Skyhold: Which main mission goes first? Does it even matter?

Right, so I arrived at Skyhold at Lv.9 and after lots of exploration, am now Lv.12. Now I thought maybe I'll check in with the main plot again soon-ish. There are apparently two:

Here Lies The Abyss and

Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.

Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts has a level recommendation of 12-15, while Here Lies The Abyss apparently has none? None that I can see, anyway.

So, do they have a similar level recommendation? Does it matter which I do first? I kinda assume the stories are independant from each other, at least that's what I get out of the intro text, so it shouldn't matter in that regard.

Please no spoilers, only advice along the lines of "Yes, it makes sense to do X first because level/easier fights" or "no, doesn't matter".

Thanks! (:

I guess technically Here Lies the abyss should start first, but I don't think it really matters either way.  Actually some scenes (depending on your WS) only happens if you do it second

Fights are difficult in both recommend grinding other areas first. The boss fight for WHWM can be avoided if you make the right choice so you could run that at a lower level if you wanted. You also get a wider range of approval if you don't do the fight.

I did HLtA at level 16 and WEaWH at level 21.

Now I'm curious, haha. Might have to do it second now!

The areas are beautiful and I've had fun, but I'm not that much of an infinite-exploration-without-plot person. To really enjoy my exploration I absolutely do need to see the actual plot regularly again. So waiting another level? Sure, fine, whatever. Waiting until Level 16-21? Not happening. Especially for something that's apparently meant for Lv. 12-15 anyway.

It wasn't a suggestion, just an observation.

The order doesn't matter. I did HLTA first in my first playthrough, and I recently did WEWH first in my current playthrough. I sort of prefer doing WEWH first, but that's merely a personal preference. I think it makes more story sense to do HLTA first.

Either way, you get some different NPC comments depending on the order done, but nothing radically changes.

I'm doing hlta first because I think it's more logical to tackle the pawns before moving towards corphys plans. And wewh seems more corphy-centered.

But so far I'm up to the part where you have to raid adamant in htla. And I'm level 17. Have done everything inside every zone, except emerald greaves and emprise du lion.

Contemplating completing the other two zones before doing anymore story as I love the exploration and side quests, im also very keen to do all the "inner circle" stuff before moving to main quest.. any problems with doing this people can see happening?

I've played through the game three times now (not a completionist here either heh, I just do what makes story sense to me) and I've always done HLTA first. It somehow made more story sense to me, and the game seems to push you in that direction (HLTA costs 20 power, WEWH 30, but you have to unlock Crestwood for HLTA so I guess it's the same cost either way?). Now I really need to try and do it the other way round! I think WEWH can be a bit easier in terms of combat as well, so it would make sense to do that first.

Can't you do that when you do WEWH first?

I don't see any problem with that per se - I do all the Inner Circle quests (the real quests, not the fetch quests) before completing the HLTA+WEWH story arc, but I don't think that you get locked out of anything if you don't. The game seems pretty flexible to me that way, but I haven't tried doing them late so I wouldn't know. Before you get locked out of anything substantial, the game will warn you pretty clearly that you are about to proceed past the point of no return (literally "Warning!").

I wouldn't do the last two zones before completeing HLTA+WEWH - not for any story reason, but if you do, you won't have any exploration left, and I like to balance exploration/main story, but you can of course just power through the story afterwards.

Actually, I'd say it's a bad idea, and you've probably already lost some of the benefit of it. For instance, you imply that you've done everything in the 'Exhalted Planes' zone. That zone, for me, relied very heavily on the outcome of WEWH.

The Order matters if you want to see some interaction between 2 characters from Origins, David Gaider said it himself. It all depends on your world state. If you do Wicked Hearts (the quest in Halamshiral, the Ball) at the end a character from Origins will go to Skyhold and stay there until the end of the game. If you do Here Lies the Abyss after (including the pre-quests in Crestwood and Western Approach), when you end the Western Approach part where you go to the ritual tower, one grey warden will also join you in Skyhold and stay there until you start Here Lies the Abyss in the War Table. For that period of time you can trigger a cutscene in Skyhold between those 2 characters which is an awesome treat for Origins fans.

How difficult is the quest in the Adamant Fortress at level 12?
I know that 12 is the minimum level recommendation, but is it extremely difficult?
I'm eager to advance the plot, but I don't want to end up with an immediate death...

Personally, I try and allow the story of that Inquisitor dictate the path of choice; not just the mechanics, as it boosts the RP immersion for myself. If I have a flaw in my play style, it is that I have a tendency to be a completionist, and this is not needed to enjoy the game and story. Play the areas and choose the side-quests that best for your Inq, and avoid choosing everything every time.

The order doesn't matter, *except* for the reasons DanAxe states. This is why I'll be doing Wicked Hearts on my second playthrough. The scene is notoriously difficult to trigger, but I'm going to try.

I tend to wrap up everything left in the Hinterlands , Storm Coast , Fallow Mire and a bit of the Oasis.

Then Crestwood , western approach ,Here Lies the Abyss.

Exalted Plains , Wicked Heart.

Emerald Graves , Emprise du Lion , and the last desert zone.

I power to Skyhold so, usually hit WMWH about level 8 and HLA about 10. No problem except on nightmare, HLA is a bit tough, but can be done with the right team and a lot of micro management in the demon fights.

So it's half of the Hinterlands, Recruit Bull, off to Skyhold, then get horses, polish off Hinterlands rifts, WMWH, finish Hinterlands, HLA. Then a long wait before Arbor Wilds, not going there at level 12, though I always have it unlocked by then.

it kind of depends on your gear, the first time I did it I was lvl 13 I think, but still only had 8 potions, hadn't really messed around with crafting, and was getting destroyed left and right.  Literally ended the big boss fight with everyone but varric dead, him with one sliver of health..

I'm currently right in the middle of Adamant on this playthrough, lvl 14 12 potions, decent crafts, and it's going ALOT better.

I think the 12 potions make quite a bit of difference too. I just finished HLTA and though the last fight was time consuming, it wasn't as bad as some of my other fights where my whole team needs to be revived frequently. Just Varric, once.

I was halfway through level 12 when I embarked on Adamant.

I'm not really a good judge, every boss battle my first run through ended the same way, nobody having more then 10% of their health remaining.  That's not an exaggeration either, that's literally how every boss fight ended.

It doesn't really matter, though I usually do HLTA first, even though I played WEaWH first in my 3rd playthrough.

I just like the feeling of having something more "light-hearted" and a bit more uplifting (if you wanna call it that) after the Fade part. The Fade had me quite emotional the first time (don't really know why it got to me so much).

You have to follow the main quests (check them in your journal). You will get to Skyhold after "In Your Heart Shall Burn", but before that you must do a bit more. I assume you have met Mother Giselle in the Hinterlands. Then you need to travel to Val Royeaux, but I don't wanna spoil too much.
