I'm already near the end of the main quest line. And Mother Giselle has not once moved away from the garden.

I got nothing.

Have you kill a bunch of random magister with Dorian inside the party? It's his fetch quest like collecting Warden artifact with Blackwall inside your party. Also, there is a glitch that cause his quest to not appear if you're in a romance.

It's a bug.

I've done everything with him (All important conversations, all war table and the venatori side quest) and even bloody tried to talk to Mother Giselle a billion times and still nothing. I'm near the end of the game and I'm just waiting for the patch now.

Must be a bug.

Dorian was one of the first companions who gave me his personal none-fetch quest. I am almost sure I didn't even completed his first quest at that point. I didn't romance him, if that matters.

It's a bug if you advance in the story too far then you can't get his personal quest I've had it happen to me before. Only thing you can do is the next run try to get it as soon a possible by keeping on talking to him doing the war table missions for him and his other missions and keep an eye out for the Mother she'll be in the throne room when you can get the quest from her.

EDIT: Usually after he talks to you about Felix you should get his personal quest either right after or very shortly after.

yeah its a bug. what is suppose to happen is after talking to mother Giselle she mentions having gotten a letter from Dorian's mother or father about a secret meeting, then you can either tell Dorian about it or just bring him to it and that is the mission. it is one of many bugs for personal quests, others that I have found include the Cassandra's lover mission not being marked as complete, and solas mission never competing where it is the same ending conversation after each time you talk to him (though that may not be a bug just me not doing something).

Yeah I never got a personal quest for Dorian either, I did the Venatori mages stuff and all his war table missions...but he never discussed anything beyond them..and him and I were really good friends too, got along famously...just never ended up having to go do anything for him.

Think hes the only companion that didn't bat me upside the head about a personal side quest too...I thought that meant that the whole Redcliffe thing was his personal side quest...but then my fiancee ended up getting a personal quest for him.

So yeah I guess there is some kind of bug or condition I didn't meet that caused it to never trigger. Perhaps its the Mother Giselle bit...cause I never really talked to her after Haven, she was kind of just one of those useless "I say the same thing every time" NPC's after a certain point...so I wrote her off.

I ended the romance, and Dorian quest can be done again. Are you in a romance by any chance?

Not with Dorian, he and I get along great, but I'm involved with Cassandra on my play through.

I've got this problem as well, but I think it is because I did Halamshiral right in between the Warden quest. Literally right after Crestwood, so doing them one after the other should fix it.

Dorian hasn't even talked about Felix yet. He did talk to me about what happened in the fade, but nothing more. Giselle also doesn't want to leave the garden.

And yes, I am trying to romance him.

I mean if you romance someone else his personal quest will not activate so I think that was your problem

I have this problem too, and it annoyed me so much that I logged into this account for the first time in three years to see what the problem was.

I did all the other companion quests except Dorian's and I'm at the end of the main story after 55 hours. I loaded an earlier save to where you just get to Skyhold and got the quest to trigger. I tried several times and it seems that you need to get the cutscene where Dorian talks about Felix's letter to trigger his personal quest. After that scene Mother Giselle shows up in the main hall with the letter from Dorian's father. If you don't get the scene with Felix's letter, you won't get Dorian's quest and if you advance too far with the main story you will not get the scene with the letter. It sucks because Dorian is my favorite companion and I'm not going to replay everything from when I get to Skyhold (earlier save was at 25 hours vs 55 for my actual save). I'm also not going to replay a game this long any time soon, so I stopped playing till the patch comes out. I've encountered many bugs in this game, most were small, but this is really annoying. It's one of the main characters. You'd think the main stuff would get shipped bug free but I guess that's too much to ask from video games nowadays.

Well I did all I could but Dorian never once talked to me past the trying to name Corypheus. After going back and running tests across various save games I'm completely sure that this is bugged. Not only have other people apparently experienced the same thing, but with other companions as well, so this does seem like a systemic issue.

As near as I can tell Dorian's approval is being locked to a much lower maximum approval. So if, say for the sake of argument, the maximum approval on most characters is 100, Dorian's approval is being treated as if it had a maximum of about 30. You can get up to that point, but you won't ever get any more. And when you're at max approval you will never gain any more, so you won't know necessarily if you were supposed to.

I noticed a similar behavior with Varric. ( and most others as well, Varric was simply the easiest to test with ) When I hit the maximum amount of approval with him I would stop getting more, and wouldn't even get any approval messages for him. However if I first received some disapproval in order to bring his approval rating down, then the same actions afterwards would net more approval, showing the appropriate message accordingly.

I ran the same tests with Dorian. Moving through a specific scene and making all the right choices that would give me approval resulted in nothing, no approval changes at all. However if I did something to gain his disapproval first, then repeated the same scene with the right choices, I would get approval messages from Dorian.

I have no idea what's locking his approval to such a low value. At this point I just wish I had a console command of some kind to force his approval up so I can just get past this BS. After all the work I've done for him I'd say I deserve it.

Thanks a lot for testing this out!

I am having the same issue. 65h in and nothing, never got the Felix's letter cutscene (and therefore neither the quest from Giselle). Tried an older 30h-ish savegame, just after getting skyhold, and it triggers (must have missed it then). Inbetween I do remember that I got approval for Dorian's Venatori quest, so maybe doing that one before doing the personal quest 'locked' the approval and prevented the letter cutscene? I don't really want to replay 30 hours so I am going to wait for it being fixed. I have been really enjoying the game sofar so I hope it will be addressed in the next patch so I can continue.

Aha! So this is why I don't get Dorian's mission... And what I'm suppose to do now? I almost at the end of game...
