I wonder how the reapers preserve someone's memories when that individual has been vaporized by the reaper laser

You're suggesting that because the geth have no DNA then the reapers must not be relying on the genetic material to preserve the species. While this is sound, it only applies to synthetics. The lore all points to them preserving organics using that organic paste.

My position is that the Reapers are not only relying on genetic paste to preserve the species. As you say, certainly, the Reapers do rely on the genetic paste, my position is that it is just not only the genetic paste. The genetic paste is not enough. There is some other additional aspect of a species in the destructive analysis being preserved as well.

Whereas genetic memory is an interesting theory, it just makes more sense to me that the genetic material forms some sort of necessary hardware for the Reaper to run on. The software would be some distillation of a way of thinking, perspective, etc, etc, perhaps whole personalities from the analysis that are uploaded to the Reaper, that only run properly when run on the h/w fashioned from the genetic material of the species. This would be closer to an "essence" of a species preserved.

When astronomers first thought the universe revolved around the earth there were certain mathematicians then that couldn’t understand the “wandering effect” of Mars and Jupiter at certain times of the year.  

 

This is known as RETROGRADE which defined is the APPEARANCE of a moving body that appears to momentarily go backwards when the faster observer goes by.  For example, if you are a passenger in a car doing 60 and you are paralleling a train doing 40 – as you line up your vision with the front of the train with the far background – as you overtake the train – the train APPEARS to go backward momentarily.    

 

According to the “story”, one mathematician said “this is utter nonsense.  If the laws of [Newtonian] physics no longer apply, then this is all a DREAM”.   So he killed himself.   When Galileo proved the earth & planets revolved around the sun (much to the dismay of the [universe-centered] “church”)  – the motion of the planets made PERFECT SENSE because the MODEL of the solar system was now correct.

 

Any “street smarts” here?   Professors & astronomers today still are scratching their heads wondering why things don’t make any sense.    Maybe their MODEL of (whatever) is screwed up too?

There are things/creatures/entities out in the universe probably more terrible than we can imagine.. The Reapers being the tool for one of them.  Leviathan.  Food Gatherers / Farmers.  That is their role.
