Im at the screen now to recreate my ME1 character. It looks like if I go to custom then it changes them to default then I customize. Is this true? I wanted to keep my original base then make little changes, ect. And obviously I dont remember the sliders from ME1.
lol. I'm gonna be paused here forever.

nope if you go to custom, the sliders will be at what your ME1 character looks like, not the default shepard
i did it with mine, just made small tweaks to face

I have the same issue and it reproduces the default image, not the one of my imported game. What do I do if I just want to change the imported face instead of rebuilding it? And no, I dont recall the original sliders or the facemaker string.
