So I had a playthrough where I left Haven, if you know what I mean.

I was playing a female dwarf archer with the Brit voice.  Everything was pretty okay until there was a particularly epic moment that was... diluted by my character creation.  I didn't buy it, and "buying it" is the reason I play RPGs.

Since then, I went back into the creator to look for my ideal of inspiring heroic, I guess.  I didn't mind the female Brit voice, but I'm curious; there are two scenes in the game so far where she was speechifying.  The scene in Val Royeaux where she is loudly speechifying at the Chantry mother felt forced, as did some scenes leading up to/in Skyhold.

Do either of the male voices do well in those loud, inspiring scenes?  How about the NA female?

The Brit voice is the only one that hasn't made me grimace in normal conversation because of unexpected tone, but I can deal with foibles if the important stuff is done well.

Personally, I enjoyed every moment of the british male voice. He could be soft in moments of negotiations and calm, but his voice carried weight when he was giving speeches. Hell he sounded pretty convincing when he was angry too, which is a rare thing for voice actors.

How about the NA female?

In my opinion, I would stick with the british female voice if you're going to play a female. My female qunari inquisitor uses the american voice and I actually dread when my inquisitor talks because she sounds like an emotionless drone. I'll give her that she does sometimes sound like an actual living person, but those occasions, sadly, are very rare.

My first play through was a qunari female with the "american" voice. At first I didn't like it (after playing Hawke for so long) but it REALLY grew on me. I ended up loving it, well before with the big Haven event.

My second play through as an elven female has been with the "british" voice and 25hrs in, I just don't like it at all. The VO isn't bad or anything, it just doesn't feel right I guess. (Terrible explanation, I know.) So I'll only be using the "american" voice from now on.

My guess is everyone is going to be different and like different voices. :P What I would love to see is an Orlesian/French and Dalish/Welsh voice option. I know the chances of that are zilch, but it feels odd talking to other Dalish elves in game and having a completely different accent.

Eh, it's all personal taste. I super love the work Alix Wilton Regan (British female) did in the game. It kind of makes me want to make a Samantha Traynor clone. Actually I really want to do that now.

The male British VO is great.  I haven't tried a female character yet so I don't how it stacks up though.

I successfully created an elf that fits the NA female voice.  Played for a couple hours last night, that voice is definitely not as bad as I'd heard.  I'll do a male brit tonight and see what's what.  Thanks for the replies.

Personally I didn't like the British male voice. Too plummy, not enough gravitas. Also, whenever you ask a simple question in dialogue he sounds completely surprised and flummoxed.

I have rolled another male human (a rogue) with the American voice, and I'm going to see if I like that better.

From what I've seen, both female voices are good in different ways.

Loved the male british voice; he had a great range which gave the Inquisitor a lot of personality. As far as head-cannon goes, he's definitely my favourite. The male american voice is definitely better suited for dwarves and Qunari however, and I couldn't imagine the british voice impersonating them well.

Where the female voices are concerned, brit all the way. I really dislike the american voice - there's just no emotion, the actress barely even sounds like she wants to read those lines... it's really detracting from just about any and every scene and the Inquisitor comes across as a total black-hole of charisma. I wouldn't even like a companion with that voice, how Bioware thought this would be appropriate for a PC is beyond me.

The NA female voice actress, Sumalee, is very deceptive. The couple of clips they play when you make your character and even the opening Haven tutorial spot does not do her justice. I stuck with it for my Qunari mage and I'm REALLY enjoying her work - she's stoic and it fits. This is someone who DOES have emotional range when needed but is going to be more centered for the most part.

I love Alix's voice - but it's just very jarring coming out of a Qunari/Dwarf IMO and while I worried about Sumalee initially, I'm very pleased.

I haven't made a male yet and I expect my Archer will use the Brit voice, though I watched a hilarious Cassandra romance vid where the PC was this very norse looking male with the NA male voice and it was pretty goddamn awesome.

I really wish there was a welsh accent option for the dalish. It's quite jarring to hear this really deep American accent come out of my elf . maybe if they had pitch controls ...

The brit female is the best for the ladies, in my opinion. I've played with both, and the American just sounds a little stony at times. It works for my human mage, though, so I guess it's up to what kind of character you're trying to play.

My Female Dwarf sounds more manly with the the American Voice. It feels like it fits more for a Dwarf.
# Dwarf/Qunari go American, Human and Elf go British

I haven't tried a male yet.

I wish there were more clips of the female Inquisitor with Sumalee's voice so we could see a bit more.  The majority of clips on Youtube use the 'British' voice, so its hard to get a good idea of what the 'American' voice sounds like.

Love American male. Still enjoy American female and British male. But British female is... augh... painful. Sometimes she sounds like she's trying to spit out the lines. "I WISH i could GET RID of it..!!!!!!!"

Normally I don't condone the use of multiple exclamation marks, but it seems like see needs them :I

Which one is the british and which one is the american?

In my game I have a very low/deep voice and a high pitched one.

I can't tell accents since I'm not a native English speaker.

I tend to think of them in terms of timber.  The American voices are both much deeper, so I use them for Qunari/Dwarves and the British ones for Humans and elves.  A bulky human male would work fine with the American voice, I think.
