I am not sure getting...well, lets say mocked, for the entire game sound like a fun experience.
My elf is anti dalish anyway, so its funny for her, but I doubt I could play an actual Dalish elf who believes and not feel like the game hates my protag,
I mean I am loving it personally, but I tend to get attached to my protags...so no angst for me eh?
I don't see it as the game hating my Inquisitor at all. Think about it, you're the first Dalish to be privy to such things. It's world-shattering, but also freeing. If you play as a Dalish, the story is about self-discovery and discovering the truth behind the preconceptions that you had based your identity on. When everything you thought you knew is challenged, then you have to decide what you truly believe in. That is excellent character drama.
I wish it had been more like that for a human, in fact. I feel like they were trying to go there with Corypheus and you getting your memories back about what happened in the Fade, but I didn't really feel that there was that same sort of discovery about andraste or maker that there was for a Dalish elf about their history.
I'm playing as a Dalish Elf Archer, and I have to admit, I'm not doing a great job at it. It's kind of confusing. This is my first time playing an Elf, and I don't think I really understand. It probably doesn't help that I don't bring Solas along anywhere, and haven't picked up any of the history or magic Inquisition perks...
Then again, I've only finished Here Lies the Abyss. I still have Wicked Hearts and Wicked Minds to finish, not to mention I haven't explored The Emerald Graves. Is that a factor, too? I'm going to guess everything everyone is mentioning happens after WH&WM?
Where is this scroll found?
Everyone has their own preferred protagonist, all of the races have access to dialogue unique to them, certain situations such as the mage vs templar are more human centric while other situations such as the Temple of Mythal are more elf centric, and there is no one race/class that is more legitimate than any other race/class.

I have to back up people who say Dalish Mage is probably the way to go. Bonus points for romancing Solas.
Out of the non-elf backgrounds, however, human mage is probably best, because in that regard you're like a direct competitor against Corypheus, who is also a human mage. Plus you can romance Cassandra, which works well with the way the Inquisition was set up, and the mythology-building aspect of the Herald and his lover.

That's kind of the point. They want to leave the Maker ambiguous.

I think the difference between handling Dalish and Maker related info is that one is based more on history...Keepers are more like historians...While the other revolves around Faith.
They'll correct History, but not try to correct Faith.

Bah. I don't see them as fundamentally different. Faith is just nonfalsfiable history.

I realize that, but it makes the story feel less...revolutionary than it does for a Dalish.
I hate the human origin. You're a human noble free marcher, not exactly the most humble of origins and seems to have a lot of similarities to Hawke's origin. Plus, you're heavily tied to the chantry so it's safe to assume you have been indoctrinated to their beliefs and would be out of left field if you choose to be a radical. Even the Circle you come from seems to be neutral about it. I don't like orgins that have their preconceptions established for you which imo, treyvalyans are leaning towards pro status quo.
The Ostwick Circle actually remained neutral...but as a fellow human mage, I would agree that I found it interesting.

The only claims to historical fact in the Chantry is about Andraste herself. The rest is faith based. Even in her day, it demanded faith in her message. The elves on the other hand don't talk in terms of faith or religion. It's all history to them.
And now they need to update their textbooks.

It doesn't share any similarities with Hawke, unless you are both mages, in which case that is it....

I agree that the Trevelyan background feels a little same-y compared to the Couslands and Amells, but I'm playing through the game as a human mage right now, and it seems to allow plenty of room to RP. Even knowing that your family has close ties to the Chantry, your conversations with Josephine alone give you the opportunity to take a firm "No **** YOU, dad!" stance if you want.

They are also humans who happen to be free marcher nobility and embroiled in the mage-templar war. At least Hawke was poor and worked his way up, Treylvayan lived the life of a noble. And fate decided this rich shmuck should be some prophet of Andraste and giving him power and influence to validate even more that human nobility are the Maker's chosen one. Just seems so author wish fullfillment.

Hawke is not a free marcher, nor is he nobility, and the Trevelyans are not really embroiled in the Mage-Templar war anymore than any other noble house is.
And you just, in your own post, showed how Hawke and Trevelyan's origin stories are nothign alike. Hawke came from poverty and a life on the run, Trevelyan comes from a family of means and lived a comfortable life. The ONLY thing in common is that they MAY both be mages.
Well Hawke is of noble blood. They also have that in common.
I realize that, but it makes the story feel less...revolutionary than it does for a Dalish.
Revolutionize what? I was still able to prove Dalish were wrong about a ton of history, it just doesn't change my life none. Win-win to me.

I avoided the Couslands (eventually didn't, but it's not my canon). So I'm having fun with the idea now.
it just doesn't change my life none. Win-win to me.
Exactly. To anybody but a Dalish elf, it doesn't matter. To a Dalish it changes everything. I felt so much more connection as an elf. To me, that's a better story.
You can't win 'em all.

He is a free marcher once he becomes the scion of the amell house, it's what keeps the templars off their or their sister's back. There are differences I'll admit but every Dragon Age game has human noble as part of the ideal human origin. It is a common trait. It is a like in that sense. Savior of the world just happens to come from an ancient noble house of rulers.

But I did. You don't have to lose them all either. I felt pretty connected to my Trevelyan. Pointing and laughing at other culture's misfortunes when all they do is preach to the rest. Felt really connected, honestly. That's just me though. Whatever works for you.

As soon as Leliana fills my human Warden in on everything the Inquisition learned, he's going to make a special trip to the Brecilian to finally tell Sarel that campfire story he promised him.

I always saw Hawke's story as an immigrant story.. immigrant makes good (then falls). Like Scarface. But with magic. ![]()
It has little similarity to this. You're focusing on superficials. Not story content.
