Knight Enchanter, three questions

2. Is is clearly a very action based specialization but how well does it work in tactical view?
3. What spells trees are useful for it? I asume Spirit (both end Passives look great, dunno if both are worth the full point investment).

In my experience yes, it can be set so the AI will use it well
I'm still in my first playthrough (101h.) and Vivienne has come with me all along, she's specced full KE, Spirit (the right branch, avoiding peacefull aura, as she's tank/off tank) and fire with Chaotic Focus for more powah xD She's a beast.
But bear in mind that if you want her to use Spirit Blade, you should set it as preferred in tactics!
Put Fade cloak or fade step as preferred as well and she'll avoid fireballs and fire(whatever) breaths from dragons and other AoEs

1. Can the AI be set up to use it well?
The AI is pretty terribad with it IMHO. In my playthrough they kept alternating between attacking up close and switching to attacking with their staff. Vivienne is a great support mage if you turn the Spirit Blade off since the class gives good Barrier Buffs.
2. Is is clearly a very action based specialization but how well does it work in tactical view?
You can play support, but the class is more geared towards being offensive. You get some really awesome buffs to your barriers but all three spells you learn as a Knight Enchanter (Spirit Blade, Fade Cloak, Disruption Field, Resurgence) are all more based on you being close to your enemies and allies.
3. What spells trees are useful for it? I asume Spirit (both end Passives look great, dunno if both are worth the full point investment).
I took all the passives from the Spirit Tree. Fade burst is also very useful. If you are really serious about playing more passively, then getting the crowd control spells from the Lightning Tree is definitely a must.

A lot of people like going Winter magic with a KE, as did I. Mana Surge is super powerful and will constantly freeze enemies attacking you. Ice Armor doesn't work while you have a barrier, but it's still nice to have as a back-up since it's really powerful - Ice Armor works as long as you're standing inside Blizzard's AoE, or even if you're standing next to an Ice Mine.

Question: Would Clean Burn + Spirit Blade spam mean you could cut cooldowns fast?

I think so. Spirit Blade does cost mana, though. With Rejuvenating Barrier and KE's mana regen bonus, you regenerate mana slightly faster than you expend it spamming Spirit Blade, so I guess you can use that to cut down time when you really need a spell, but it's not gonna make you able to constantly cast huge spells. I hear Rift Mage can do that with Clean Burn thanks to Restorative Veil, though.

As far as builds go, I would get:
Everything in the Knight Enchanter tree except the last skill
Fire mine, chaotic focus, clean burn in Inferno
Conductive current in storm
Fade step and mana surge in winter
The barrier you get from Fade Shield in an offensive build is more than enough to prevent you from taking damage, even on nightmare, as long as you're hitting things. With Fade Cloak, a good high damage staff, and robes that generate guard on hit, you shouldn't really be taking health damage at all. Putting points in spirit is highly unnecessary, imo.

The AI won't abuse it, but it will use it well enough to put in the points. Vivienne will keep her shields up a bit with spirit blade, intermittently as she uses it, but she will be noticeably more hardy than other AI mages. Put her points in spirit and KE, and whatever else you want, and she's a good "healer."
For playing KE, I put a few in spirit, for barrier and the almost too useful dispel, but the rest went in frost. It just makes sense. You don't need damaging spells, as you'll be doing almost all of your damage with spirit blade. You are a melee mage, so you get Fade Step as a gap closer -- improved so you can charge through enemies to chill them, Winter's Grasp with the AOE chill, and the talent that gives you 50% damage reduction when you are near chilled enemies.
Honestly, without fade step spam, KE is pretty boring. Also, guard on hit is totally overkill. Your barrier should always be up. Put fun stuff in your masterwork slots, like chance to cast walking bomb or something like that.

KE isn't boring, its the Frost tree thats boring. Except for Fade Step. Don't put it on the KE spec for not taking other damaging and more engaging spells besides just Spirit Blade. One of the best things about KE is that it works well with all the trees.

The best thing about KE is living the dream of being Princess Stabbity. Stab, kill kill!
