Given how the Inquisition aligned Templars act, plus the actions of Barris himself, I think it's safe to say that once you cut out those willing to go the Red Lyrium route, what you're left with is an Order willing and eager to reform itself into the organization many of us hoped it could be.  One where the Templars and Mages are partners with the joint goal of giving mages a place they can perfect their arts in peace while at the same time protecting everyone, mage and normal alike, from the dangers inherent in magic.

Preach.

They didn't. Lambert attacked and started killing mages before there was a vote on seceding from the chantry. Then when a First Enchanter tried to surrender without a fight, and was killed, the other mages defended themselves...and it was after the attack that they officially voted on seceding from the Chantry entirely.

the war started after that vote, sure Lambert didn't give them much choice, but they still started the official war

What's not to like about a badass warrior who's got a pretty damn good head on his shoulders?

You know, I wonder if Barris will also follow Cullens example and break his lyruim leash too?

....huh.

I have the book somewhere, but I am more then willing to acknowledge (and just to lazy to search and read it again) I might be wrong and would happily rescind that portion of my argument.

Doesn't change the fact the vote itself was moronic (thankfully Vivi managed to protect all the Loyalist mages so Fiona's stupidity and occasional vocation as a slaver did not effect all of them), more so when the Divine on the Sunburst Throne actually seemed willing to work with them (god, I really hate Fiona. I don't want to hate the mother of one of my fave characters in fiction dammit).

...

Damn BSN, I got Dragons to kill, stop luring me in.

I really like Barris, and I like what he represents.  He's a man of integrity who starts off in a bad situation, and once freed of it does everything in his power to make amends for the wrongs of others and make the world better for both sides of a messy ideological conflict.  If you go with the Templars, the Mages are definitely down for the count.  He could have worked to round them all up and kick them when they're weak, and instead he goes on missions to save them from others.  He risks his own life, and the lives of his men, to save people who would have tried to kill him not long before.  He leads by example, and he leads from the front.

He also does admit the templars lost their way and does not make any excuses for what happen at Redoubt.

Ser Barris

All he needs now is a special green lyrium ring.

It is unfortunate that he can die.  I've wanted a Templar party member for a while, and he would have been fantastic in that role for a future installment.

I wonder that too. At the end of my playthrough it said that many Templars followed Cullen's lead and broke their lyrium habit. I hope Ser Barris was one of them.

And the cycle begins again, lol. Gotta love those hot templar boys! I'd totally love to have Ser Barris as a companion/LI in DA4!

This is one of the biggest reasons why I like Barris. He knows that the templars have strayed, they have made mistakes. He acknowldges that they have done wrong.

Then he does the awesome thing and goes lets fix it. He defends mages who are going to be strung up by lynch mobs, he fights demons, he helps protect both mundanes and mages.

I don't care for Ser Barris. His introduction in Val Royeaux marked him as a military stooge to me. The templars assault a chantry sister (one he'd been supporting in some way it seemed IIRC), handwave it with, "She is beneath us" and he joins them. He questions the Lord Seeker's stance on the Inquisition but is talked down with, "You have been called to a higher purpose. Do not question." Mindless devotion is not admirable to me. I think that if he were a good person, a reasonable person, he wouldn't have left with the rest of the templars.

And he admits his failures, and the orders failures. And does his best to make up for them. He does some truly admirable things if you recruit the templars.

Can people please actually play the Templar side of the story before they come in and talk **** about Barris

Same here. It's nonsensical to paint either side as purely right or purely wrong, and the same goes for the Chantry -- all sides contain both unspeakable atrocities and selfless heroes. But when I compare the behavior of the templars you can side with versus the mages you can side with, and of Barris and Fiona as the respective leaders ... it's no contest. None at all. Yes, there are still intolerent fanatics among the surviving templars, and many of the mages are just hapless chumps caught in Fiona's mess, but with the irredeemably corrupted templar officers gone, it's truly a fresh start into a hopefully better future. Not so with the mages, apparently.

My second game is going to be a Dalish "arcane warrior" (Knight Enchanter) who probably should side with the mages for variety's sake, but it'll be hard.

Of course not what kind of madness is that. Don't you know all Templars are cackling mad men with no moral standing whats so ever. :P

Idk, maybe you should try actually doing more than just his 20 second intro before judging him?
