From my experience, no! In fact if you're not controlling Bull I'd highly suggest you don't even spec into the Berserk tree. Just get his Focus ability and place his points somewhere else. In the time I had him as a Berserker, he would leave Ring Of Pain on and drain all of his Stamina, and he doesn't really use the Bite attack either. That class is very player dependent because you have to manage your HP well enough to do extra damage but not get killed in the process. Unless you're going to control his every move you'll notice that he wont be very effective as a Berserker.

It certainly wasn't worth it for me, but if it works out for you, go for it.

Any more input here?

I think it's a given that a human player with the slightest shred of common sense will always use skills better than the AI. So in general, I agree with RavenousIron.
That said, I've been filling out (The!) Iron Bull's Reaver tree and it's not like he drops like a fly. I've given him a few abilities that generate Guard and all my mages have Barrier, so that generally helps. Also, if you tell him to prioritise Devour, and make sure that it AND Ring of Pain are both upgraded, that should keep him from being too suicidal.
I play on Hard, btw...

Sure, I'm currently using Iron Bull as my only tank in a nightmare and hes using 2H. I've specced fully into Reaver and it works great. I ignored Dragon-Rage initially cause it hurts him but once you get good armor and he can build guard effectively via items/taunting hes free to use that HP for Dragon-Rage late game.
As to your question on Ring of Pain - yes its worth it. Ring of Pain + Devour as his 2 main abilities works great, both for general dmg (not spiky high end dmg) and just generally keeping him alive. Ring of Pain isn't that bad on stamina if your mostly auto-attacking. He'll stay at high stamina and throw out devours consistently. I got block and slash + combat roll as well which he'll use with out running out of stamina and I don't really have any stamina passives for him atm.
Either way from a tank perspective, Ring of Pain + Devour is very useful. From a DPS using Dragon-Rage... AI isn't very smart about activating RoP only to use devour then turning it off again. He'll turn on RoP and leave it till he leaves the area or drains all his stamina so... ehh. But as long as you don't favour Dragon-Rage down the road he wont spam that either. It's fine, he does enough auto-attacks to compensate.
