I didn't know he could die.  Was it in the great hall ? Or before that ?

At which point can you actually start handing out titles like "Knight/Commander"?

If you let the main hall fall below about 30%, he'll make a comment that he was injured, but he can keep fighting. Then you'll later be told that he died because of his injuries (I think after the envy demon fight). So basically he fights on despite life threatening injuries, a badass to the end.

Isn't this how the Cullenites movement began, with his small appearance in DAO? I feel like I'm witnessing history in the making here.

He's a templar. His death, or probable conversion into a red lyrium fiend and subsequent death, is unmourned in my playthrough.

He does more to help mages in a single war table mission than Fiona has done during her entire life, so you should mourn the passing of a Templar who remembers that protecting mages is part of his duty.

Tell me, then, why he didn't leave the Order and later join the Inquisition.

I thought he was killed fighting the Red Templars and never got hooked at least that's what I read on the playthrough where I sided with the mages. (Not doing that again any time soon)

He appears at the Temple of Mythal quest too.
And you can promote him if you conscript the templars.

I conscripted the templars but never got any choice about promoting him, or even talking to him again at all. Is he even a npc in skyhold? I could not find him. Could some detail the requirements to be able to promote Barris?

Do you raise the flags at the beginning? Because if you don´t, then the orlesian noble survives, and you judge a red templar officer. Maybe that takes the place instead of promoting Barris?

I assume you mean in the case of taking the mage path (since he joins the Inquisition as the most awesome agent if he survives the templar path). And I don't think we know what happens in that case. However based on what we do see, I'm betting that he at some point realizes what is happening, rallies the remaining sane templar, and takes down the envy demon in an attempt to save his bretheran. However, without the Inquisition's support, he falls in battle and the other sane Templar are either killed or forcibly converted.

I love Ser Barris. He is such an honorable man. He handled himself well while the other Templars were caught off guard and held the main hall like a Champ.  I kept running back in like a mother hen though. Which is why he lived. The war table missions to his promotion, he made my choice in allying with the Templars a good one. I wish I could have spoken to him in skyhold. It would had been nice hearing more about the rebellion from his perceptive. But then again, unlike the mages, he's actually out there doing his job to bring peace and order.

@Ranadiel, That sounds about right. The envy demon and the red Templars tried to do a slow conversion of the rest of the Templars into taking the Red Lyrium. They had only a small supply of untainted lyrium left so once that was gone all they would have is the red lyrium to take. The problem is that Barris and some other high ranking Templars were asking too many questions and they knew they probably would never get them to convert so the plan was to simply kill them. This is what the Inquisitor stops from happening.

I actually notice something... When Haven's attacked & you allied with/conscript Templars, Fiona is one of the bosses that you have to kill.

But, if you ally/conscript Mages, Knight-Captain Denam is the boss that you'll have to kill. In my PT I didn't see Ser Barris, it was Denam all right.

So... Does this mean whatever happens, whoever you ally with, Barris survives?

I sense a disturbance in the Force. Maker willing, he'll be on the next game...

How dare he value his word and uphold his oaths until such time as he is betrayed by his superiors.  What a terrible character flaw, to be honest and forthright.

I like Ser Barris because he is an example of a sane Templar which we haven't had in awhile.

Seeing how the founding of Inquisition is initially seen as heretical acts by many (including the Templars & Chantry), it's simply normal that Barris wants to stick with the templar. Especially that he's a forthright guy, not a power-seeking mage from Orlais.

Yupp, he really showcased the best sides and values of a Templar and I can only admire him for that

Ser Barris is tough, courageous and quite the looker too.  He's probably my favourite element of the whole templar side of the story in DA:I.  When a good person survives a situation they wouldn't have if you didn't act, it's pleasing.

Ser Barris is the man. He became the Knight Commander in my playthrough and he actually has the right head on his shoulders.

When the war started, is what I meant. When the Order went off the rails and attacked the mages.

And had a good person been there, I might have minded.

Nope he can die if you side with the Templar and probably dies if you side with the mages.
