I'm not sure how it stands against previous titles really (didn't play DA2 anyway).

I do remember that some of the BG and DA:O music was really iconic... I'd often find myself humming it.

I'm not sure if it'll be the same with theDA:I music. I've been playing for >100 hours now, and I've not been humming stuff yet.

That said, I do think the score is good overall, atmospheric and supports the mood and gameplay very well, along with fantastic sound-design more generally.

I also think that the bard material is not only a stroke of genius, but is exceptionally well delivered for what is pretty much a cosmetic addition to the game. The vocals are lovely, and there are a couple of songs in her repertoire that are beautiful.

Oh, and the cello section during the opening/menu music is one of my favourite parts, I love it.

I posted this in an earlier music thread of my own creation, but to have great and memorable music, you need a theme.

The best example of this comes from the late great Jerry Goldsmith, the composer for the original star trek movies, listen to his original score vs the change for the enterprise.  The main difference?  He added a THEME !!!!!!!

My biggest problem was that not a single theme in da:i that I have heard so far sounded better than the main theme for dragon age origins

I always wondered what the soldiers in the back row heard. These speeches are great for screenplays, but on the battlefield make little sense.

I love the music during scripted scenes and events (like the battle at Haven) I wish there was music for when you're just wandering around though. The empty silence with no music, very rare banter, and only the sounds of your footsteps make the world feel lonely and empty. :(

*edit* playing that clip from Origins gave me the feels to the extreme.

I thought it was great. The big, booming title themes were goosebump worthy, the combat themes were a major step up, and the ambient music was very pretty, although I wish there was more of it.

Loved the title screen. I loved the acoustic version that plays in some of the companion moments as well. At least I think that is what was playing lol.

Did not like much else. It was all just meh. I did not realize it was even there half the time.

Those BARD songs though are GREAT!

Compared to many other soundtracks, DAI soundtrack is a bit top notch. I miss Aubrey Ashburn though.

A big Yay.

I think DA:I's soundtrack is by far the best of the bunch. Also DA:I alone has more memorable tracks than DA:O and DA2 combined. I'm hoping they keep Trevor Morris around for all future DA titles.

All of that said, for the most part, I'm disappointed in the music that plays in the regular areas, like The Hinterlands, Storm Coast, etc. Just too damn quiet for me. That's about the only thing Skyrim excelled at more than DAI: great ambient style music, like of course this classic:

I think that is intentional. DA:I has a lot of ambient sounds when you're running around in the wildnerness areas, like birds chirping or rain hitting the leaves of trees. There are long stretches when no music plays at all, likely because they didn't want it to drown out the ambient sounds.

I think it’s a good soundtrack, but not a great one.

You barely hear a good soundtrack, but a great one succeeds in picking you up and enormously (rather than just moderately) enhances the mood. Quite a lot of times a soundtrack tries to be too epic or too romantic and completely drowns out the game, movie or whatever you’re watching. The difference between memorable music that totally fits the mood and an overblown one can be subtle, so it’s something best left to really good and experienced composers.

Having said that, DA:I lacked any theme comparable to the one that Zur made for DA:O, which keeps the game’s soundtrack sort of faceless. A year from now I’ll be hard-pressed to remember any of it, unlike, say, the soundtracks of Skyrim, The Witcher I, Dreamfall, Of Orcs and Men or Age of Conan.

It’s in good company though; The Witcher II had a similarly good soundtrack that wasn’t all that memorable (especially compared to that of the first Witcher game).

In hushed whispers is one of the best soundtrack themes i have ever listened to. Easily the best in the series.

It's average. Not the best or nor the worst. It's not very memorable.

The soundtrack is good but could be a lot better. Only a few songs really stood out while some are serviceable and others are plainly boring or are just loud noises and big drums. Nevertheless, I have to say that the ambient stuff worked really well mostly.

The songs I liked:

Main Theme

Calling the Inquisition

Journey to Skyhold

Sacrifice

Elder One theme

The inquisition marches

Orlais Theme

Siege of Adamant

IMO, DAI's soundtrack is fantastic. I still catch myself humming peices from it to myself, which is more than I can say for any of the previous games.

I love it. My husband and I both listen to it a lot!

My only desire would be a version with the vocals, like the bard songs (they're all amazing, whomever voiced her was fantastic!) and a full version of the choral "The dawn will come."

I don't remember much of the music from DAO or DA2 at all, but a ton of DAI's music has stuck with me. Particularly the Elder One's Theme, Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts (the music in that mission being one of the main reasons why I didn't chuck my controller out the window running around those maps in circles), and the Adamant musics. Champions of the Just was also great, as well.

I'm hoping for a release of the complete OST, though. That Dragon-Fighting music is waaaaayyyyyy too good to not get its own time in the spotlight.

I kind of disagree with this.  A great soundtrack and great theme ought to be listenable on its own, otherwise the music provides nothing but atmospherics, and that alone NEVER makes a great soundtrack.

Take the scene in lotr where treebeard calls the ents, listen to the accompanying music that comes in.

That theme is NOT just atmospherics and background filler, as those ents emerged from the forests and the chorus came online, it was spine tingling, everything was enhanced by that music, and even by itself it stands out.  We needed more of THAT.

I may have misstated something, as I agree that a good soundtrack can stand on its own. My point was trying to indicate that a lesser track stands out and removes the listener from from the game, film, etc. For myself, this is exemplified in the older film, 'Ladyhawk'. While I am a fan of APP, the music did not fit the movie, IMO.

Huge YAY from me. Not only is it done really well in the game, but the actual soundtrack is wonderful to listen to and is the primary reason I bought the deluxe edition in the first place. Also, I adore all of the tavern songs; Samson's Tale, I Am the One (better than the original from DAO, IMO), and the French version of Empress of Fire (heard during the Halamshiral ball) are particularly nice.

I don't know, all I've been able to hear in my head is the title theme.

Same here. I think the title theme is very memorable, and the entire three minute piece is just great.

my personal preference is for incidental music to set a mood for the current scene without me being aware of it. The music for the move to Skyhold did this partially due to the action and events immediately preceding. The music for the mage - templar fighting early early in the game did not. There I think the balance was wrong, the music drowned out everything and became a distraction, and I do not want to have to change the balance just for one particular area in the game.

However, I will forgive everything for the tavern songs, Sera's and Leliana's in particular.

I don't remember any theme besides the main one- and like six variations of it, and the romance scene music, so I'm feeling ambivalent about it. There were times when ME3's soundtrack brought me to tears (end to Citadel, anyone?), so when comparing the two, I give it a hearty shoulder shrug.

I DID think the bard was really neat though.

It seems that all of the songs from the game aren't even in the soundtrack.

I think they have better talent this time, but maybe it's just BioWare that prefers an approach which, in my opinion, significantly under-utilizes the talent they have. Most of the time his work just fades away in boring ambience, even though he's capable of much more. The soundtrack is amazing when it needs to be, for sure (meeting the antagonist for the first time, for example), but IMO, great soundtracks are amazing when they don't need to be. Exploring the woods, caves, etc. Combat music even against regular enemies, not just the big story battles. Wandering Skyhold, etc. It doesn't have to be super bombastic or anything, but it should be memorable.

Each of the major areas should have a distinct not just visual aesthetic, but aural as well. Instead, I'm pretty sure I heard very understated and ambient variations of just a couple themes repeated throughout most of them. Emerald Graves is a notable exception, but the fancy Orlesian music only lasts a few seconds amidst the sea of boringness.

That's my take, anyway.

Oh, and I didn't care for the bard songs. Maryden needed to shut up while I was making conversations. Need kick from tavern option pls, I'm the damn Inquisitor.
