I'm at the point where you have to join the mages or templars.  I am leaning more towards mages, since they seem  to be persecuted unfairly by Templars, and I am a mage myself so I am clearly biased.

However, there is one thing i don't understand.  Have all the Mages allied with the Tevinter Imperium, or just a couple?  I'm not sure I wanna be helping them if they are allied with the Imperials.

Thank you!

Their leaders allied them all with Tevinter, yeah, for "protection".

Choosing a quest doesn't necessarily mean you side with that group. That said, no, the mage quest does not lead to allying with Tevinter at all.

Fiona, the leader of the rebel mages sold them to Tevinter, the mages who didnt leave are all in service of Tevinter now. Some mages dont like it, others like it, but all the rebel mages are servants of Tevinter.

Go with the templars, their quest is better.

The mages are in servitude to Tevinter. You basically go there to end it. No one is allied with Tevinter once the mission is over and done.

So that being said, should I go with the mages or with the templars?  In your guys's opinion

I went with the mages but kind of wish I'd gone with the templars.

You do get a cool quest with Dorian if you go with the mages. It really is excellent.

I think they're both great quests, though I like the mage one better (in no small part because of Dorian). I think you should choose the one that makes sense for your character.

go with the templars, you will purge the corruption of the order and will meet Ser Barris, the most badass templar ever.

Try not to think of it as supporting either faction, because that isn't what the game is asking you to do really. Its asking which faction you think will give you the best chance of helping you to close the breach.

I sided with the Templars, because as Cullen points out, this is pretty much the definition of what the Order was formed to do - they can hardly refuse to help when the problem is their speciality of fighting against demons and evil magic. They are an organized and disciplined fighting force, and they have the trust of the people which helps to cement Inquisition credibility (whereas the mages are largely viewed as dangerous terrorists who might even be responsible for the breach).

Personally, 9/10 I would go with the Templars.

I openly ack that 50% of that is due to Ser Barris, cause he is teh awesome.

The other 50% is cause I do feel the mission is better.

(And before I am pillared, I am a Dr Who fan for about 20+ years, that storyline is right up my alley. Still felt the Templar mission was better written and enacted)

But from a pure RP pov, I would say simply go with what your character would do.

I have four planned, currently running 2, and all would make different decisions for different reasons.

...Heh.

Just hit me that doesn't help at all, lol.

All of the mages still following Fiona end up indentured to Alexius and serve the Venatori unless you complete the Redcliffe mission.. but Fiona's group isn't even all the rebel mages anymore, let alone all the circle Mages.

Spoiler

TBH, all you're really deciding is wether you want Calpernia and the Venatori or Samson and the Red Templars as your primary War Table opposition. You'll fight both either way.

I have to say the mage mission had more impact to the story to me and also Samson being a main villain was pretty awesome.
He looks so screwed up.
Just my opinion though

If you want to screw the Tevinter Imperium, then siding with the Mages is the way to go.
