He gets ripped to shreds because he's in the midst of everything while not having any decent defensive abilities.
Is there any way to make two-handed warrior viable?

Outside of Dragon fights, he does really well for me. I have him as a Battlemaster/Two-Handed warrior. He buffs us, debuffs the enemies and goes to town. I found that the AI sucks at controlling him as a Reaver, mainly because it's a HP management class and if you're not playing as him it's best to not even spec for that tree.

Give him some OP armor then, full vanguard/battlemaster all the way.

Turn the Blade and Turn the Bolt.
2H warriors without those two SnS passives tend to RIP pretty quickly on Nightmare.

In my first game, I didn't give him any Battlemaster skills and he was pretty useless. This time around, I'm giving him lots of stuff that builds guard, and his viability has improved greatly.

2H Warrior is the worst spec in the game. The 2H tree needs some abilities that reduce threat and/or build guard. If turn the blade/bolt were not deep in the 1H tree, no problem, but you should not have to buy abilities that require a shield and that you literally can not use as a 2H War, to make the build viable.

Just skip Dragon Rage, set Devour to "preferred" and get all those glorious Reaver passives for him.

I first struggled with Iron Bull too but then I went to the behaviour section of the character and told him to defend either me (mage character) or someone who isn't in the current party constellation (or maybe a ranged character will do the trick as well). Additional I told him to use preferably Flawless Defense and Devour. Now what happens is that Iron Bull picks single opponents with the chain and pulls them one by one. With mighty blow and such he is pretty good at one on one and its fun to watch him not getting clusterfucked. He doesn't run in piles of enemies anymore. WIth Flawless Defense and an enchanted Armor he even gains some block in case something goes wrong. Devour helps him to survive in longer battles. What you also need to do is not to give him any abilites from the vanguard section because they would make him pull more enemies and that is not worth the block he would get for it (you now "challange" and "raging bull" and what not). Better invest in Reaver, Two-Handed or Battlemaster skills that give him higher strength and make him deadly on one on one.
