My bf is Quebecer and we live in Ottawa. Uh yeah, they don't sound like that.

Its an overblown mock-French accent.

Though TO BE FAIR, all of the regions seems like parodies. I'm sure we'll see overblown cultural behaviors even in Rivain and Tevinter.

I love the lore behind Orlais, I just deeply hate the horrendously-exaggerated and even insulting attempts at remotely trying to sound "typically / stereotypically" French. I don't know if it was done on purpose by both the VAs and BioWare, or if the voice actors and actresses were actually told to "sound like that" by the writers (lest they would have sounded completely different otherwise?). But the end result in the game is just generally very difficult to take seriously and role-play through... ugh... it's horrible.

One of the worst example I can think of: Mother Giselle.

I actually avoided talking to her in my first playthrough, will probably do the same in my second one; she sounds like torture.

I am French myself and couldn't agree more with Chuvvy about Stroud and Leliana (and also a select few other Orlesian officers and merchants who actually don't sound halfway irritating). By comparison the Antivan accents sound like lullabies to my ears (Josy, please, talk to me about anything, and you too Zevran).

Funny you say that because I'm a native Spanish speaker and I can't stand Josie's "accent". She rolls the "r" way too much that it sounds just fake/stereotypical. Pretty much most Antivan accents make me roll my eyes. Who I thought had a good balance was Zevran. He had an accent but it wasn't this ridiculous thing Josephine has.

But I agree with about the Orlesian accent, I don't speak French but I've spoken to people who are French and speak some English and they're accent is not whatever was happening in Orlais. It was a caricature.

Orzammar was indeed awesome. That is, until you realized that you now need to spend several hours running errands for politicians, THEN several hours carving your way through half the darkspawn in the Dragon Age franchise.

That didn't bother me because I knew it was all leading up to me murderising bhelen(my first play through was dwarf noble it is personal).

The worst kingdom? I can't really comment on it, because we've only been to three of them. I don't have any real inspiration to want to see Antivia or Rivain, but it doesn't make them the worst. Morally, Tevinter has the worst track record by far, but I'm fascinated by the lore about them, and would absolutely love a game set in or around the Tevinter, exploring their golden age in more detail, maybe even helping to restore their lost power(or topple it completely, depending on if you want to be a good doer...). The Anderfels have the Gray Wardens going for them, we're told at the end of Inquisition that stuff is hitting the fan there, the land is described as being rough, so I'm mildly interested in that kingdom as well.

I enjoyed Orzammar. I think a lot of people have their experience soured by the Deep Roads part immediately following Orzammar. I would enjoy to see Kal-Shirok, though. Hopefully they explore it more in the next game.

Orlais is the worst because of the terrible fake french accents. Notice how the only two Orlisians that sound good are Stroud and Leliana? Must just be a coincidence that those are the only two with VAs that are actually French.

The overwhelming majority of people don't know the difference between good and bad, unless its really bad.

Do you know how many people were posting snide remarks about Corinne Kempa's work in DA because Leliana's accent was horrible and obviously fake?

I heard about that. I don't know what those people were smoking, because Leliana's accent sounded real to me, whereas the other Orlesian accents sounded like caricatures of French people.

Good luck on that. Kal-Shirok didn't survive a millennium cut off from the rest of the world, deep in the Deep Roads, by taking chances. The couple war table missions we got from them surprised the hell out of me. Kal-Shirok is... what was it Mr. House said about the Boomers? "Aggressively reclusive"? Difference being, Kal-Shirok isn't waiting for a Chosen One™.

Anyway, there's way too much hometown pride here. We only think Ferelden is great because it's where we were introduced to Thedas. That and Kirkwall is all we've had of Thedas for 5 years. And Kirkwall is... less than endearing. Ferelden isn't the bestest everest, it's just our "hometown" so we root for them as we would the local sports team. But while it's fun to root for the local team, it's not actually any better than the opposing team from somewhere else.

I'm surprised we haven't mentioned the biggest reason Orlais sucks. Those goddamn masks!

I don't mind the accents all that much, I actually love listening to Mother Giselle and Josephine.

However, the day they create a country with a Dutch accent is the day I won't stop giggling at DA. And the day my ears won't stop bleeding. Partially because no english speaking person ever in the history of ever can pronounce dutch words correctly.

So hey, accents could've been worse. A LOT worse.

As far as Orlais' culture goes... Men should just drop the masks. Doesn't look good on them. Also, the game... blegh. I do enjoy totally owning it in Wicked eyes Wicked hearts but also shows how shallow "zhe gaime" really is.

Maybe that's how Quebec French speak?

Neither. They have their own accent, which is both hilarious and lovely. When they speak French, we think they're speaking another language entirely. Plus, they have their own set of expressions that we don't use in France.

Orlesians are a caricature. People used to be that terrible at speaking English, it's true. But it was fourty years ago. Things have changed.

I wonder if it could it be Missouri, New England or Lousiania French? I don't know but there are a surprising number of accents which can be used in games, movies or TV which people think are fake but people really do talk like that just not necessary in the place the person thinks they are faking it or only in a small area.

To use a Doctor Strangelove reference, people thought the Bomber captain had a fake Texas accent but he really was from Texas and really did speak like that which is why he was picked for the part after peter sellers hurt himself and couldn't play that role.

Orzammar is the worst off, has to depend on the Grey Wardens other wise it will be overrun by dark spawn ages ago.

Perhaps, but keep in mind Orzammar isn't the only Dwarf city left just, there's that other city that used to be the capital of the dwarven empire and that just that we know of so I wouldn't say they are dependent on the wardens though they do have great respect for them.

Oh man this thread made me laugh so hard. Personally I love orzamarr but would not want to live there...the immanent threat of dark spawn and thier corruption over taking you one day doesn't fly high on places I'd like to live...
orlais is too beat around the bush for me. I'd rather say f you and that be the meaning. Not a beat around of niceties and eventual assassination.
but hey if that's the case I'm one of the cool kids then right?
assassination attempt = cool kids

tevintar isn't my choice to live due to I highly dislike playing the mage. And that kinda power doesn't sit well with my warrior.

Define worst...for me, the worst nation is the nation no one want to lives in.

In such case, the worst would be the Anderfels for me. Dangerously hot summer, dust storm during cooler weather, almost impossible for farming, Authority, except the Wardens, not caring about their citizens and the Darkspawns attacking on daily basic just tell me a big NOPE.

Tevinter is 2nd worst if you're not a Mage.

But... those accents!

Okay, we haven't actually heard an Ander's accent, but I'm guessing it's German. Riordan doesn't count; nobody had accents in that game.

Orlais is the worst because it's based on the worst real country.

It took the absurdity of France and turned it up to 11.

BTW, I'm assuming the question is discounting the totalitarian nightmare known as Par Vollen, right? Because that's clearly the worst. There is no question. Slaves in Tevinter have more freedom and choices than the Qunari Triumvirate does. We're discounting the totalitarian nightmare, right?

Yeah, the anderfels sounds terrifying to me, vast tracts of empty land and steppes ruined by the various blights, the poor, yet incredibly hardy and tough citizens, the almost daily surface darkspawn raids, even the incredible political power and influence the grey wardens wield there. The piety and devotion of the people to the maker is also something. Would be awesome to see in a game, but I can't say nope enough when it comes to choosing to live there. Although, if we ever go to Kal-Sharok, the Anderfels will probably also pop up.

The northeastern states also sound like places worth seeing, Rivain, Antiva, Par Vollen and Seheron.

Orlais is inspired by France and Ferelden England.

They are not supposed to BE France and England, meaning that calling the accents fake is a moot point. Orlais is not France so there is no french accent to imitate. Orlais is a kingdom in a fictional universe. You are also neglecting that this fictional country may also have vastly different accents within.
