I set my mage's tactics to "Preferred" for dispel magic. He seems to waste the spell on his own magical effects (frozen targets, etc.). And it seems to actually work! As in, he dispels his own magic. Has anyone else experienced this?

My rogue is also wasting AOE attacks on single targets. There's other issues as well. Origins seems to have much better AI than Inquisition, despite being two generations older.

Dispel is very good versus rifts, because you can kill the demons while they are still spawning after 1st wave. Simply dispel the green circles that are being charged by the rift. Though i disable that spell in tactics cus it messes up my whole party.

The dispel magic one is probably working as intended. That ability is a combo detonator, and using it on frozen/paralyzed enemies triggers an ability combo (the affected enemies take some spirit damage from the combo). The AI in this game will try to detonate ability combos at every possible opportunity. Yes, it has the unfortunate side effect of removing the CC from the enemies, but the AI can't know when you want to trigger combos and when you want the enemies to stay CC'd, so it always goes with the more aggressive option.

As for AOE abilities being wasted on single targets, that seems pretty par for the course for game AI these days. In DAO and DA2 you could improve the targeting with tactics, but that's obviously not an option here. Just another unfortunate drawback to not having access to tactics, I guess.

Dispel is better to use yourself, so its available for barriers. They are really annoying

You don't dispel effects you wouldn't want to dispel - burning, shock, freeze etc on enemies don't get dispelled, just as your party barriers and buffs don't get dispelled.

But incapacitated enemies will take spirit damage from eldritch detonator combo.
