Why would you choose Mages over Templars (Min-maxing)?

Umm, did you actually explore the Fade? You get stat boosts there as well.
Dummy me, that was the later Inquisition quest. Yeah not really sure what you got in the past besides a ton of lore, that was fine with me though, +1/2 stat hardly matters anyway.
Besides that? Many Templars are dicks, so for the plot alone. Also people who know about magic seemed to be the better choice for dealing with a giant magic phenomenon, than a bunch of lyrium addicts with an attitute.

Why would you not?? on your first play through not knowing rewards or anything thats the question, not after you did it all an know what rewards your going to get

Stat boosts for either end seem negligible, too small to really consider them beyond the RP reasons for picking one over the other. But even if there was better gear or points for going to the Templars, it's hard for me to consider going that route if I'm sacrificing roleplaying for stats.

it was all in favor to mages, even after the quest you´ll get a leader of faction in your Skyhold, while the templars not if I am not mistaken, you get only some templar tower if you´ll do that requisition which is more likely only just an appearance change. But at all, aside from few little things, you´ll have no real difference betwen the playthrough with templars or with mages. In this is DA:O plot changes and battle of Denerim are superior.

I'm still on my first playthrough and I chose the Templars simply because I thought it would be nicer to have a united force behind me rather than a rag-tag bunch of mages who are constantly in-fighting.

I chose the Templars because the mages were indentured to Tevinter - there is NO reason prior to accepting the mission to believe you will be able to liberate them, or if they even want to BE liberated, from Tevinter control.
In fact - I believed the best soluation against "unstable magic" used by Alexius and the Venatori - was a bunch of anit-magic warriors.
For me - there is absolutely zero reason to choose the already lost mages.
Meta-gaming... chosing Templars, your world isn't populated by giant crystal golems... choosing the mages released an entirely new nightmarish faction on Thedas.
That - and I'm told the mages whine constantly in Skyhold... I'd regret their liberation every second.

I always play as a mage, so the choice was obvious.
Also, I'm not overly fond of the way Bioware portrays the Templar's as jack booted thugs. If the Templar's were a bit less thuggish maybe I would actually have to think about the decision.

Besides for RP/Plot reasons, why? In the Templars Quest, you get a few permanent stats boost and an extra Skill point for Cassandra. I don't recall something like that in the Mage one (unless I missed/skipped it). Kinda sucks.
The OP did say besides RP/Plot reasons. Everyone here is giving an RP reason lol.
If we're putting aside RP/plot reasons, then there's really no reason to chose the mages. The templar quest is immediately available on the war board right after your first visit to Val Royeaux. On the other hand, you have to venture to Redcliff first before you can access the mage quest on the war board.
Personally, I just hate Samson more than Fiona and would rather kill Samson lol.
P.S - Ace Attorney, your title should be "min-maxing" and not "mix-maxing" =P

A lot of people probably picked Mages because they don't cost any power, so it's faster

Most people probably picked what fit their RP better ..

I was just going to say this as I was reading replies. Seems some didn't read the post well enough (no offense meant to anyone).
And thanks for catching up the typo.

But they do cost power, just as much as the templars actually.
The Templar mission is better gameplay wise, although the boss is an annoying ******. Story wise you get an interesting fade section, meet Ser Barris and get to play the whole: I am the chosen of Andraste card. It's quite something.
I do however feel Bioware presented the choice quite badly to the player. You might think that by picking one or another you're deciding what happens to Templars overall or mages overall but that's not the case. That's decided by the Divine pick.

Even if you do pick Templars, there is still an army of Red Templars opposing you.
The choice does not affect gameplay. It only unlocks a different set of side missions and figures into who the game chooses as Divine.

Actually for the templars you get a new agent, which you can ultimately promote to knight-commander.

That army is smaller though and the venatori army becomes bigger, for example during the attack of Haven you get venatori instead of templars.

They don't in my play, but I made them my allies.

More importantly, why support the mages when the templar mission is 10x better?
In my opinion, for the delicate flowers.

Spoiler
You can already have a mage leader in Skyhold.
Lady Vivienne.

No that is moot. You can get Clemence and Alexius if you choose the Mages and enter the Tavern, Ser whatever his name is if you choose Templars. So you get more Agents with the Mages unless there is another I am missing from the Templars mission.

I found the Templar mission very boring. Yay another demon, woo hoo..I just wanted to kill them all just to be sure and then go recruit the mages, but alas that option was not present.

I dont know yet if there is any bonus to choosing the mages mission over the Templars.
My first playthough I went with the Templars because I'd already seen parts of the Mages mission on the streams and I felt it more likely that my noble warrior would turn to the trained in demon fighting Templars rather than the Mages.
