can someone explain why my character gets this white cap that ciovers his hair whenever i put on a cool hat?  is this a 360 problem?

it RUINS the hats.

It's not 360-specific, I've seen same fugly thing on my PC.

It looks like hair and hat models are in fact interchangeable and can not coexist. It makes sense (because - clipping), but that's a poor solution. Hence Solas is the only candidate to wear that hat, lol.. 8P

Pretty much this. DA:I has a lot of problems with the Engine and clipping, even with deleting the hair under hats.

and the annoying part is, i see npc's wearing these same hats with hair showing.

id rather my hair clip than have to cope with a canvas bowl that still clips the hat.

It's ridiculous and ugly. Bioware needs to step it's game up when it comes to helmets, why can't we even see our helmets when in cutscenes? freakin stupid. fix it bioware.

Define 'NPC'. If that's a random guy in a crowd - an artist could make it so, that there's no clipping. NPC does not have a choice of hairstyles (unlike player)

From what I've seen - Even Solas has slightly weird texture behind his ear wearing that 'Inquisitor' hat, and, well, he's the most 'compatible' of them all.   :)

Bonny Sims in Skyhold has hair underneath her Orlesian Mage cap.  It's not like npc's in this game have hairstyles we can't have as characters.  Well, apart from a particular "arcane adviser" we meet later in the game.

It's silly 'cause it's an easy fix. Depending on the hairstyle, simply delete the hair covered by the hat and leave the bits that aren't. It's not like they have many hairstyles to account for anyway. :> I was looking forward to the Inquisitor hat until I saw that there wasn't going to be hair under it and instead there's that nasty white cap.

I'm pretty sure she has a custom unique head, and artist had taken care of clipping.

It's impossible to predict all the hat+hair combinations for the PC, it'd mean dozen of models for each possible hat to make it look right. That, or the weirdest kinds of clipping (like a tail or a bun sticking out through the hat).

I'm not saying those 'bold' hats are a good solution, but apparently it's one of the lesser evils here. They should've not shown this design before making sure that it can actually work in game.

I'm not sure if it's just missing textures or not - but I think it's more of a leather-type cap to keep the hats on. Since most lean (rather precariously) high atop of your character's head. I hardly notice it since most my armor is Fancy White/Black or White/Red.

A far better solution would of been a short hair style rather then the fugly canvas (hide helmet is my friend). Just wish I could get rid of of the ugly oversized flap hanging of the rear of my robes and armour. Hair styles imo are very very limited and poorly done in general.

This is how I deal with it.

I roleplay that I went to Dorian for tips on how to groom my hair. He gave me a nug-wax-hair-gel, which also colors your hair white. When I equip my head-item and this occurs, then its due to a bad hair day from the nug-wax having a reaction with the textiles or metals of said hat/helmet.

Result: Hardened white malformed hair. And a grudge against Dorian. (Damn it Dorian nug-wax does NOT work. I need grinded fennec bone hair conditioner or Lurker scale ashes + August Ram innards from L'orelais).

I just imagine it is a sheath that adds protection and helps the hat stay on during fights. ....but yeah it is ugly.

Love the hat plus the gaudy Mage armor with long coat and staff...I look like a graduate from some 70's pimp college more than the inquisitor.

....... Look when it comes to game development there is no "easy fix".  A model can not just "cut" or "delete" another model unless it a full re-placer and in that case the hair would be gone in it's entirety.  As far as creating a hat/hair style model for each hair style in game........Seriously? Do you know how long it would take to make every hat model work with every hair style/color while also adjusting it for every head/facial slider permutation? The file size increase for just the sheer number of models that would be generated not to mention textures or scripts telling the game to use specific textures based on your character creation choices? Nothing is simple or easy in game development, especially if you work for Bioware/EA/Ubisoft/Nintendo/Sony/Sega/Namco bandai/Warner Bros/Rockstar or any of the other major companies where the fan base is aggressive, hateful, opinionated, and full of spite for the games they play and the developers that make them.

Btw before my meaning or intent is taken out context with my reply  either by the person I quoted or any other person who happens to pop in here and wants to create an issue. I neither meant any form of disrespect nor attempted to be antagonistic to said quoted person or anyone who might feel slighted by the games perceived short comings. My post is meant to be an informative one merely pointing out facts and my own perceived notions of game development based upon my time earning my bachelors degree for game design and the time I have spent modding my own copies of games such as Skyrim and DA:O. SO....no offense meant and I hope none taken.

i guess i dont understand how the canvas mess is an improvement over just clipping of hairs ... assuming clipping is impossible to avoid ;)

Lol didn't claim it was an improvement but they decided it was better then clipping or people complaining about how their long hair is now short their buzz cut hair has now grown ETC. No matter what there would have been complaints this was the less time intensive choice to make though. "Whats that canvas crap when I wear a hat!?" "....um...it's the hat...." "oh.......I don't like it".  Other ways would have been 300 page screaming matches about the different purely visual glitches that are caused by clipping hair or some other such nonsense about immersion breaking magic growing or self cutting hair etc.

Interestingly, as I found the other night, Blackwall is unaffected by this phenomenon, at least with regards to the Orlesian Mage Hat.

I play on PC.

I can't imagine MORE people complaining about the buzz cut than the dumb skull cap, personally. It still looks a ton better. I wouldn't even complain about the clipping, honestly, but that's just me. It's not like we have any really long hair to choose from. Half the damn styles are some sort of buzz cut.

Lol it also changes blackwalls hair color slightly I think that may be a graphical glitch

It's on all platforms. Hats look like they've been textured by a three year old. Really, whomever did it should be ashamed.

I don't think that BW has such thing as 'hair model' per se. He has a custom hand-made headmorph. Probably, that's how they intended that for all the companions. Although I think that even Solas has signs of that 'something'. So, may be simply someone had made that 'Blackwall wearing cool hat' model, and it remained in the release, even while no other models had ever been created.

It definitely LOOKS like a hair line to me. And it's black, either way. Just flat black versus glossy black (because he's missing the majestic locks).

Yeah, I agree with this. Solas definitely has the skullcap thing going on, I tried it with every companion.

As someone pointed out, the Orlesian vendor at skyhold has the same hat as well as her hair - and I don't think she was lovingly hand crafted or anything. Like most non-companion NPCs, she was popped out using the same parameters as the character creator. There are all sorts of issues with clipping and whatnot on them everywhere if you're looking for them.

But yea... fix our hats!
