So, as you can probably guess from the thread title, I'm about 40 hours into the game and so far I've had a somewhat mixed experience with this game.
First, the good - I'm finding the main quests associated with "Inquisitor's Path" and the interactions in Haven and Skyhold consistently engaging, and Bioware has definitely succeeded in creating the sense of a big world with lots of moving parts, competing interests, and characters with interesting backgrounds. The "alternate future" sequence with the Inquisitor and Dorian was particularly effective, and I half-expected at first that perhaps they'd stay trapped in this new timeline, with the game now centering on undoing all the damage that Corypheus and Alexius had caused. (OTOH, I guess the point of it was to establish that the world really would be doomed in that scenario because it would be impossible to undo it.) While the plot itself is mostly just another iteration of The Ancient Evil Returned, I'd say it's a good example of how to do it right, and it's certainly keeping me interested in the sense of wanting to see what happens next and being eager to get back to it every day, probably moreso than most games.
However...the "regional" quests - so far I've spent a considerable amount of time in the Hinterlands, the Storm Coast, the Fallow Mire, and the Western Approach - haven't, as of yet, held my attention in the same way. The Fade Rift battles are fun, but often I feel like I'm wandering through some admittedly fantastically designed environments while doing nothing terribly interesting. A good example is the quest with the Avvar cult and the hostages in the Fallow Mire. I had hoped that perhaps there would be some dialogue or a choice to make when I finally get to their headquarters, where I could try to convince them that this isn't necessary (especially since I'm playing my Inquisitor as decidedly uncomfortable with being called "Herald of Andraste") or would have to negotiate to get the hostages out alive. But nope, they're just a bunch of well-armed crazies who are hell-bent on killing me and that's that. Same with Blackwall and his ongoing Warden history quest - I've taken him with me for a number of these, and when we actually find whatever he's looking for, he never says much more than "that should be helpful" or something to that effect. And when I went to the Western Approach, there wasn't much dialogue about what exactly the Venatori were doing out there and why, just a bunch of combat sequences.
Am I just picking the wrong sidequests? That is, are there some that do have more to them than running around, establishing camps, retrieving objects, and fighting?
