Why would you choose Mages over Templars (Min-maxing)?

I chose the mages for my first playthrough (dalish rogue) and the templars for my second (human pro-chantry, pro-circle mage). While I appreciated the fight at Haven being easier when you fight the Venatori, and liked saving the templars, I'll probably mostly go with the mages in the future solely because the time limit on the templar mission set off my anxiety horribly. I had to leave behind a bunch of loot because I kept having to run back to the main hall to defend the templars.

The Winter Palace mission is bad enough with its anxiety-inducing time limits, I'm not subjecting myself to another timed mission unless I absolutely have to.

No that is moot. You can get Clemence and Alexius if you choose the Mages and enter the Tavern, Ser whatever his name is if you choose Templars. So you get more Agents with the Mages unless there is another I am missing from the Templars mission.

You can get Clemence even with siding with Templars.

Really?  that is pretty cool then, my bad. I sided with Temps went in afterwards and he was gone. Hmm, interesting, not interesting enough for me to replay it, but interesting.

Just go to meet the Mages in Redcliffe and recruit him. Then do the Templars mission.

I chose the Templars because the mages were indentured to Tevinter - there is NO reason prior to accepting the mission to believe you will be able to liberate them, or if they even want to BE liberated, from Tevinter control.

Every mage you talk to says they don't trust the Tevinters at all and don't like them. Even Fiona pretty much makes it clear that she can't stand him and that she's not okay with his plans. To be frank, I find it a little bit too obvious that something weird was going on there, the first time around I was completely convinced the Tevinters were manipulating their minds or something to that effect.

Templars because the quest name sounds cooler. J/k. I went for the Mages in my first playthrough, didn't like it very much, then I went for the Templars and realize how awesome they are especially the scene where they break down the barrier.

Just curious haven't actually sided with the templars yet but one huge reason for me to take the mage path was because they threw in a new mage companion, Dorian. Also Time Magic! Do you get Dorian ether way though?

Templars make the most logical sense imo. You are trying to close the Breach. Not pour more magic into it.

The minute I met Alexius, I hated the mages. How could you meet that guy and go "Yeah, I want to ally with him." He creeped me the **** out.

Then I looked at the the Templar quest. "Champions of the Just". It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling. I felt sorry for the poor bastards.. they needed to live up to that motto. So I helped.

Yes. You just get him later on.

You can already have a mage leader in Skyhold.
Lady Vivienne.

Vivienne is as much a leader as Sera is, which is to say not at all.

There was a really big hole in the sky to the fade and it needed closing.  I figured mages would be far more useful in doing that than templars.  Then again I have favored mages and been anti chantry since the first game and I have yet to see any reason to change that way of thinking.  Bonus for me is I find Fiona to be hot I just wish there was more light were she setup shop.  I was disappointed she didn't move to the mage tower I had built.

She's the leader of the Loyalist fraternity, and the closest thing to a Grand Enchanter, next to Fiona's dumb ass. She's also a KE, and can pretty much solo the game if you wanted.

Umm, did you actually explore the Fade? You get stat boosts there as well.

Dummy me, that was the later Inquisition quest. Yeah not really sure what you got in the past besides a ton of lore, that was fine with me though, +1/2 stat hardly matters anyway.

Besides that? Many Templars are dicks, so for the plot alone. Also people who know about magic seemed to be the better choice for dealing with a giant magic phenomenon, than a bunch of lyrium addicts with an attitute.

Uh, Ser Barris > Fiona.

Not to mention, you go to Redcliffe as a mage and you encounter a mage who knew you in the Circle, she is jealous and hates you, and is actually glad about Tevinter... she is so wrong in the end. Templars didn't have "attitude" at all... mages were awful and whiny. Templars remembered their duty enough to fight their superiors.

Mages and acts of stupidity go hand and hand. I was not surprised by their alliance.

I truly believe all peoples should enjoy freedom. So even after DA2 and the alliance I still freed them... other than my own personal views on freedom, I had little to no reasoning to free them. Although random templars attacking me for no apparent reason while exploring led me to side with the mages as well. I know I am forgetting something, but early on I kept thinking why are templars attacking me? Have they turned into cold blooded phycos. O wait they always were just as bad as the mages.

I honestly hated the entire mage/templar stories In all three games. My favorite aspect about DA:I was that the story did not center around this conflict. Not to mention mages lost the art of healing magic due to their obsession with blood magic. (Joke) Shouldn't revival be taken out of the game since it is magic that restores life?....

The OP did say besides RP/Plot reasons. Everyone here is giving an RP reason lol.

If we're putting aside RP/plot reasons, then there's really no reason to chose the mages. The templar quest is immediately available on the war board right after your first visit to Val Royeaux. On the other hand, you have to venture to Redcliff first before you can access the mage quest on the war board.

Personally, I just hate Samson more than Fiona and would rather kill Samson lol.

P.S - Ace Attorney, your title should be "min-maxing" and not "mix-maxing" =P

Both missions are immediately available after you go to Val Royeaux. You get invited to Redcliffe by Fiona before you leave, which gives you the mission.

I can't think of any reason outside of RP to choose either one. Min/Maxing is accomplished through crafting more than anything else, and having mages or Templars won't make you any better at crafting.

Well don't you want to save poor Fiona and the bunch from Alexius together with the moustache hottie?

I know I did.

I know I did.

Once I knew I'd get the companions no matter what (Cole and Dorian), I found no incentive here.

Honestly, the only thing interesting to me is that Leli can play a part in this quest. Other than that, to hell with them.

Still baffles me that some people find it logical to bring tasty demon-vessels to a demon-infested breach :'D

I mean, sure, I couldn't see any abominations but it just seems highly illogical to take that risk.

Also, mages told me to eff off (ok besides Shady McEvilpants Alexius), while some templars were working their butts off to get their comrades back to normal.

They probably give you that as a reason to choose it over the mage quest. The mage quest seems much more urgent, and I imagine it's what the majority of people picked.

I actually did feel like the game was trying to shove me to do the mages side, so being contrary I picked the Templars.  :P

I don't get this argument. Demons can already enter the world physically through rifts, why would they want to go through the trouble of possessing someone?

Chose mages because the Templar leader was a dick, although I did want to see how red cliff fear since DAO.
