I've recently noticed when hitting a sleeping target with a spirit blade that on occasion explode for an immense amount of damage to the extent of one-shotting level 20 enemies on hard.  I've just assumed its some kind of critical combo bust since its only happening on the nightmare combo and I've yet to notice it before now I'd like to know if anyone has more info on this.

1. My staff damage is being applied to the spirit blade spell with the combo even though I'm using a corruption rune against red Templars (not the human ones) and darkspawn.

2. Seems to trigger on only critical hits.

3. I have only noticed it on the nightmare combo, not on weaken or shatter.

4. I'm not using masterwork materials on my current equipment set so i know its not a triggered ability.

5. its creating a unique particle effect I've never seen before.

Cross class combos are the most powerful (in your case an Eldritch combo tied to a sleep enemy, causing nightmare on an area).

If you critical the combo naturally crits too and hence the results you have. Nightmare is already quite powerful on its own, when it crits it is devastating. However Spirit Blade is not the best way to do this, Barrage is.

Well, that would explain why Barrage is the end of the skill tree in multiplayer.
I have rarely seen anyone use sleep though. :/

The most sure fire to get sleep is shocked + weakness. Then follow up with a detonator. Barrage is the best because it seems each of the projectiles rolls for a crit independently.

From Patch 2 notes:

  • Fix to Spirit Blade so it no longer triggers combos
