There is no purpose, nor was it intended to be that way. A sound pings when an important object is near that you should search for. You guys are mad at Bioware for giving you a tool that you overuse to the point of annoyance. I literally never used search unless i heard the sound (which literally plays 100% of the time if there is an object of interest.)

It's not difficult to see nodes or plants with your own eyes...

Skyrim didnt have a feature like this at all yet no one complained. Hell, it's a **** ton harder to see whether a plant is pickable or not in skyrim.

I remapped search to Z so I can hit it with my ring finger while moving. Makes it surprisingly easier to spam.

No. Like most, I'm annoyed they implemented a search function that is inferior to the one in previous games. Also, the removal of the auto walk/pick up. Having the ping go off on ladders, doors, fast travel stones etc is annoying. It even goes off on objects you can't interact with like crossroad signs. The highlight colour does blend in on some maps, and doesn't last long enough in general.

Skyrim doesn't have invisible objects that can be only seen with a search function.

"i can cope with it, if you can't then you're wrong" ???

skyrim didn't have a "feature" like this because it was easy enough to distinguish between interactable and non-interactable items... containers like barrels and chhests would be slightly ajar... plants would be missing the flowers... veins would be missing the colour to show that there is ore in it...

so no, it's not harder to see if a plant is pickable or not in skyrim because you come to learn how each herb looks, and then you learn its' "dormant" appearance quickly after

I have it mapped to Tab. Ping - ping - ping....SMH

Seriously though, I just wish the search radius wasn't so large. I get myself into a full-on rage trying to find the source at times...

It`s just an annoyance. I`d vastly prefer on and off toggle for item highlights, and search button that is only used when trying to find a secret item or clue (in restricted area, not spamming whole map through like a submarine with a manual sonar).

Left ALT key for me. I can use my thumb for searching or the space bar for hopping

It just outlines everything in orange, whats wrong with that? The only time to activate it is for pinging.

Mapped it to "q". Mostly because muscle memory as I'm familiar with constantly using that key as I play Bf4 and one of the roads to success in that game is spotting the enemy, which is mapped to "q" by default.

The only reason I have to complain about that function is how laughably inferiour it is compared to the previous games' versions.

"Skyrim didn't have a feature like this at all yet no one complained".

Probably because PBAOE sonar isn't a feature that gamers are chomping at the bit to use.

I use it, and it pings, which is basically all the time because there's always something to loot. The problem I have with it is that the ping so rarely helps me locate where the loot it, which I figured was the point of the whole thing.

It outlines with a yellow hue, and a white text and that basically always blends in with the background so much it just doesn't help me, but rather frustrates me and I ping ping ping madly trying to locate where the damn thing is.

If it outlined in red, or green, or something that atleast let me easily locate where it is. Maybe even show me the pings on the minimap, it'd be easier to use it.

Countless times I saw myself looking around trying to find where the item was after pinging because the highlight was not enough to highlight it, and to make it worse, I'm colorblind, so it is really annoying because you never know if it's a simple elfroot or a letter or some quest giver item that we are supposed to find randomly.

If only the mini map had a small dot to show where the item was after pinging, it would be perfect...

I've always asked myself - what if all humans had echolocation? Now I know the answer. Thanks DAI! :)

This is what I did.  I just wish the pinging was louder, or separate from combat sounds, so that I can hear it, without the combat being stupidly loud.

It is a shoddy system that at minimum needs fine tuning like the lackluster and boring and annoying planet scanning of ME2.

I had to turn down combat sounds to 50%. Why do these games think that we want constant ZAPPEWSLASHFIREWHOOSH overpowering all other sounds all the time?

I wish I could just hold it down (I mapped it to Tab) and have the glow be a more conspicuous colour.

I also think it should require a line of sight, and not just be based on radius.

Spamming V is there to spam it. So I'll spam it.

I refuse not to spam it.

Spammable V is fantastic or horrible design?

It's horrible. Persuading people into not doing it won't change that fact. We need the loot and we want to see the loot.

@EpistaxiS

Please, pretty please, upload that macro, I beg you!

Horrible design indeed half of issues with it are those light tones on highlighted items which just blends perfectly into almost any background so yeah. Why cant we just see freaking letters...

And that ping sound, was playing way too much AvP so every time i hear something ping, i ended up expecting that some nasty xenomorph gona pop out of bush and right into my face

Horrible design. Once again an example of Bioware fixing something that didn't need to be fixed. It's just awful. And OP, there are many situations where you need to use it to find loot/items/books. It's awful.
